        In order to understand the whole documentation, you should
        first learn how fxPAINT works:

        @{b}fxPAINT works with several "layers" (from back to front):@{ub}
                - the picture layer
                  This is what you created or loaded into fxPAINT

                - the drawing layer  (8 Bit)
                - the alpha layer   (24 Bit)
                  These two layers are defining the areas, the effect layer
                  replaces the effect layer.

                - the effect layer
                  the effect to be calculated on the image

                fxPAINT creates the image by merging the effect layer
                and the picture layer using the data of the drawing
                and alpha-layer.

                In most cases, this is a simple rubthrough, but in
                paint-mode, fxPAINT also uses the drawing- and alpha-
                layer to dynamically calculate the effect layer and
                merge it in.

        fxPAINT offers lots of different drawing tools for every
        purpose (listed below from left to right). In general, the
        left mousebutton adds the brush to the layer, the right
        mouse-button deletes the brush from the layer. Cutting is
        an exception. If you draw a Bézier-curve, you can begin
        painting with the left mousebutton and continue with the
        right one in order to draw parts, even if your next click
        would no more fit into the window.

          Draws a continous line. You should avoid using this mode
          when @{"drawing fire" link DRAWFIRE}.

        > @{b}unlinked freehand paint@{ub} (2)
          Draws a point everywhere you draw with the mouse. The
          resulting line may not be continous.

          Draws a line.

          Draws an unfilled ellipse. If you want to draw a circle,
          keep the left shift-key pressed while painting.

          Draws a filled ellipse. If you want to draw a circle, keep
          the left shift-key pressed while paiting.

          This function smears the original picture. @{b}THIS STEP CAN`T
          BE UNDOED!!@{ub} However, layers are not supported for this.

          Draws an unfilled rectangle. If you want to draw a rectangle
          with equal width and height, keep the left shift-key pressed
          while painting.

          with equal width and height, keep the left shift-key pressed
          while painting.

          The bevelbox-drawing-tool allows you drawing gradients. For more

          Bézier-curves can be drawn in fxPAINT with three clicks:
          - first click (and draw!) the start and end-points of the
            curve

          - second and third click for two other points the line

        There are many different configurations for AMIGA-systems
        and some are @{b}very@{ub} special. In order to get out the most of
        your AMIGA, you should start with adjusting the settings
        for your system.

        Options:
                > @{b}Own screen@{ub}
                  If you don`t want fxPAINT to always run on your
                  workbench and you already have selected an
                  alternative screenmode at "Screenmode" select this
                  checkbox.

                > @{b}Screenmode@{ub}
                  A click on "<" opens a requester with all available
                  screenmodes on your system. If you have a CV PPC or
                  BV PPC, the 24Bit-modes are the fastest modes for
                  24Bit-graphics-output, for Z3-boards these normally
                  are the 15- and 16bit-modes. If you own a Z2-graphics-
                  board, try out 8- and 15bit-modes - I never owned a
                  Z2-graphics-board and therefore can`t give any real
                  recommandations. It`s hard to recommend any AGA-modes
                  for fxPAINT, but if you don`t own a graphics-board, you
                  might want to try screens with 32, 64 or 256 colors.

                  @{b}NOTE: The minimum-size for screens, so that fxPAINT
                        is still usable is 640x480!@{ub}

                > @{b}Userstatus@{ub}
                  Set your degree of experience with both the AMIGA
                  and image processing software, here.

                > @{b}No requesterimages@{ub}
                  If you want to speedup the requesters (especially
                  on AGA-systems, this option is useful) by dropping
                  the nice images, select this.

                > @{b}Bubble help@{ub}
                  Switch on/off the bubble-help of fxPAINT here.

                > @{b}fxGUI Effects@{ub}
                  fxPAINT`s GUI looks great and uses full 24bit.
                  However, if you don`t like these effects and
                  want to gear back fxPAINT`s look to a look
                  similiar to the standard OS3.x-look, deselect
                  this. On 8Bit-screens, this has no effect, as
                  fxPAINT then automatically gears down.

