THE BUDDY SYSTEM FOR PAGESTREAM 2.1 Typed by SKID ROW. Edited by PARASITE. The Buddy System supplements your PageStream manual by providing you with on-line assistance at the touch of a key, the Help key, that is. Once loaded, you will have instant access to text descriptions and narrated demonstrations for ALL of the functions available within PageStream. Before continuing, make sure that you have the following available: o an Amiga Computer (Any Model) with at least 1.5 Megabytes of memory; 2 floppy drives OR 1 harddrive & 1 or more floppy drive(s) o PageStream version 2.1 (from SoftLogik, Corp.) as originally purchased. You will need the following disks: PageStream: (Disk 1) Drivers: (Disk 2) Fonts1: (Disk 3) o Your two (2) Buddy System diskettes, DISK 1 & DISK 2 TERMINOLOGY: DOUBLE-CLICK: to click the left mouse button twice, rapidly. DRAG: to click & hold the left mouse button and move the mouse CLICK OR SELECT: to click once & release with the left button FLOPPY DRIVE USAGE: Make sure the tab on DISK 1 is WRITE-PROTECTED (up; you should be able to see through the hole at the corner of the disk). The tab on DISK 2 should be WRITE-ENABLED (down; the disk hole should be closed). Reboot (press CTRL & Left Amiga & Right Amiga). Place the Buddy System DISK 1 into DF0: (the first drive) Once the Workbench screen is loaded, double-click on the DISK 1 icon to open its window. FIRST TIME INSTALLATION Double-click on the StartUp icon. StartUp is a program that will create the Environment disk necessary to run the Visual Demonstrations. This involves DISK 2 that was included in your Buddy System package. The StartUp program will automatically guide you through the installation procedure which should take a few minutes. During that time, DISK 2 will be formatted and verified. The required files, including PageStream itself, will then be copied from your original PageStream disks to DISK 2. Just read the prompts carefully and insert the appropriate disk at each request. Once the StartUp program has successfully created your environment disk, you shouldn't have to run it again. You can make Backup copies of DISK 2 using the normal disk copying procedures (consult your AmigaDOS manual). At this point, you will have 2, ready-to-use Buddy System disks. Make sure that you have DISK 1 in DF0: and DISK 2 in your other floppy drive. Double-Click on the drawer named BuddySystem on DISK 1. This will open a window to display the actual tutorial program. HARD DRIVE USAGE You will need 1 Megabyte of free space on your harddrive. PageStream must be installed on your harddrive before installing The Buddy System. Please refer to the documentation and instructions provided by SoftLogik regarding PageStream's harddrive installation. The HD_Install program that is included with PageStream will automate the process for you. The HD_Install program should be used to ensure correct installation and operation with The Buddy System. 3 steps are necessary for setting up the Buddy System on your harddrive: (1). The Buddy System must be placed in the same drawer where PageStream is installed. This is done by dragging the BuddySystem drawer icon from DISK 1 into the PageStream drawer on your harddrive. (2). Once installation of the BuddySystem drawer is completed, the Buddy System program icon (BSPS) on the harddrive must be configured. This is done by selecting the BSPS icon in the BuddySystem drawer and selecting Inco from the Workbench menu. Locate the TOOLTYPES field in this window. Click on the arrow buttons to move through the selections available until you see one that reads: PAGESTREAM-DISK_2:PageStream2 This line is used to specify the path to PageStream on your harddrive so that the Buddy System can automatically load PageStream. It also specifies the name used for PageStream (ie. PageStream2) on the harddrive. Click inside the field so that a cursor appears for editing the text. Assuming you have installed the BuddySystem drawer into the same harddrive drawer where PageStream exists, edit the line to read: PAGESTREAM=/PageStream2 Press the RETURN key and Select Save to exit the Info window and store the changes. (3). The final step involves copying the Harddrive PSPrefs file into the BuddySystem drawer on the harddrive. You can find the Harddrive PSPrefs file, along with its icon, in the DISK 1 window (the window opened by double-clicking on the DISK 1 icon). To proceed, drag the Harddrive PSPrefs icon from DISK 1 into the BuddySystem drawer on your harddrive. You should end up with the Buddy System program, BSPS, and the Harddrive PSPrefs within th BuddySystem drawer on your harddrive. You should now be able to Double-Click the BSPS icon within the BuddySystem drawer and have it run The Buddy System, the speech narrator and load PageStream automatically from your harddrive. When PageStream is loaded this way, it uses the PSPrefs configuration file that is located in the BuddySystem drawer. PageStream must be loaded this way in order to ensure that the correct paths will be set up during the visual demonstrations. If you load PageStream separately, by clicking on the PageStream icon itslelf, it will use the PSPrefs file located within the PageStream drawer - not within the BuddySystem drawer. If this occurs, the visual demonstrations will be disabled and only the text information will be available. USING THE BUDDY SYSTEM FOR PAGESTREAM After you have installed the Buddy System either on floppy or harddrive, double-click on the BSPS program icon to start the Buddy System. The BSPS program will load the Buddy System interface, run the Speech Narrator, and automatically load PageStream either from DISK 2 or from the harddrive depending on your installation. A window will appear to notify you that the Buddy System has been loaded. Click the Continue button and wait for the PageStream program