Today I would like to present a suggestion to you, or you can call it a plea if you want, since I'm ready to go down on my knees to make you listen to it. I've been walking with amiga by my side for as long as I can remember. It has been a dear companion for me. We have shared all the fun, all the tears, and all the dreams together for many years. In a way, It has been the best friend I've ever had. But now, my dear friend is sick. Very sick. He is dying. I don't think anyone can disagree. Amiga is down on it's knees, to week to stand on its feet, reaching out with a tiny little hand, once so powerful, and begs us for help. I cannot, I WILL not, just stand there and watch my best friend die, without offering my help. And so I write to you, and hope that you are an honest man, with love in your heart, not a cold blooded snake that can watch his best friend die without lifting a finger to help him. I have been around a while, and I hope I know the mechanics of the scene. The things that make the wheel go around and around. On that basis I have a suggestion, that I believe will work, and cure our friend. If not totaly, so atleast it will give him the chance to stand on his own feet again, not beeing dependant of every little help he can get. So listen me out. The point of you guys cracking games, is not to play them. I don't even think it's to give it to the people. I think the main force behind cracking is PRESTIGE. FAME. ACKNOLEDGEMENT. It is a competition. Who gets the major first? Who will crack it the fastest and release it to the world to see that he and his group are the best? That is the main core of what you are doing. We all want to be apreciated for what we do. I understand that. Therefore I am not begging you guys to STOP cracking games. That is what you do best. That is your bussiness. No, you can go on cracking games. But I'd like to set up a whole new system for it. A new set of rules. I don't believe those rulez will change your activities that much. You will be able to go on just like before, but with a slight change. And amiga will have a chance. I will explain: I suppose you all know that software is the most important thing for the success of a computer. I will not explain that in detail, since it would take up far too much space. But MONEY is the main thing. If a game for Vic20 would sell 20 million copys, then There would be LOTS of games produced for it, no matter how old it is. Software companys want to make a profit. That's their motivation. Amiga software is NOT selling satisfactory today. And yes, we all are to blaim for that. Soft companies leave the amiga, after making losses on the latest games they've developed. The thing is no one buys them. Not me, not you, not anyone on the scene. I've checked that up through asking quite many people, and no one could remember when he last bought an original. 90% of all amiga users have access to an elite board. Games do not need to be bought. They can be downloaded within 20 mins. My idea is to raise sales of amiga games, to make companies interested in trying out the market again, to keep you guys happy cracking, and to keep the scene happy still getting majors. Sounds impossible eh? not Necessarily. This is how I want to do it: 1. An CRACKER WHQ should be set up. I suggest an established board like BOONDOCKS, but may even be able to set up a board, ONLY for you cracker guys, with no one else in it. 2. You go on and try to get hold of originals, and crack them as usual. nothing changes here. 3. The change comes here. When you have cracked the game, and are ready for release, you call this WHQ. You enter the special area, say we call it PRESIDENTS OF AMIGA area or something. And you upload the game THERE. Now, in this area, only YOU guys have access. no ordinary mortals, no other sysops, trainermakers, traders or whatever. Just you cracking group people. The true powerpeople. In this way it's VERY easy to determine who cracked the game first, since all crack will always be released on that board, in that area. So we will have a true winner on every crack. The group that will get full credit for it. The group that wins the copyright to release it. No other group needs to release their own crack of the same game, 2 hrs or one day later. Now, here comes the tricky part. the part that will help amiga. 4. The group that releases the crack first, gets the COPYRIGHT for releasing the game. it's them, and no one else. But you will NOT release it right at that point. An X-factor will be decided by all of us. Say 60 days. That means, we decide who the winner is on the crack, but the game will not be released to public untill 60 days AFTER THE GAME HITS THE SHOPS. This way, the "lamers" will buy the game instead of waiting, especially if it is a good game or util, say Simon the sorcerer 3 or Worms 2. Then even *I* As a sysop that seldom plays games, will go and buy it. It would be even better if the date is set to SIX MONTHS after shop-release. * Now, that will ofcoz have its drawbacks. For starters, There will be no released majors in say, 2 months. SO WHAT? After that, the majors will come in in the usual rate, only difference, they will have been in the shops for 2 months. That is the DAMN FUCKING SMALLEST thing we can do for amiga. Let the game be avaible some time. * Next argument, would be "but some lame group will release it anyhow, and steal our hard work, and our rightful credit and glory". Sure, I say, that is a possibility. A very logical possibility, but I can prevent it. All Sysops understand the situation amiga is in. Everyone I talked to Is ready to support me. For starters I have this chart, Dreamchart, that is the biggest chart on the scene for 2 years now without competition. In this chart there are apx. 110 boards, including all the best in the world, with very few exceptions (the german boards, I have no HQ there) Anyhow, traders also want to be famous. they prefer trading on boards connected to dreamchart, so that their name can show in the dreamchart. Dreamchart is right now including 7000 traders. To be in dreamchart is an important thing for many sysops, especially those