                > @{b}Use CGX curiosity@{ub}
                  CyberGraphX (CGX) has a quite strange feature.
                  Everyone who already had a look at the autodocs of
                  CyberGraphX might have pointed out, that there are
                  different functions for scaled and immediately
                  rendered 24bit-data (ScalePixelArray) and for direct
                  output without scaling (WritePixelArray). If you now
                  believe, that scaling needs more time, you`re wrong -
                  at least for the CV 64/3D. If you check this checkbox,
                  fxPAINT will use the scaling routine without scaling
                  instead of the direct output. To get the best
                  performance for your graphics-board, check, whether
                  that curiosity exists for your board, too.

                > @{b}Picasso96 workaround@{ub}
                  Picasso96 contains a bug in its CyberGraphX-emulation
                  when emulation ScalePixelArray - the results often look
                  very unpleasant. If you activate this workaround,
                  fxPAINT will work around this bug by replacing this
                  function through a combination of internal scaling and
                  WritePixelArray.

                > @{b}Keep dimensions@{ub}
                  If this checkbox is checked, fxPAINT will render the
                  graphics in the correct dimensions and aspects on
                  the screen. This affects all picture- and penselection-
                  gadgets as well as the @{"navigator" link NAVIGATOR}.

                > @{b}Save NewIcons@{ub}
                  If this checkbox is checked, fxPAINT will create
                  thumbnail-icons for every saved image in the newicons-
                  standard. All you need to have installed in LIBS: is
                  the newicon.library, which can be found at
                   fxPAINTCD:Tools/NewIcons/NewIconsV4/Libs/HE/

                > @{b}Use tableau@{ub}
                  fxPAINT supports every tableau, that uses the OS 3.x-
                  style of transmitting pressure-data via an extended
                  IntuiMessage-structure with additional information.
                  However, if you don`t have a tableau connected to your
                  AMIGA, switch this off in order to save some micro-
                  seconds while painting.
                  NOTE: All Haage&Partner-drivers (developed by Escena)
                        are supported, as they use the systemconform and
                        officially defined OS 3.x way for tableaus.

                > @{b}Max. Tableau-Pressure@{ub}
                  Set the maximum tableau-pressure here. Note, that a higher
                  maximum results in a higher sensitivity.

                > @{b}Max. queued mouse-steps@{ub}
                  If you have a slow AMIGA, that can`t keep up with a flood
                  of mouse- or tableau-inputs, raise the value of this setting.

                > @{b}PPC merge barrier@{ub}
                  As fxPAINT also has to do context switches in order to pass
                  the mouse-input to the PPC, it can happen, that it is faster
                  to do a small calculation on the 68K instead of doing it on
                  the PPC, flush the caches and switch back. If a 68K-emulation
                  is finally available, the need for a merge-barrier might be
                  at zero, which would result in 100% PPC-usage. The value of the
                  barrier indicates the number of pixels, that have to be changed
                  before the PPC is used. Experiment with different values or set
                  it to zero, if you want to get full PPC usage (which might be
                  slower in some cases).

        You can "draw" fire with fxPAINT easier than ever before
        on the AMIGA or any other platform. Basically, drawing
        fire is a combination of several modes:
                > draw with a special, solid pen
                > draw with "unlinked freehand paint"
                > draw with a special mode of Paint (see options)
                > draw with a special combination of colors
                  to create a gradient

        As I thought, that it`s simply too complicated and time-
        intensive to set all these settings by hand, I created the

        Mr. Gutenberg has made one of the greatest inventions
        of all times - he made it possible to really produce
        books instead of copying them by hand. Mr. Gutenberg`s
        invention also made it possible to print newspapers.
        But these had a problem: How shall images by printed
        with only black and white available ? This problem was
        soluted with dithering which basically simply replaces
        some pixels by a combination of black and white creating
        grayscales for the eye. However, we can print in color
        today, too and still basically use the same princinple to
        build the image of C, M, Y and K-components.

