Email netiquette
based on the translation of
Christian Reiser <C.Reiser@ieee.org>
writing it messages briefly and concisely.
Concentrate on a topic per message and add yourselves you a meaningful
concern, so that messages can be easily regained. Add a signature to
the end of messages. This signature should contain names and E-Mail
address and not be longer than five lines. Often the signature
contains also the postal address, telephone numbers, URL of the own
Web page and referring to the use of PGP writing you only then in
block letters, if you want particularly to emphasize one point, or in
the heading. * Asterisks * (interpreted by YAM as fat writing) are
suitable also, in order to emphasize words. Block letters outside of
headings are interpreted general as CRIES. Adjust YAM in such a way
the fact that the line length is below 80 characters and does not use
you control characters. Do not use umlauts, if you are not safe that
them interpret the software of the recipient correct. It is regarded
as extremely impolite to pass personal messages on without the
agreement of the sender at mailing lists. Abbreviations can be used,
however messages are also illegible to many abbreviations. Here a few
examples from the English: By the way IMHO (into my humble opinion)
of my modest opinion after BTW (by the way) FYI (For Your Information)
to your information AFAIK (as far as I know) so far I knows ASAP (as
soon as possible) as soon as possible cu (lake you) to late using you
that; -) Smily, in order to indicate ironical remarks as such,
otherwise can understand it the recipient easily falsely. They are
tolerant in relation to lack of a partner, e.g. concerning
orthography, grammar, printout or Mail habits. Do not rub it errors
under the nose. If you announce yourselves at a mailing list, observe
the message some time, in order a feeling for it to gotten, which
questions are asked and which into the group not to fit. Look at
yourselves the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions, a list of the usually
asked questions with responses). It is unpleasant for the users of a
group, if the same questions are asked again and again. If someone
postet a message, which does not belong into the mailing list, then
you answer private and not into the list. If you quote other message,
then you cut everything out, which not necessarily is necessary for
the response. Nobody would like to read a quoted message for the
third or fourth time, particularly if then under it " only, I mean "
also am. Resist the temptation, directly in the mailing list to
Fleming to send (insulting or reprimanding message). Consider, the
list are public and for constructional exchange of views meant. Treat
the others, as you would like to be treated by them. If you answer to
a message in a mailing list, check the address (person directly or
list). It can be very unpleasant, if a response, which is addressed
to a certain person, in the mailing list appears.
