Gateway honcho/bazillionaire Ted Waitt raised a bit of hell with a speech in which he criticized--obliquely--the Microsoft-Intel duopoly's power. Is there a bite behind all this bark? "Stay tuned," he hints. Jai Singh in Perspectives. ----------------------------------------- May 23, 1997 In the one-ring circus of the personal computer industry, the absolute ringmasters are Microsoft and Intel. When these companies tell PC makers to jump, the reply is never "why?" but "how high?" The duopoly pretty much decides what hardware and software the Compaqs, Dells, and Gateways are going to ship--and when. When Intel decrees the mainstream processor is 166-MHz Pentium, you suddenly don't see many machines sporting 100-MHz chips. And if the PC makers still don't get it, the chip giant simply discontinues the product line--a la the 486 processor or the 60- and 90-MHz Pentium. But this week the chairman and CEO of PC-maker Gateway indicated he is getting tired of being just another circus act. He suggested that he'd like to stop asking "how high?" when Wintel comes calling. Ted Waitt, the newly minted technobillionaire out of Sioux City, South Dakota, used a speech at an industry conference to strongly suggest the Wintel duopoly is not good for the industry. "We can't let the creators of this technology lead and the world follow blindly....We should not allow ourselves to be intimidated by some technology companies," he told the audience of several hundred hardware executives and industry analysts. When I asked him afterwards if he meant that Microsoft and Intel were the intimidators, he said with a knowing grin: "You can read between the lines." He also pronounced: "Technology for technology's sake is not innovation. What we in the industry have to be concerned about is what products do, as opposed to what the processing power is." The operating system, he added, gets too much attention. It should be "hidden away" so users can do their work instead of spending 27 percent of their time just fiddling with Windows. This sure sounds like a person who's mad enough not to take it anymore. But the reality is also that Gateway has become a $5 billion company riding the coattails of the Wintel juggernaut; Waitt has become a billionaire by espousing the Wintel business model Industry watchers were surprised at his subtle and not-so-subtle jabs at Wintel. One said Waitt sure was being braver than usual. Another said he had the "Compaq syndrome." Compaq not only publicly sparred with Intel, but went so far as to push non-Intel PCs. But then reality sank in: Compaq backed down and now goes along with Intel's plans. It may well be that Waitt's comments were a fluke. Maybe he was suddenly struck by foot-in-mouth disease. But his actions this past week suggest he may truly posses the courage of his convictions. On May 16, Gateway formally acquired Amiga. Yes, you read right: Amiga. The computer that blazed the multimedia, 32-bit multitasking, and plug-and-play trail back in the '80s still attracts a loyal core of users that cling stubbornly to its wreckage, forming clubs to exchange spare parts and software. Waitt pulled it out of bankruptcy and plans to run it as a wholly owned subsidiary. Jim Taylor, senior vice president of global marketing at Gateway, said in a statement following the completion of the deal: "It is exciting to know how much support Amiga continues to enjoy. Every Amiga customer should know that we share their belief in this product and we believe that it has a strong role in our multimedia computing world." Of course, Amiga does not use Intel chips. Waitt implied that he would consider using the AMD K6 chip. He also warned industry watchers to look out for more interesting news over the next two months. Could it be that Waitt is coalescing forces to fight the Wintel hegemony?
