Preface ~~~~~~~ Although I've been promising various people for a long long time to write or at least have a go at writing a Guitar Tuner, I would like to thank Steve Brown from PD Drome for giving me the motivation and final push I needed to sit down and actually do it. I would also like to thank Kevin's cousin (who's name I can't remember) for lending me Stereo Master, and Kevin for the use of his mini amp. About Tuning ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are many, many ways to tune a Guitar. There's the Piano which not too many people have sitting in their front room today and there's the Organ, even that little Casio that you put in the attic years ago. Or, there's the Pitch Pipes and Tuning Forks all of which can be difficult for the beginner to use without guidance, but best of all is the Electronic Guitar Tuner and it's dead easy to use. But again this has it's own drawbacks, £20 to £25 is a lot of money to spend, especially if you have just bought your first Guitar and don't know if you will still be trying to play in a weeks time. So, this is where my Guitar Tuner enters stage left. Because it uses real guitar samples it gives the user a specific sound to aim for instead of a non descript note it's easier to use. I'm not saying that this program is the best and only way to tune your guitar, because I would advise anyone to invest in an electronic tuner after about 4 or 5 months of playing, but this program must run a close second best. Using the Tuner ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've kept the tuner as simple as possible (very simple). Upon loading you are presented with 6 small buttons, and each button represents a note.   6 5 4 3 2 1 ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ | | | | | | | | | | | | | E | | A | | D | | G | | B | | E | |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| |___| Click the desired note with the Left Mouse button and the note will sound about every 2 seconds. To silence the tuner use the Right Mouse button. Select the E/6th string (the thick one) tune your string OPEN until the sound from your guitar and the tuner are the same. When you have done this to all six strings, you guitar should be in tune. After tuning with this program or even an electronic tuner it's always a good idea to check that your guitar is in tune by using the following method. Checking ~~~~~~~~ We will assume that your 6th string (Low E) is pretty much in tune. Place a finger on the 5th fret on the 6th string. Pluck the 6th string followed by the open 5th string and both strings should sound the same. If not fine tune the 5th string till both strings sound the same. When the 5th string is in tune with the 6th, fret it at the 5th fret and pluck the 5th and the open 4th. When that string is in tune, fret the 4th string at the 5th fret and pluck the 4th and open 3rd. Now fret the 3rd sting at the 4th fret and pluck the 3rd string and open 2nd. And finally, fret the 2nd string at the 5th fret and pluck the 2nd and open 1st. Now strum a few times and it should sound good. If, however some notes seem to jump out at you, then one or two strings may be in the right Key, but the wrong octave. This is easily done (I do it all the time) so loosen of all the strings and start again. Tuning a guitar comes like all things with practice, and a happy guitar is a tuned guitar.