screen to appear. PageStream is automatically, loaded in 4 color, Non-Interlaced mode. This is the required mode for accessing the VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS. If PageStream is started separately, The Buddy System will load in Text-Only mode. Only text information will be presented; the demonstrations will not be available. The BSPS program must be used to start PageStream & The Buddy System interface in order to have VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS Available! The Buddy System shares PageStream's screen area so that you can use PageStream as you normally would. PageStream's functions are not hindered in any way. The only difference is that help is now immediately available by pressing the Help key or Double-Clicking with the right mouse button. This activates The Buddy System and PageStream even if you are doing something in another program. Help mode is indicated by the mouse pointer changing to a Help Disk icon. In this mode, selecting an icon from the toolbox or a function from the menu will display related information. TEXT DESCRIPTIONS All major PageStream functions have text descriptions. This text is displayed in a window directly on PageStream's screen. A scroll bar exists on the right side of the text window to allow moving through the longer descriptions. The Text displays take advantage of 'Hypertext' style referencing. This means that you can actually click on a word in the display for even more information if it exists. When you click on a word, a search is made for any possible links to other text files. If a link is found, the associated text file will be displayed. This method of linking topics creates a very efficient information database and allows you to get to the information you need immediately. Words that have definite links to additional information are highlighted for visibility. If a clicked word doesn't have a defined link, the KEYWORD INDEX will be displayed. This allows you to search through a defined list of available topics. Pressing the right mouse button while you are in the text display, also displays the KEYWORD INDEX. Additionally, if you type any alphabetic character on the keyboard, the KEYWORD INDEX will appear and the list will be alphabetically positioned using the character you typed. If you are finished reading and want to get back into PageStream for actual work, you can close the text display by clicking the close gadget in the upper left corner of the text window or you can press the ESCape key. Help mode will remain active until you click directly on PageStream's screen, click in an open PageStream document window or press the ESCape key again. Anytime you enter PageStream, the Buddy System is placed in a Sleep Mode until you press the Help key or Double-Click the Right Button again. VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS The heart of the Buddy System lies in the Visual Demonstration. These guided tour demonstrations take place in an actual PageStream document window. During a demonstration, The Buddy System's AntiMouse interface will take control of your Amiga's mouse and keyboard to visually show how certain functions work. All you have to do is sit back and pay attention to what is taking place on the screen. After the demonstration is over, you can go right into PageStream to try what was presented. Visual Demonstrations are accessed through certain text displays. If a particular topic has a demonstration available, it will be highlighted and preceded by the phrase: VISUAL DEMONSTRATION AVAILABLE - > Demo.name Just click on the Demonstration's name to view it. Demonstrations can be paused, if necessary, by pressing the spacebar. It may take a few moments before the demo actually pauses. Press the spacebar again to restart the demonstration. You can abort a demonstration in progress by pressing the ESCape key. There is a short delay before each demonstration as the Buddy System loads a previously saved Demo template file. This ensures that the demonstration will replay properly and that any document you may be working with will not be affected. After the demonstration is completed, you are given the choice of closing the demonstration window or leaving it open so that you can examine any objects that may have been created by the demonstration. NOTE: Each open window in PageStream occupies memory. Having many windows open may exhaust your system's memory. Close any unnecessary windows. THE NARRATOR Accompanying each demonstration is a Status Window that displays all the keyboard and mouse events as they are taking place. In addition to the visual display provided by the Status Window and the demonstration themselves, the Narrator provides detailed, synthesized speech commentary and captioning. Each comment of the Narrator is captioned at the top of the screen to make certain that you understand exactly what is going on. You can adjust the speech parameters of the Narrator: volume, speed, and pitch, by selecting Adjust Narrator from the File menu during Help mode. Click the adjustment window's close gadget when you have completed making adjustments. NOTES: DO NOT move or obscure PageStream's Toolbox if you want to view demonstrations. DO NOT change the macro defintions attached to the F8, F9, and F10 keys. These macros are critical to the operation of the VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS. DO NOT use SAVE DOC DEFAULTS while using the Buddy System. The PSPrefs file affects the operation of the demos. If you quit out of PageStream while the Buddy System is running, you can shut down the sleeping Buddy System program by pressing: Left-Amiga & HELP. Due to space limitations on floppy based systems, printing during Buddy System sessions can not be performed. Only harddrive users can set up printing configurations and actually print. End.
