The "Secret" Technique of Transcendental Meditation Meditation is (obviously) not an "occult" practice (despite what Christian zealots suggest). Most meditators do so to increase their self-control, happiness, to relieve stress and other mundane motives. It is however an extremely useful part of a magician's training. The TM technique is the least complex form of meditation. I have included it here because it would cost you a small fortune to be personally instructed, so read on and save yourself money. 1. Choose a quiet environment. It is important to choose a quiet setting that contains as few distractions - auditory or visual - as possible. 2. A mantra - this is a single word or phrase repeated by the meditator. Although the Maharishi insists that only TM instructors trained in "the art of selecting a sound or word to correspond to the special quality of the individual" may confer the mantra on the individual, this is probably a legacy of the Hindu roots of the Maharashi and hence 'his' technique. One mantra from a choice of only 16 is given at the first TM initiation. Which one you get depends on your age at the time of initiation. The list is as follows:- Age Mantra Age Mantra 0-11 Eng 26-29 Shiring 12-13 Em 30-34 Shirim 14-15 Enga 35-39 Hiring 16-17 Ema 40-44 Hirim 18-19 Leng 45-49 Kiring 20-21 Lem 50-54 Kirim 22-23 Lenga 55-59 Sham 24-25 Lema 60+ Shama After you have been initiated & have received your mantra, you become eligible to fork out for an 'Advanced Technique' which is supposed to speed your progress towards Cosmic Consciousness. This is another mantra and consists of adding the word 'Shri' - IE if you were initiated at age 30, your new mantra would be 'Shri Shirim'. For a further payment you can then be initiated into a second 'Advanced Technique'*. This consists of being given yet another mantra. This time the suffix 'Namah' is added. Your new mantra (using the same example as above) would now be 'Shri Shirim Namah'. In actual fact, any sound, word, mantra, or phrase will bring forth the same physiological changes achieved by TM, so apart from not choosing a word with negative connotations (such as 'War', 'Hate', and so forth), you can pretty much please yourself. 3. Take a passive attitude - basically this means not worrying about distracting thoughts; if they occur, attention is simply refocussed on the mantra. 4. Sit in a comfortable position - there should be no undue muscular tension. Most adherents use a sitting position of some sort; many find a cross-legged position (not necessarily the Eastern full lotus position) to be most-effective. Alternatively, try kneeling in Japanese fashion. The meditation technique is as follows:- 1. Sit quietly and unmoving in whatever comfortable position has been chosen. 2. Close your eyes to prevent any visual distraction. 3. Relax all muscles. Start with the feet and progress up to the face. This may take a while at first but with practice most people can achieve complete muscle relaxation in less than 1 minute. It may help at first to tense each muscle in order to feel where the tension lies, then relax the muscle. 4. Breathe through your nose. Focus on your breathing, ensuring that it is deep. Only your stomach should be moving up and down while you breathe. Remain consciously aware of your breathing and utter the mantra during exhalation. 5. Continue this for 15 to 20 minutes (*according to some sources, meditators using the 'Advanced Technique' are told to lengthen their meditation period to 1 hour instead of the 20 minutes used by beginners). When finished, sit quietly for a couple of minutes before opening your eyes; then stay in the meditation position with the eyes open for a few minutes longer. A good stretch will help you return to normal everyday consciousness. If you are unable to achieve a deep level of relaxation initially; maintain a passive attitude and allow relaxation to occur at its own pace. Try to practice the technique once or twice a day. This should not be immediately after eating a meal or immediately before going to bed.
