Cloanto Amiga Forever Emulation Environment - Reference Introduction You are running an emulated Amiga with version 3.0 of the Amiga operating system, plus some of the latest patches and improvements which were available at the time of publication, and a lot of preinstalled extra software. If you launched the emulation with the preconfigured "3.0+" settings, this Amiga environment now features a CPU with a 68020 instruction set, a floating point unit (FPU), virtual memory (provided by Windows), TCP/IP (the Amiga shares an IP address with Windows) and a true color "uaegfx" display card with Picasso96 drivers. On slower systems, where the custom chips are not emulated in real time, different adjustments of the emulation settings may help run some games or other programs which require a lot of custom chip functionality. The performance of the emulation can be tuned by changing the priority of the CPU with respect to the Amiga custom chips. The emulation runs faster when a Picasso96 screen mode is selected, because in this case most of the graphics processing can be moved from the (emulated) Amiga custom chips to the Windows graphics hardware. To improve performance, the screen-refresh rate can be set to every second or third frame, instead of every frame. Disabling sound considerably improves performance, but a few programs do not work properly unless sound emulation is enabled, or sound output is disabled in said programs. A frequent question is "Why does the emulation emulate a 68020 instead of a 68060 CPU?", where the implied question is about the speed of the emulation. Changing the emulated CPU, for example from 68000 to 68010 or to 68020 does not affect the emulation speed, but only the instruction set and addressing modes supported by the CPU. The 68030, 68040 and 68060 CPUs were designed with 68020 instruction-set compatibility in mind, and there are practically no Amiga programs which do not run on either the 68000 or the 68020. Most Amiga programs run fine on the basic 68000 CPU, while a few are compiled for the 68020 instruction set. Version 3.0 of the Amiga OS for example requires a 68020 CPU. The speed of the emulated CPU, regardless of the selected CPU type, is determined only by the power of the PC's CPU(s). On a sufficiently powerful computer, the emulated "68020" CPU can be faster than a silicon-based 68060 CPU. Hard Disks Like on a "real" Amiga (the quotes are used to describe the silicon Amiga because Amiga Forever has been licensed by the Amiga companies as a fully real and official Amiga), the "System" volume contains Amiga system files, while "Work" is used to store application software and data files. The "System" and "Work" volumes are mapped to directories on the PC filing system, of which they mirror the exact contents (select the "Window/Show/All Files" Workbench menu to view files which do not have an Amiga icon file). After installation on a Windows system, these directories are usually located following a path like C:\Program Files\Cloanto\Amiga Forever\Emulation\shared\dir\System and C:\Program Files\Cloanto\Amiga Forever\Emulation\shared\dir\Work This means that the items contained in the "System" and "Work" directories appear as if they were contained in hard disks having the same name when viewed from within the emulation, but they can also be accessed from the Windows side. This is especially useful, for example, to copy software and data from a "real" Amiga to the emulation environment using the Amiga Explorer networking software, which is part of Amiga Forever. Preinstalled Software This version of Amiga Forever contains more than a dozen preinstalled software packages. Documentation for most programs is included in the "Software" directory on the "Work" partition. Just double-click on the "guide" or "txt" document in each subdirectory to view instructions. The basic system has been extended with several DataTypes, which are used automatically as necessary. The Amiga Shell features not only the new "KingCON" functionality (drag-and-drop, auto-completion, etc.), but also optional Unix-like shell commands (ls, cp, mv, rm, etc.) New Shell commands like CopyIcon and Print are also included, and so is an up-to-date version of the Amiga Installer. The boot procedure has been extended in such a way that any AmigaDOS script files which are placed inside "S:ExecuteAll" are automatically found and run when the system boots. This makes it possible to simply copy preconfigured software modules over the Amiga Forever configuration, without having to edit the "S:user-startup" file. Third parties can create components designed to be simply "unzipped" from the Windows side over the existing Amiga Forever installation, placing "Assign" and other commands in a module-specific script file to be copied inside "ExecuteAll". Floppy Disks Amiga Floppy disks cannot be read by standard PC hardware, and are therefore stored as disk images in "ADF" files. Amiga Explorer can create ADF files on the fly, so that existing Amiga floppy disks can easily be transferred to the PC. Many internet sites make ADF files containing old Amiga games available for download (with permission from the former publishers). Booting the emulated Amiga from an ADF disk is very easy: either select the ADF file and "insert" it in floppy drive 0 ("DF0") from the user interface of the emulation software before launching the emulated Amiga, or, if for example you are reading this now, use the shortcuts indicated below to display the user interface and select an ADF disk (on WinUAE, press F12), and then reboot the Amiga by pressing Ctrl+Left Amiga+Right Amiga (Ctrl+Left Windows+Right Windows, on a PC keyboard with "Windows" keys). Items Available from the ToolManager Dock The ToolManager dock, which by default is displayed on the Amiga Forever Workbench screen, gives quick access to the most frequently used programs. While the individual programs are described