Short Usage Description ----------------------- Make sure you have seen the Interface.jpg picture in the CoyoteSound drawer. It contains information about the interface which is quite usual. To start CoyoteSound, double-click on its icon. There are currently two versions available: CoyoteSoundHF is for multi-scan monitors or multi-scan hacks like Cyber56kHz (available in the Extra drawer), the CoyoteSoundLF file is for PAL/NTSC/Euro36 screens. CoyoteSoundLF will use frequency halving for playing above 28867 Hz. After double-clicking on its icon, two windows appear: one giving some system-information before closing automatically, the other one being the main converter interface. COYOTESOUND ----------- There are two horizontal bars in which you can write the input and output filenames to work with. It is also possible to use the In/Out disk buttons and select the filenames in an ASL requester. The "In" file is the source-file which you would like to use. This file will not be modified by CoyoteSound, but is used to edit FROM. Editing is done to the destination file, which can be selected using the "Out" string. This destination file can be copied from/to, cleared, modified etc. using the buttons in CoyoteEdit. There are two "chip" buttons next to the filenames: The first one is used for checking the source-filetype. When pressing this button, CoyoteSound will update the Source Type and Bits. The second button is used for clearing the destination file. The entire destination file will be lost after selecting "Yeah!" in the "Are you sure?" requester. Next to the "chip" buttons there are two more buttons: One has two arrows drawn on it. This button is used to select the amount of bits of the source file. Pushing this button will cycle through 4/8/16-bits modes. When selecting 8/16 bits mode, the editor switches to 8/16 bits as well. So if you want 16-bits editing you should put the source-rate on 16-bits. The button underneath the 4/8/16-bits select is used for selecting between MONO/STEREO modes. However, since this is not implemented yet it will not work: Always leave the Source and Destin files on MO, which stands for MONO: Source Destin Type AIFF RAW <- Type: AIFF/8SVX/4BIT/RAW Bits MO 16 MO 8 <- Bits: MO=MONO ST=STEREO 4/8/16=number of bits ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ info info about about source destin file file and edit mode There are more buttons next to this little information display: RAW forces RAW conversion mode (instead of AIFF/8SVX), 8SVX/AIFF/4 selects which header you would like to use for the destination file. The Bits string-gadget contains a value "8". This is for conversion only, and contains the absolute number of bits for the output-file. When writing "4" in this gadget while selecting an AIFF output-file, this means that the input file will be converted to an AIFF 16-bits output file with 12-bits masked out: This leaves only 4-bits sound-quality left in the output-sample after conversion. The final few buttons in the main interface are "Convert", "Loss", "Edit" and "Coyote". Coyote is the about requester which is not working now... "Convert" will convert the source-file to the destination-file using the selected options. "Loss" is a loss-calculator. It will calculate the amount of absolute data lost after converting to different frequency/bit-formats. All the values are hexadecimal and divided by 256 and sometimes they are not even correct... Finally, "Edit" enters the sample-editor, using the source-bitmode (8 or 16-bits). The source-file will be placed in the upper editor, while the destination-file will be placed in the bottom one. COYOTEEDIT ---------- Now this is the most interesting part of CoyoteSound...: CoyoteEdit. CoyoteEdit features a fast powerful DSP engine, but is currently too limited in use. However, it gives quite an impression of CoyoteSounds capabilities. First of all, you can select in the menus "Display A" and "Display B" which type of drawing is used for both waveforms. Find out for yourself which one you like best. The "Play System" menu is only useful for 68000 systems. If playing interrupts you might try the High Pri option in this menu. "Killer" will disable the screen to allow maximum chipram access. However, this is a "Killer"-mode and is therefore dangerous as well. Hold both mouse-buttons to return to Workbench if you get stuck in the "Killer" mode! Before we take a look at the "Main Menu" lets first get through the interface of CoyoteEdit itself: Play Display - Plays the entire sample, one for source and one for destin Play Range - Plays the selected range, one for source and one for destin Copy Range - Copies the selected source range to the destination file. The original destination file will be cleared and replaced by the selected source-range. Copy All - Clear the destination and copy the source-file to the destination Zoom In - Zoom into the selected range (one for source, one for destin) Zoom Out - Entirely zoom out (one for source, one for destin) Destin Copy - Copies the destination-range to the copybuffer Destin Paste - Insert the copy-buffer at the range-position of the destination file. Sample Size - Bytesize of the samples RngStart - Start of selected range RngEnd - End of selected range Delete - Delete selected destination-range Set Rate - Set the samplerate and playbuffersize. Can be every value between 3000-64000 Hz for the samplerate. Change Volume - Change the volume of the destination-range. Maximize is currently not very good :) Reverse - Reverses the destination-range. Has a little bug in the middle of the range after reversing as far as I am concerned... To set a range, click on the sample, move the mouse to the destination-position and click again. The first menu when pressing the right mouse-button is the "Main Menu". The first one selects Delfina Usage when a Delfina is present. "No" means that the Paula is used instead. "Special" enters the special window. More about this soon... Player selects Paula 8, 14 or 16 bits playing. Currently, 16-bits playing is in fact near 15-bits playing. 14-bits playing is the least CPU-intensive mode. PACK packs the input-sample to the destination-file. This is not useful yet, as the output quality stinks. UNPACK unpacks a PACK-file... "Record" sets recording mode. When this is enabled, you can select a file. The player will now automatically write to the selected file, which may as well be the destination-file. Everytime you play a file or use the DSP with recording mode enabled, a 16-bits audiofile containing all the effects is written to your selected drive. (For example, when playing a file and modifying the echo, bits etc. all these changes will appear in the written file) "Quit" quits back to CoyoteSound. Special Window -------------- Delfina Usage does the same as the button in the menu and so does 16-bit Play. "Play Window" is not working yet and neither are Makehead, Ranger and Effects. "Realtime" enters the Realtime effects chainer. More about this soon... "All" selects the entire destination file as the range, while "None" clears the entire destination-range. "Delfina" displays some interesting information about the Delfina card. The little information-display quite explains itself: HD (Dest) is the destination harddisk-space left. Realtime -------- Now this is the funny part! All the effects selected here are made audible when playing a file! You can add/delete effects while playing and everything runs in realtime. Pitchbender and Modulator may not be used multiple times or in combination with each other: This may cause a serious crash. Also, dont try to run Delfina effects on a non-Delfina machine.. Use the slider to select your effect and press "Add" to add it to the chain. You can select an effect from the chain and delete it using the "Del" button. "Info" displays the amount of effects available. A smaller buffersize (selected in the "Set Rate" requester) will make the effects more realtime. However, a smaller buffer means the machine will run out of time earlier when doing several others things at the same time. This will cause glitches in the sound. Recently tested effects are: TotalEcho - Simple echo with gadget control. Known to be ticking a bit. Recommended to put the Volume150Fast after this one to boost the sound output a little. Multiple TotalEcho->Volume150Fast will give a nice reverse echo effect. Pitchbender - Simple pitchbender (no record support) BitKiller - Quantizer, allows realtime 1-16 bits sound output TripleEcho - Flanger like effect: multiple use will cause nice effects Modulator - Nice modulator, top-left is default play. No record-support LSBMSB - If you are using Intel samples or something like that, use this to play them HalveVolume - Sets volume to 50% Gain - Gain control with gadget-control DoubleVolume - Boost volume to 200% Y-Flip - Y-Flips the sample Volume150Fast - Boosts volume to 150% TenthRate - Plays at 1/10th of the samplerate RTReverse - Useless 4k realtime reverse QuarterRate - Plays at 1/4th of the samplerate HalveRate - Plays at 1/2th of the samplerate FastDelay - Fast 4k delay effector EigthRate - Plays at 1/8th of the samplerate ClipCounter - Counts the amount of clips and shows them in a window So feel free now and take a look at this program to find out how it works!
