Niki Lauda Schumacher Backs Hill For Title. Michael Schumacher has become the latest member of the F1 world to back Damon Hill for the Drivers championship this year. "I would have to win six of the remaining races to be in with a chance" something which the German admitted was unlikely. Frank Williams has stressed that Williams will not be relaxing and Hill added that he was looking for wins in France, Britain and Germany to ensure he wins the title. Katayama Ban (Suspended) Katayama's Kamikaze move on Rosset during the Canadian GP has earned him a suspended one race ban for driving 'without due care and attention'. Katayama insists that Rosset "closed the door on him" !!?? Qualifying Tyres Banned Next year teams will not be able to use qualifying tyres, nor will the rumoured dual compound tyre be legal. The ban comes into effect from January 1997. New Renault For France The next version of the RS8B will be available for the French GP. Renault will also be announcing their motorsport plans at the French GP. It is expected that they will announce their withdrawal from F1. One twist is that they may announce continued support and engine supply for the Williams team. New Minardi Driver For Germany Minardi may replace Fisichella for the last six races if his sponsorship deal fails to come off. The replacement will be Giovanni Lavaggi formerly of Pacific Racing F1. Giancarlo Minardi is keen to keep Fisichella who "has so much talent" as well as fellow new kid Tarso Marques for 1997. Austria Tipped For GP Next Year. The rumours continue to contradict each other, but then that is half the fun :-). This week it looks like Austria is the favourite to replace the Hungarian GP with the Nurburgring staging yet another European GP, though it may be labelled the 'Luxembourg' GP. China looks on course for a GP in 1998. Qualifying Engines, Ban Rejected. Qualifying tyres may be out, but qualifying engines are here to stay (for the moment at least). Qualifying engines usually evolve into race engines when reliability is satisfied. Schumacher / Jordan Dispute Over The long running Schumacher / Jordan legal dispute looks set to be settled out of court. It centres on Schumacher signing for Jordan in 1991, then moving to Benetton after just one race. The two sides are keen to settle out of court to avoid publicity (oops) and it is expected that Jordan will relieve 100,000 UKP. Alesi Tests Driver Head Protection Unwittingly, Jean Alesi tested the new driver head protection when his Benetton went sideways into a tyre wall at around 60 mph. Alesi's head could be seen to be hit by a flying tyre. He said "I felt awful the morning after the crash....the side protection is very, very good because I didn't have any head or neck pain." Canada Review Williams, Benetton, McLaren and Jordan will probably look back at Canada with a sense of achievement. Ferrari will be staring, wondering how come it all went so wrong. Ferrari's bad luck started on the parade lap when Schumacher's car failed to get away. This was followed by Irvine retiring with broken suspension and Schumacher's eventual retirement with a broken drive shaft. In another race where few cars finished Williams showed their class by dominating. Hill's two stop strategy paid off and he won for the fifth time this year. Martin Brundle had his best race of the year Canada Results Pos. Niki Lauda Few drivers win the World championship, very few win it more than once and only seven have won it on three or more occasions. Niki Lauda is one of those rare people. His Formula1 career started in 1971 when he raced in his home GP at the Osterreichring in a March. He retired due to poor handling. His first real season was with March in 1972, Niki paid to drive and was in deep debt. 1973 saw him paying BRM to drive, this time however he scored his first points when he finished 5th in Belgium. His performance in overshadowing his team mates meant he was offered a three year deal with BRM. He could pay off his debts and race for himself. Ferrari wanted Niki in 1974, and somehow he managed to get out of his contract with BRM and join them. This was the start of his real racing career, he won in Spain and Holland and scored enough points to finish fourth in the title race. He may have finished higher if he hadn't retired from the last five races. The form he showed in 1974, came to fruition in 1975. Wins in Monaco, Belgium, Sweden, France and the US were enough for him to take the title by nearly 20 points. 1976 looked set to be another Championship year, wins in Brazil, South Africa, Belgium, Monaco and Britain along with podium finishes in the US, Spain and Sweden meant that Niki looked set to retain his title. However an horrific accident at the Nürburgring saw him badly burned and he missed the Austrian and Dutch GPs. He returned at Italy where he came fourth. The final race in Japan was run in appalling conditions, and Niki retired, this left James Hunt needing to finish third or better to take the title. Hunt managed his task and Niki missed out on a second title by 1 point. Not bad for a driver that was nearly killed! Niki continued his impressive form in 1977 when he regained his title. He only won three times that year but he managed seven other podium finishes and two other points finishes. Consistency saw him win the title by a seventeen point margin. In 1978 Niki left Ferrari and went to join the Parmalat sponsored Brabham team, he won in Sweden (in the famous "Fan Car") and Italy; he managed five other podium finishes, but retirements in all the other races meant that he could only finish fourth in the championship. He stayed with Brabham in 1979 and had his worst season, apart from sixth in South Africa and fourth in Italy he retired from every other race. Niki retired from Formula1 at the end of that season. He built up his airline business while he was away and in 1982 he returned to Formula1 with the McLaren team. Two wins in 1982 showed that the speed was still there. 1983 was another year dogged by retirements, but McLaren introduced their TAG turbo at the end of that year. 1984 saw Niki back on form, the McLaren MP4/2 was a good car (John Barnard designed it), the TAG V6 turbo was a good engine and Niki was a good driver, the three elements jelled well and five wins, four seconds and other points finishes were enough for him to take his third world title, albeit by 0.5 points from his team mate Alain Prost who had won seven races that year. 1985 saw Niki win just once, in Holland, two other points scores were drowned out by 11 retirements and 1 dns. Alain Prost won the title, Niki finished 10th and he retired again, this time for good. Niki managed 25 wins (29 other podium finishes), 24 poles and 25 fastest laps from 171 starts putting him in the top five in each category. He was one of the truly great drivers, and now manages his airline business. He still had links with Ferrari up until last year, as a consultant.
