                   The Buddy System for AmigaDOS Version 2

"IS THIS ALL OF THE DOCUMENTATION?"

In case you're wondering, THIS IS IT!  We at HelpDisk, Inc., have made
extreme efforts to provide you with a reference & learning system that
is complete and easy to use.  Our concept is simple: learn with the
Buddy System, learn on your computer and learn by using!  For this reason,
the documentation you are holding, is all you need to get started.  The
following information will give you the details on how to start up on
a floppy-based system or how to install the Buddy System on a harddrive.
Once this is done, you can get complete information online - directly
from the Buddy System itself.  You will need:

o an Amiga Computer (Any Model) with at least 1 Megabyte of RAM, 2
  floppy drives OR 1 harddrive & 1 or more floppy drives.

o AmigaDOS (Kickstart and Workbench) Release Version 2.  (NOTE: Although
  the Buddy System was designed for AmigaDOS 2, the hypertext interface
  will operate under version 1.3.  We have also included separate 
  demonstrations that will run under AmigaDOS 1.3)

o Your two Buddy System diskettes: DISK 1 & DISK 2

       DOUBLE-CLICK: to click a mouse button twice, rapidly
       DRAG: to click & hold the left button and move the mouse
       CLICK or SELECT: to click once & release

FLOPPY DRIVE USAGE

As a precaution, make sure DISK 1 & DISK 2 are WRITE-PROTECTED.
(you should be able to see through the hole at the corner of the disk).

1. Place a stock Workbench disk (preferably a backup copy & not your
   original!) into DF0: and Reboot (press CTRL & Left Amiga & Right
   Amiga).

2. Place the Buddy System DISK 1 into your other drive.  You must have
   at least 2 floppy drives.  Otherwise you will not be able to access 
   all of the Visual Demonstration.

3. After the Workbench screen has loaded all the icons, double-click
   the DISK 1 icon to open its window.

4. Double-Click the BuddySystem drawer on DISK 1.  This will open
   another window containing the Buddy System program.  Under its icon
   you will see: BSA.

5. Double-Click the BSA program icon to start the Buddy System.  After
   a few moments, the Buddy System will welcome you using the Amiga's
   speech synthesizer.

HARD DRIVE USAGE

You will need 1.5 Megabytes of free space on your harddrive.

You must have either Workbench 1.3 or 2, properly installed on your
harddrive.  All of the system directories and files found on a stock
Workbench disk should exist on the drive.  Proceed by starting up your
system normally; the Workbench should be loaded.

A utility program has been included to make installation of the Buddy
System onto your harddrive a simple procedure.  All you must do, is
decide where to install the Buddy System on your harddrive.  This
location can be any available harddrive partition (with 1.5 Megs free),
or a drawer within a partition.  In either case, make sure that the
icon for that partition or drawer is visible on the Workbench.

1. Locate the icon, in the Buddy System drawer of DISK 1, called 
   HDinstall and click it once with the left button.

2. Hold down either SHIFT key on your keyboard.

3. Double-click the icon of the harddrive partition or drawer that you
   have chosen for the installation.

4. A message window will appear, to verify your selection.  Just read
   the information carefully and follow the prompts that it provides.
   If you have done everything correctly up to this point, you will be
   able to proceed with the installation.

5. The window will display the running status of the installation.  You
   will see the name of each file as it is being installed and you will
   be notified if there are any problems.

6. If you only have a single floppy drive, you will be prompted for DISK 2
   after the contents of DISK 1 have been transferred.

When the installation successfully completes, you will have a new 
BuddySystem drawer on your harddrive within the location you selected.
You may now double-click the BSA program icon in the drawer, to start
the Buddy System.  After a few moments, the Buddy System will welcome
you, using the Amiga's speech synthesizer.

QUICK START

The Buddy System operates, almost transparently, within your Amiga.
That is, until you press the HELP key or double-click the right mouse
button.  This activates The Buddy System's HELP MODE by displaying
a HelpDisk icon as your mouse pointer.  When you activate this HELP
MODE, you can enter the Buddy System's reference and learning 
environment.

The following methods displays the Buddy System's Index:

o select Index Of Topics from the Buddy System's Workbench menu
 
o press the Help key twice 

o press any character key

o double-click the right mouse button

The best way to start using the Buddy System is to select the 
"Instructions" item from the Index.  This is a standard Buddy System
hypertext file.  It will quickly get you acquainted with the Buddy 
System and its hypertext interface.

To exit HELP MODE, just press the Escape key.

That's it!  You should now have the Buddy System for AmigaDOS up
and running.
