  Pegase is a highly optimized MPEG audio encoder, based upon the
  ISO/MPEG source code.

         =================================================
         PEGASE DOESN'T SUPPORT LAYER 3, AND WILL NEVER DO
         =================================================

    But before complaining about that, try the layer 2 by yourself.
    It is able to compete with Layer 3 (mp3) now, but the encoded
    files remain a bit larger (+25%, because you still have to use
    a bitrate greater or equal to 160 kbits/s).

  Features :
  - MPEG-1 Layer 1/Layer 2 encoding.
  - Accept AIFF, MAUD, WAV, CDDA and RAW files (16 bits samples only).
  - Really Faaaaast (2:1 ratio with a 68060/50).
  - Very high quality encoding, which make layer 2 as good as layer 3
    as long as you use a decent bitrate (>= 160 kbits/s).
  - Batch mode (can encode multiple files in one go).

 Missing :
  - Layer 3.
  - MPEG-2 support.
  - Psycho-analyzer #1.
  - 8-bit samples support.
  - Resampling.

  - AmigaOS 2.0 or better.
  - 68030/68RC040/68RC060 or a PPC 603/604e (WarpOS only).

  - EMail-ware.

  News :
  - (1.84) A long standing bug that affected 32 KHz and 48 KHz encoding
    has been removed (it was there since the first release).
  - (1.85) The psycho-acoustic analyzer has been polished (the bitstreams
    produced could differ when compared with previous versions of the
    encoder).
  - Some parts of the 32 KHz psycho-acoustic model were defined for 38 KHz
  - The 'FREQ' keyword can be used when encoding CDDA files (the default
    sampling rate remains 44100 Hz). The main purpose is to allow frontends
    to encode various file types through a PIPE.
  - Updated documentation (once again ;-) ).