in more detail in the respective guides, the following is a short reference of the preinstalled selections. ReadMe.txt: displays this text. PPaint: opens Personal Paint. If Personal Paint is already running it is brought to the front, otherwise it is launched. Image and animation files can be dragged-and-dropped onto the "PPaint" button. TurboText: opens a new TurboText editing window. Drag-and-drop is supported. TurboText is very useful to edit the system startup files, but it can also be used for professional programming tasks, and even as a binary editor. MultiView: opens a new instance of the system MultiView viewer, which is capable of displaying or playing any type of multimedia object supported by the system DataTypes, including AmigaGuide, text, graphics and sound. This button is very useful to view graphics files without running the full Personal Paint, to drag-and-drop AmigaGuide files which have no icon, or in general to use MultiView as the viewer instead of another program which may be set as the Default Tool in a data file. If no object is dragged onto the button, a file requester is opened to select a file. Shell: opens an Amiga Shell window. LhA->RAM: LhA and LZH archives dropped onto this button (and not on the window which opens after clicking on the button) are automatically extracted to the "LhA" directory in RAM. DirDiff: runs DirDiff, which is a powerful tool to scan, compare, synchronize and replicate files. ScreenMode: opens the Amiga Screen Mode Preferences, from where a screen mode can be selected for the Workbench screen. Picasso96 screens ("uaegfx") allow for palette modes with up to 256 colors, as well as different true color resolutions. Use Ctrl+Tab to reopen the ToolManager window, which closes automatically to allow the system to reset the Workbench screen. Clown.pic: uses MultiView to open a 256-color image of a clown. This is very useful to test the settings of a new Workbench color depth (e.g. a 256-color or and true-color Picasso96 mode) set with ScreenMode. MultiView remaps the image as necessary, depending on the number of available colors. Input: opens the System Input Preferences, which are necessary to set the Amiga keyboard layout, among other things. Exchange: launches the Amiga Commodities Exchange program (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+F1), which gives access to the controls of different system "commodities", many of which are preinstalled in Amiga Forever. ToolManager: runs the user interface from where the ToolManager dock itself can be customized. The keyboard shortcut to hide or display the Amiga Forever ToolManager dock is Ctrl+Tab. AExplorer: starts or stops the Amiga (server) side of the Amiga Explorer networking software. This is useful if the emulation is running with TCP/IP enabled, in which case the client side of Amiga Explorer can run under Windows, from where it becomes possible to access all the resources of the Amiga emulation, including RAM and the contents of ADF and HDF disk image files. If the Windows side of Amiga Explorer ("Amiga Computer" icon on the Desktop) is not installed, the Amiga Forever setup can be run again to install only Amiga Explorer. WARNING: through TCP/IP, Amiga Explorer can be accessed from other computers, potentially giving access to all the files which are accessible to the Amiga emulation. If the computer running the emulation is connected to a network (e.g. the internet), you may want to change the default password on both the Amiga and the PC side of Amiga Explorer before selecting this button. We advise to select a long password containing both letters and numbers, and to not select the same password for Amiga Explorer as another password already in use on the system. The password needs to be set only once. UAE-Control: runs UAE-Control, which is an Amiga user interface to certain emulation settings which can be changed at run time. To exit the emulation, select Quit (this is equivalent to switching off the Amiga). To close UAE-Control, click on the gadget on the top left of the window. On WinUAE, press F12 for a more complete settings window. Amiga OS and Software Keyboard Shortcuts Within Amiga Forever, the original keyboard shortcuts of the Amiga operating system and applications are preserved unchanged (emulation-specific shortcuts are mentioned in the following sections). Amiga Forever includes numerous enhancements to the default Amiga OS configuration. The following is a list of the shortcuts which may be less familiar to users of a "vanilla" Amiga OS configuration. Ctrl+Double-Click: hold down Ctrl and double-click on any part of a window to bring that window to the front (this is handled by the ClickToFront system commodity). Ctrl+Alt+F1: opens the Commodities Exchange window, from where all running commodities can be configured. Ctrl+Tab: displays/hides the ToolManager dock window. This is useful to hide ToolManager, to bring it to the front, or to re-open it after the system has closed the dock window following a change of screen mode. Shift+Cursor Up/Cursor Down: in a Shell window, these keys can be used to quickly select those lines from the command history which match the part of text which has just been typed. Tab: in a Shell window, Tab activates auto-completion of the current path and file name. Note: the emulation software has an option to use the keyboard to emulate one or more Amiga joysticks. When this option is active, the corresponding keys do not generate Amiga keyboard events, and therefore appear to be "dead". This can be corrected by disabling the specific joystick option. Windows Keyboard Shortcuts The standard Windows shortcuts can be used to cycle and quit applications: press Alt+Tab to cycle from one program to the other (hold the Alt key down, and repeatedly press Tab to select a program, and release the Alt key to activate the selected program); Alt+F4 will terminate the emulation session.
