CTW can reveal that it is now all systems go for the new team handling the former Commodore machines's return. Amiga Technologies, the company formed by German firm Escom after purchasing all the rights to the technology and brand, has set up a UK subsidiary in Maidenhead. Jonathan Anderson, erstwhile Amiga product manager at Commodore UK, has been appointed general manager. He is working alongside five other former Commodre staff, including sales manager John Smith and National accounts manager Bob Burridge. A 68020 Based Amiga 1200, with an upgraded operating system (OS 3.1), will be rolled out to retail from the end of September, backed by specialist and National press advertising. Distribution is yet to be officially hammered out, but is likely to consist of longtime Amiga and Commodore wholer SDL plus one other Pre-Christmas, with a further appointment likely in the new year. A maximum of 60,000 Amiga 1200's have been allocated to the UK and such has been the trade enthusiasm at the machines return, Amiga Technologies is confident they will all have been sold-in within the next couple of weeks. Discussions with multiples have just begun, but it looks likely that only a couple of the major stores will be appointed, with the specialist sector playing a key role. "The Majority of stock will be going through the independant trade," Smith told CTW. "The multiplies who come on-board will ofcourse be very important, but the smaller stores have supported us for a very long time and 60,000 units is really not a lot of stock compared to what has been achived in the past. The responce from all sectors of the trade have been superb." At £399 the Amiga 1200 will actually returning to the high street at £50 more than it left it. Amiga Technologies attributes this to a number of factors, not least the increased cost of DRAM and casings, plus higher costs for rushed manufacturing. With PC's still generally costing over twice the price of a new Amiga, confidence is high that it still has a very important place as the UK's most popular entry level computer. Integeral to the relaunch will be a high value software bundle, featuring a mixture of games and general home computing titles such as the acclaimed Scala MM300. "The Amiga is much more than just a games machine, so the new pack will very much carry on where we left off with the very last Commodore bundles, which included a wide mixture of software," Added Smith. Amiga Technologies will also be introducing high end Amiga 4000 systems before the year is out, and promises to provide " Some Surprises" with the launch of other new products, or even old ones revamped (eg C64 !!), pre Christmas.
