There has been quite alot of rumours of a 32X-type add on for the Snes, this however, is not going to happen. Instead Nintendo has announced that any developer will be able to use their new 16-32 bit co-processor (The power of the CPU is still undetermined) that is built into the cartridge just like a Super FX chip. This new CPU will run at a rapid 10Mhz, plus it's also capable of paralell processing with the Snes CPU... so basically this gives the Snes 13.58 Mhz instead of the normal speed 3.58 Mhz. And even better is the fact that sprite scaling, rotation, and texture mapped polygons are built into the chip. Also, any software maker can buy this chip for the amazing price of $2.00 per unit. Compare that to the Super FX chip that costs about $8.00. Companies now using this chip are as follows - Electro Brain, Konami, Rare, Nintendo, Seta and Takara. Shoshinkai Show in Japan, Nintendo's own show where all the japanese software houses show off their latest games. This year the game of the show had to be Square's Chrono Trigger, a stunning blend of Secret Of Mana and Final Fantasy with fully-animated characters in 256 colour graphics. Another RPG that caught viewers attention was Namco's Tale Phantasia, a massive game which includes an incredible amount of speech-samples. The idea is that whenever a spell is cast in the game, the magic user actually utters the incantation of sorcery. Now how's that for realism? How about Nintendo themselves? Well, they had amongst others a new Super FX game called Fighting Polygon, which is, if you haven't guessed it already, a Virtua Fighter clone for your humble Snes. Thirteen characters must engage in martial art duels, with the added challenge of a limited arena. The range of characters available is impressive, with cyborgs, lizardmen and praying mantis included alongside the more traditional human fighters. The game that was shown was at an early stage, and even though if it moved smoothly, it still lacked detail in the characters. There were no release date as yet. Unconfirmed Conversions ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The following arcade games have been rumoured for Snes-conversion: Aliens Vs Predators Capcom (Can't be worse than Activisions attempt) Blood Warriors Kaneko (Another fighting game...) Eco Fighters Capcom (Well, this one's close to official!) Martial Champion Konami (No turtles? thanks...) Night Warriors Capcom (Vampires, Werewolves... and Fireballs!) Ninja Baseball Men Irem (With a title like that it must be good!) Punisher Capcom (Final Fight with guns) Perfect Fighters Konami (Biiiiiiig Bosses!) Tower Of Doom Capcom (Yes Please! Action-Rpg of highest quality!) RPG Corner ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ CHRONO TRIGGER Ok, first we have Chrono Trigger, the latest RPG from Square, which sets new standards when it comes to graphics and sound. You thought Final Fantasy III looked good? Then wait till you see this. The Story: You are Chrono, a young Japanese hero in whose village a terrible accident takes place. This accident will change the course of history for the worse, unless the accident can be undone with a little time travel. Chrono's adventure takes him and his friends across the centuries, from the forgotten past to the distant future, as he attempts to repair the damage that has been done. Helping him in this quest is his girlfriend Mai, deadly with the crossbow. Mai also holds the secret key to the entire story. Figure that out... Another female character is Lucca, an engineer and technical expert who likes to solve problems with the aid of her inventions. She can also offer a little assistance when Robo, the mechanical warrior from the future, needs maintenance. Lucca is a resourceful accomplice, but be careful - sometimes her inventions will get you into trouble. Kaeru is a brave knight, a swordsman, a gentleman - and also a frog! Although he was born human, an unhappy encounter has left him cursed with an amphibian form. By helping Chrono he hopes he might one day be returned to his true shape. Eila is the world's first female warrior, clad in nothing but fur she comes from the Stoneage. Aggressive and short-tempered, she never hesitates to slam her massive club into anything she dislikes. Ok, that's all about Chrono Trigger... next up is WONDERPROJECT 'J' Now, this game also has good graphics and sound, however not in the same league as Chrono Trigger. The gameplay differs quite alot from the usual RPG, as it's more remniscent of the LucasArt adventures with a pointer to click where the main character is to go. The Story: WonderProject 'J' takes place on Kolulo Island, which means the 'round' island, where both humans and androids (half-human, half-robots called 'Gijin') have always lived in peace. Unfortunately, a recent argument between the two races has damaged their relationship and threatens to escalate into a serious conflict. Although the reason for this opposition isn't entirely clear, the good Doctor Jebet Lamarq is extremely disappointed, it was after all he, who created the androids. In response to the problem he begins working on a new android, Gijin no 4649, or 'Pino'. Inside Pino there exists a secret and special device known as Circuit J. Nobody knows what will happen when Circuit J is activated, but according to Doctor Jebet it will solve the dispute once and for all. However, just before Pino is completed and the circuit activated, Jebet gets kidnapped by soldiers of Kolulo Castle. Pino is left alone with Tinker, an interface robot made to communicate with Pino, and that's where the game begins. Tinker resembles a small fairy, and the player moves Tinker around the screen to 'advice' Pino on where to go and what to do. Now follows some of the many characters you are bound to meet on your quest. Gijin 46 - A wise old android who will offer much help and advice, especially in the early stages of the game. Mimi Angelight - A 16-year-old woman who runs a restaurant for Gijin. She understands Gijin very well and has earnt their respect over the years Jane Nora - The King's bodyguard, she is young and clever and will cause an endless amount of trouble for Pino when he tries to meet the King. Mesala - The King's advisor, and a very wicked one aswell. He hates Gijin and wouldn't hesitate to kill them all in the name of Kolulo. Princess Tiffany - She'd like to meet some Gijin and understand the political situation better, but Mesala keeps her locked up in the castle. King Kolulu the Third - Although he has an interest in machines and industry, his opinions of Gijin have been severely warped by Mesala. Ok, that's it for Rpg Corner this time...