already in. I will emmidiately set a rule for dreamcharts, saying that if ANY group does an "illegal" release, their release is to be nuked AT ONCE and their members are to be deleted from the board with NO CHANCE of entering again. If sysops don't follow that rule, they are blacklisted from dreamcharts forever. And It's my believe I don't really need that rule, sysops will understand and follow the rules without any threats, but just to make you guys more comfortable. Sure, they can release it on another board, but what's the point? It will not spread, since all good boards will nuke it as soon as they see it. AND the members of that group as well. And no matter if they release it, the trouth will come out. People will be informed of who the real winners of the release was, and we will give so much shit to the "lame" crackers they will be afraid to set their foot on this scene again. You guys are respected cracking groups, and if one group is going to get the rage of all of you together, they will wither and fall, crawling in the dust. Hated by the entire scene. This will be made clear to all in the scene. Breaking the rules, Will have heavy conseqences. It will be in the ul-rules of all boards. It will be as eall everywhere. The scene will support the idea. They will help. Especially if all you guys go out and support the idea. All you heavy groups. People look up to you. they respect you. they understand. That may sound like a dictatorship, and perhaps it is, but It's the only hope we have. We must reorganize the scene in some way, to make sure the goodies gets to the hands of the right people, those deserving it, and not in the hands of every lame non-scene person, whose only job to get this game was call a local bbs, and using the only key he knows, d , to get the game days, sometimes weeks before it is released. Now, ok you say, suppose we agree to those terms. But we don't think that will help SHIT. There will not be more amiga games just coz of this. And I say it will. You see, nothing like this has ever happened to a computer before. This is a world firstie. I will contact all computer mags and papers, and tell them the story. Believe me, many will write about it. It's a great thing to have in a paper, either as a note, or as a full article. Even Mac and Pc papers. All are affected by piracy. All are against it. they ARE going to write about this. It will be great headlines for them. You know... PIRATES SAVE THE AMIGA? Maybe they are going to make a small suggestion in the PC magz, like "maybe this is something the pirates on PC also would consider". You know Magazines. This is a great subject for them to write about. Amiga magz would do a bigger coverage. I will make sure to list all the groups that are in this project, so that your names will be printed. Anyhow, he positive effects will be that people will READ about it. They will think. They will admire our spirit. Understanding will perhaps rise in their heads. "that must be a good computer, that can unite those people like that, and make them do such sacrifices to keep it". But most important: SOFTWARE COMPANIES will read about it! They will give it a second thought. Releasing a game for a platform, that can GUARANTEE it will not be pirated, you must agree it will sound temptive to them. This is a faint idea, but I even think we can make a deal with some of them. Like they give Us money, say £2-3000 to "bribe" the cracking groups, and guarantee that their game will not be cracked. Maybe VISCORP will be interested in supporting this idea in some way too. You guys can even help the soft-companies make a good copy-protection. Coz there have to be one, so the ordinary people can't just copy it to a friend. The money will ofcoz be given to the group that gets the game first to the WHQ. And just to be sure, If the board is down for an hour, we will have an alternative whq too. Just in case shit happens when it comes to release. Is those changes too big for you? Are you a bunch of conservatives, not understanding that if you follow this path of yours, that you always have followed, in a VERY NEAR future there will be NO MORE majors for you to crack? In that case, please atleast consider this option, brought to you by Crisp and Franky: The least thing we can do, Is try to prove that an amiga game CAN sell good, and that it is worth for a company to develop a game, and that it can get it's money back, and do a profit. In order to prove this we need you to promise NOT to crack a major. Or maybe 2 or 3. If you don't want to leave all majors be uncracked untill they have been in the shop some days, atleast settle for a couple of them. We would like you to suggest by starting with DOPUS 5.5 I know many people want that upgrade, and are waiting for it to be cracked. What we can do, is all of you promise NOT to crack it, and go together and write a textfile, explaining why. Also, we will incourage people to buy it instead, registring, coz this program IS worth registring, if any. NO DOUBT, sales will be better then If we cracked it. Dopus will continue to be developed. We suggest Dopus 5.5 coz we can't think of anything else that is of high quality. WORMS 2 would be terrific, but unfortunately it will, to my knowledge, not be released, by roumor becoz the company expects too low sales, depending amongst other things, on the fact that it will be cracked. If we follow the 1'st option, the 2-6 month rule, I am sure they will change their mind and see it from a new perspective. They will release it. Anyhow, You guys have better check on the release market then us. We suggest you do the same on 2-3 other GOOD programs, as with dopus. DON'T CRACK IT. Explain to the scene, that it is a GOOD program, WORTH buying, and that we all have to do sacrifices for amiga to survive. They will understand. I think this text has gotten large enough. It is given to you, so that you will know what this is all about. We are hoping that you will come to our IRC conference, and discuss the matter. We already have gotten promises from heavy cracking groups, that they will come, and that just under the time it took me to write this.
