Usage

You can find more information about ShapeShifter and usage with external video drivers in the ShapeShifter manual but the operating instructions are explained here too.

You have to make the following configuration changes before you can start using TurboEVD with the ShapeShifter. Start ShapeShifter and click the top-most button for graphics preferences. Select your type of display as external and type in path and name of the TurboEVD executable. Alternatively you can just use the file requester. Then go to the graphics mode selection and choose your preferred screen mode and size. Remember that the screen width must be a multiple of 64 for usage with TurboEVD. Finally choose refreshing rate and the amount of colours you want to use in Macintosh.

These two are the most important selections when considering the performance of the Macintosh emulation and the "snappyness" of its display. TurboEVD supports currently 2, 4, 16, 256 and 32768 colour modes so selecting 24 bit true colour has no effect. Generally speaking the less colours, the faster the emulation is and feels like. Remember though that the screen mode you selected plays also a key role here. Multiscan and hires modes produce more DMA contention hence slowing CHIP ram speed. See performance chapter for more details.

Refreshing rate is discussed more thoroughly in the configuration chapter. You can leave it to one (1) for now. Select MMU refresh and leave the others options as they are or consult Shapeshifter manual for their meanings.

TurboEVD supports two monitors. The two displays show as different screens and you can swap between them like with normal amiga screens. This feature can be proven extremely handy in certain situations. You might have a 800x600 screen for normal Macintosh use but this is little slow for most games. Normally you would have to shutdown and reconfigure the display parameters. With two monitors you can setup a second Macintosh screen which could be 320x200 in size. This mode is among other things nice when playing doom and other 3d games.
