Release date - 28/6/9T6 @END_FILE_ID.DIZ HaVoK Press release #3 24/6/1996 .------------------------. | Online Internet Access | `------------------------' Well by now I'm sure that most of you have heard of the new service that Havok will be offering, but if not, heres a quick reminder! -[ bACKGRoUND ]-------------------------------------- ---- --- - A little while ago I decided that it was time to make Havok offer something new and different to the bbs scene. And with all the hype about the Internet, I thought that would be a good way to go. Looking at the current methods of Internet connection, they are either too expensive, eg using a normal Net Provider which costs about £150 a year, or just slow and badly implemented. So the Havok Net team have come up with something new! For only £25 a year, or £15 for 6 months, you can subscribe to the Internet! The net access offered will be full and unrestricted, offering the following services: FTP, IRC, TELNET, WWW Page request, Archie, Gopher, Email. Most of you probably already know what those are, but if not, here's a quick rundown: FTP: Like a huge BBS. Aminet alone has gigs of s/w, with the latest files uploaded daily. No ratios on FTP so you can download as much as you want! And files are often available on Aminet & FTP before they appear on the BBS scene! IRC: Internet Relay Chat. If you have a problem you want a solution to, or just want a chat, then IRC is the place. With over 1500 "channels" of chat and triple that in users, you are garanteed of an answer! TELNET: Call BBS's abroad often, but can't afford the phone bill? Then Telnet is for you. Any BBS that offers telnet access will be available to you for the cost of the call to HaVoK, wether it's in Germany or Australia! WWW Page Request: The World Wide Web is like a huge encyclopaedia of every subject imaginable. Just place a request for pages of a certain subject, or a certain page itself, and it will be made available to you! ARCHIE & GOPHER: The Net is a big place, and tracking down the information you want could take hours, so use one of these search engines to seek out the info for you! EMAIL: With Email, you can mail text files & binaries to anyone in the world with an email address! -[ iMPLEMENTATiON ]-------------------------------------- ---- --- - A lot of you have probably already used the Net in some form on a BBS, and not thought much of it. Well HaVoK Internet will put an end to all those pages of plain ascii text and waiting around for files to FTP! With online multitasking, no matter what machine you own, you will be able to search or FTP in the background while using the BBS as normal! Now probably you are all wondering how the hell that is going to work. Well HaVoK works on a different system to all other BBS's. HaVoK runs on 2 Amiga 1200's, one dedicated to interfacing with the Net, and the other running the BBS. So at any one time, only one machine is doing one "job" at a time. This allows for faster Net connections and faster BBS execution. This also allows for Dual time Multitasking. "What?" you say. Read on... -[ fTP ]------------------------------------------------- ---- --- - If you have ever tried to FTP on Metnet, you will have noticed that you tend to get rather large phone bills while waiting for the connection to the FTP site, then waiting for it to download to Metnet, then waiting for Metnet to send it to you. HaVoK Net puts an end to all that! And I'm sure you are all really annoyed with the endless ascii screens full of files. No More! HaVoK will display the files, plus a 1 line description in a nice, user friendly display, much like the directory listers used on the board at the moment. A new command has been added to the FTP shell, allowing you to tag files without GETting them. Once you have tagged the files you want, you are then able to exit back to the menu of the FTP door, where you are given a choice to either remove the files from the taglist, forget the files for now, or download them. When you choose download, instead of a %-meter appearing, you are put back onto the BBS. You are then able to use the BBS as normal, including Uploading, Downloading, Messaging and Emailing, or even Logging off. Once your files have been received from the net, you will be online-messaged and asked to pick them up, or, if you have logged off, they will be placed in your personal HOLD directory and a message will be sent to you informing you that they are there. HaVoK is even cheaper to call than the Net is normally, plus no more waiting around for downloads! -[ iRC ]------------------------------------------------ ---- --- - IRC is the real time chat area of the Net. Simple to use, and a great laugh, it really is one of the best features of the Net. It will be displayed much like a GUI IRC program, with an ansi window for the chat screen, your input line and a list of all the users on the channel. -[ tELNET ]--------------------------------------------- ---- --- - Telnet is the BBS part of the Net. You are able to telnet to any part of the Net, including IRC, Archie and FTP, as well as many international BBS's that offer a telnet port. When you use Telnet, you are literally using another persons machine, and as such there is not a great deal that can be done about the interface. -[ wWW pAGE rEQUEST ]----------------------------------- ---- --- - Your first question is probably "Why no WWW access?". And there is a simple answer. Trying to emulate 256 colour graphics and GUI on an 8 colour ansi screen is plain futile. So instead, you will be able to request WWW Pages, and they will be downloaded and sent to you to be viewed in a normal Web Browser. -[ aRCHiE & GoPHER ]------------------------------------ ---- --- - These 2 search engines will be implemented much like the FTP door. You will enter a search topic, and then be placed back on the BBS. The result of the search will be mailed to you once completed. -[ eMAiL ]---------------------------------------------- ---- --- - The email door will be run in 2 different ways. For Susbcribers, they will be able to compose a message online, or upload one already written, and then send it. The Mail will be sent instantly, unlike other systems, and will arrive at the destination server in the shortest time possible. For non-subscribers, they will be able to compose mail online, or upload it, but the mail will not be sent until the next polling time, which could be up to 24 hours away. Non subscribers will be limited to one mail box each, subscribers may have up to 5. -[ sOUNDS gOOD, hOW mUCH aGAIN? ]----------------------- ---- --- - To susbcribe for one year costs only £25, or for a 6 month subscription, £15. The Net will be available at all cheap rate times, unlike other Net offering BBS systems, and you will be given access to the subscribers conference. Your subscription covers any cost that may be added on to the subscription during the course of the subscription, and any support disks or text files mailed to you.
