³¼ MILKSHAKE IS RIGHT¼ ¹ Well, this is more or less a follow-up on Milkshake's article in the last issue of TS, so let's roll... First of all, and maybe most important, I will back him up on his words ³"Stop producing the same old and utterly boring dragons and warriors pictures. I'm fed up with them - I hate them." ¹This is EXACTLY my opinion, so what is left to say except a request for new and different motives? We really have seen enough of phantasy pictures for some time now - It's time for change! So why not get inspiration from the "real art". If Boris really is such a genius as many scenefreaks seem to believe, then what would you call people like Edward Hopper, Salvador Dali, J.M.W. Turner, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso etc.??? They (most of them atleast)actually changed the style of modern painting, they experimented - tried new ideas, and then they found their own style - their own fame. Ok, so some hated them, but they were also loved (and still are!) by a great deal of people. But the most important thing to them was to create art! Not fame! I'm sad to say, that I believe some of the graphicians in the scene today care more about fame, than actually creating art, so they pick a motif, which is a sure winner. And what is needed to win a gfx-compo? - A Boris copy! That never fails. Sad story, eh? This may sound like an appeal for real art copying, but it's not. There's a great difference in ³COPYING¹ and getting ³INSPIRATION¹. As Milkshake wrote - you can't get a 2m * 1.5m picture painted on canvas to look the same on a 14 inch monitor, but you can still make the basic motif with a few changes look great. But if you try to start copying such a painting, then I bet you'll end up with a very different picture changed by a lot of own ideas. So it'll end by being you own picture instead of being a copy anyway. And before you all start complaining, let me just give you one small example. Most of you know the ³ Revelations ¹slideshow by ³Rank of Cryptoburners¹, right? The picture called 'Princesse de Boheme' is actually a very good copy of a Salvador Dali picture called 'Galarina', but Rank has made some changes in colors and most important he has given the model a different head (thank God!). He has also left out a bracelet, but all in all I think it still looks a bit too much of a copy - That's a matter of taste. Besides, this particular picture doesn't really invite to a lot of "add ons", but others certainly do! Well, what I am trying to say here probably isn't very clear, so I'll tell you. The scene (in my opinion) needs more than the AD&D poster style. Why not introduce more styles? There is plenty of possibilities - just pick one! That's it, and that's that. You probably can't teach an old dog new tricks, so let's atleast see some of the newcoming graphicians follow this trend shall we??? But it would be nice if the old dog could cut loose and show us some creativity. Of course I don't want every graphician to turn to the real art now. It would of course be best if graphicians could invent their own style(s), but that can be a bit difficult, so go for the already know styles from other medias as a last resort. There has got to be others out there besides Milkshake and myself (and maybe Rank?), who take an interest in the real art (not necessarily just the art of painting!), or maybe it's better to say an alternative type of art besides graphics on the Amiga? ³Dali / Majic 12.¹ ¹Note to Milkshake: ²Edward Hopper IS a really great painter! Especially his 'Nighthawks' is great!
