Here follows a completly rewritten text of HOW to use 38400 BPS on an Standard 7.14MHz Amiga Without Errors for high speed modems. I had to send out a new version as lot of people havent suceeded to install 38400 100% on their Amigas so now i include settings for different programs etc. Just copy those files you use into your disk/HD and everything will be KICK-ASS. First i explain how to set everything (Even if i have included stuff for the most used terminal software!) First of all you must load Preferences and go to the serial options and set the Baudrate (technically wrong it shuld be BPS rate but but) to 19200 (yup!) and the serial buffer to ATLEAST 16000 (kick 2.0 users can have up to 64Kb USE that for EXTRA SAFE serial.handling!) and one very IMPORTANT thing set to RTS/CTS handshake! (Xon/Xoff CAN be used but isnt safe enough!) now save this. (If you are using 2.0 the serial.device supplied on the WB disk IS fast enough for 38400 so you dont have to change!) Now you MUST copy the serial.device used in this Archive to your devs: dir there ARE serial.devices with a newer Version number but those doesnt seem to handle 38400!) Now for the Terminalprogram: The program MUST run on a Task Priority of ATLEAST 11 or so! I use 31. and it MUST use RTS/CTS (Xon/XOff!) and set the BPS rate to 38400. Use as few colors as possible! (8 Colors CAN be used but you will loose chars sometimes!) And use fastFonts in the background! You can also use CPUBLT if you want to. (FF and CPUBLT is NOT in this Archive!) Set your HST after those settings! (Change efter your needs AFTER a TEST!) USRobotics Courier 14400 HST Settings... I have tested the following programs with 38400 without problems: And have included config files for those programs (exept AmiExpress and AZComm!) AmiExpress 1.0j and higher NComm 1.92 (:NComm.Config) JRComm 1.0 and higher (S:JRComm.DEF) VLT 5.045 (:VTPrefs.dat) AZComm (Write "ChangeTaskPri 30" before running!) I actually GOT Errors in VLT! Maybe something wrong set! will check it out.... VLT did give the BEST result in screen handling but not soo good CPS rates I have HEARD that TEMPEST runs fine with 38400 If you run a Paragon BBS i must say that Paragon CAN'T handle 38400 BPS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some things about High Speed modems: Some persons don't know the difference between the different standards of highspeed modems so i will write some about them here: HST High Speed Technology a high speed protocol (C) by US Robotics that use 14400/450 450/14400 (on some older HSTS 9600/450 9600/300) It sends fastest on the channel who need it most. HST is NOT compaible to V32 V32 a CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 9600/9600 NOT COMPATIBLE with HST V32Bis A CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 14400/14400 NOT COMPATIBLE with the HST Standard DualStandard A modem sold by US Robotics (and noone else! the same as the HST) This modem got BOTH Highspeed standards so it DOES connect in HIGH speed to both V32s and HSTs V42 A errorcorrection! IF a HST is V42 compatible it's NOT V32 compatible EVEN if V42 is higher (as V32 is something COMPLETLY different!) V42Bis A packing method that is MUCH better then the MNP 5 compression (that ALL HST's have but should be disabled!) V42Bis compresses BETTER then MNP 5 and compresses ONLY if it is for any use! V42Bis is NOT compatible with V32/V32Bis of the same reason as V42 If you have a V32 ONLY modem and call a HST the highest rate you will get is 2400 BPS with Datacompression (hopefully V42Bis!) the same if you call a V32 ONLY with a HST! Calling a DualStandard with a HST or V32 will connect in the highest possible rate! (14400 or 9600) in V32 OR HST If you are thinking of buying a high speed modem you should buy a HST OR DualStandard from US Robotics (as US Robotics are the ONLY copany having the HST standard ( (C) by them!) v32Bis is faster then HST but most of the BBSes have only HST. for a BBS DualStandard is the best thing to have. (well the DS is the best modem for called up lines in the world actually) There ARE other highspeed standards like the trailblaizer but those standards are BOTH EXPENSIVE and bad and not soo used! If you get problems feel free to call my BBS (plase have your settings in a Capture!) or leave a message to 'Chucky Gang' at the Elite boards! (mostly in Sweden but in the US too!) or write to: 2:203/507.2@fidonet@john hertell Conect me ONLY after you have done *EVERYTHING* *EXACTLY* As told in this text and you still got problems! NOT If you have skipped to copy a file or set anything.... and hey there actually ARE A Manual for your modem! (I'm a LITTLE bit tired on guys who asks lots of questions that are answered in this textfile OR the HST Manual!) If you dont have a US Robotics HST modem (those settings maybe works on USR DS modems havent checked em out!) do NOT use the settings told in this file! check your user manual for perfect settings.... just be sure that you have RTS/CTS handling ON! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Results using those settings: From World Import While ULing Word Worth (3 DMS files) (Running on an Amiga 500! I read somewhere in a file desc of SETHST.LZH that its already known how to set the modem! well NOT in 38400 as it seems that nearly noone with an 7.14 MHZ Amiga uses 38400!