        It was quite recently that dithering became popular on
        computers though today`s graphic chips can display 24Bit
        without any problem. One reason for this is for sure the
        internet: The wide-spread file-format GIF allows only 256
        colors (and a licence ....).

        fxPAINT offers you 12 (!) different dithering methods, of
        which some can really be called an effect.

        I saw it first on the movie-banner for "The Trueman Show".
        A great picture was replaced by many, many smaller ones
        and if you stepped back one step you were seeing the original
        again. fxPAINT is the FIRST program on the AMIGA, that can
        create such effects. However, it would be quite memory-consuming,
        if all pictures were stored in full resolution in memory.
        fxPAINT`s special abilities make it possible to reduce the
        need for much memory and, at the same time store more pictures

        but fast and effective compression-method was created: RLE

        of 1-10 when saving in RLE-formats such as TARGA or IFF-RGB8.

          @{b}Answer:@{ub} A licence for the LZW-compression-method currently is
                  quite expensive, even if you only wanted to create a freeware
                  loader/saver. It is too expensive (beginning with 5000 US$) to
                  justify a support at this time. However, reading GIF is possible
                  via the GIF-datatype of AmigaOS 3.5 and reading LZW-TIFFs is
                  possible with the datatypes available on Aminet.

        @{b}Question:@{ub} fxPAINT crashes on my WarpUP-system.
          @{b}Answer:@{ub} There are some things you should pay attention to when
                  running fxPAINT under WarpUP:
                        1) Get the latest version of WarpUP installed (V4.0 or
                           later), older versions contain a bug that crash fxPAINT
                           when running under WarpUP.

                        2) Don`t use fxPAINT the way, that you first terminate
                           the ppc.library and then run fxPAINT. This simply won`t
                           work.

                        3) If you`re using ppc.library-Emulation by Frank Wille,
                           please use V0.6d or later, as otherwhise fxPAINT will
                           crash, as it can`t detect the emulation then and uses
                           a ppc.library-version which crashes, because the emulation
                           still isn`t a full implementation.

                        4) The fxWARP.library has to be in LIBS:

          @{b}Answer:@{ub} You`re most likely using MagicMenu. This hack doesn`t have a
                  proper implementation of the LendMenus()-command of intuition.library.

                  as if you would use the pulldown-menu) are still intact and working for
                  all windows - they have not been patched by MagicMenu. Maybe the author
                  of MagicMenu adds support for this command in his next version released.

            already had a look at the autodocs of CyberGraphX might have
            pointed out, that there are different functions for scaled and
            immediately rendered 24bit-data (ScalePixelArray) and for direct
            output without scaling (WritePixelArray). If you now believe,
            that scaling needs more time, you`re wrong - at least for the
            CV 64/3D. So if you check the "CGX Curiosity"-checkbox in the
            @{"Settings" link SETTINGS}, fxPAINT will use the scaling routine without scaling
            instead of the direct output. To get the best performance for
            your graphics-board, check, whether that curiosity exists for
            your board, too.

        · @{b}The GUI@{ub}
          > fxPAINT`s GUI is unique under the AMIGA`s programs. However,
            drawing such a GUI also needs a minimal amount of time. If you
            don`t need 24Bit-gradients, you can switch off "fxGUI-Effects"
            in the @{"Settings" link SETTINGS}.

        · @{b}The CPU(s)@{ub}
          > Optimize the PPC-Merge-Barrier. See @{"Settings" link SETTINGS}.
          > Install an optimized version for your 68K-CPU.
          > Make sure, two binaries are in fxPAINT`s subdirectory PPC,

          > Under WarpUP, fxPAINT is a little bit slower. This is not a
            disadvantage of WarpUP, which works at least as fast as the
            ppc.lib or even faster, but of vbcc, with which fxPAINT for
