Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mister X David Hughes investigates Chris Carter, the man behind THE X-FILES I don't know why, but I always imagined Chris Carter - then man behind the Fox Network's smash hit unexplained phenomena series "The X-Files" - would be a bit of a, well, nerd. Perhaps it was because Mulder, the show's leading man, displays so many of the obsessive tendancies more commonly associated with, say, the typical Star Trek fan. Possibly because you would need more than a working knowledge of science fiction, horror and conspiracy theories to put together a show like "The X-Files". Or maybe because, in this post-Tarantino era of film-fanboys-turned-acclaimed-auteurs, only someone whose closet was no stranger to the rustle of anoraks, could produce, write and direct a series as startlingly original and spectacularly successful as Carter's - and then log onto the Internet to discuss it with fans. It therefore comes as something as a surprise to learn that, far from being a fanboy of any kind, Chris Carter is (physically at least) more surf dude than computer nerd. David Duchovny, who plays moody Mulder to Gillian Anderson's sultry Scully, describes him as "very California - handsome, bluse eyes, long blond surfer hair, tan, athletic... a little like Vitas Gerulaitis, or the porn star Randy West." Carter, for his part, admits that "The X-Files" is not the culmination of a lifelong dream to tell the world wierd tales about government conspiracies and alien abductions, but rather a simple, healthy desire to tell "good, smart stories rooted in a spectulative science." In other words: "To do the scariest, smartest show posible." Chris Carter, now 38, worked as a freelance journalist before joining Disney as a screenwriter in 1985. His second screenplay attracted the attention of his boss, Jeffrey Katzenberg who gave Carter the opportunity to write and produce several made-for-television movies, a pilot (cameo By Night), and a Disney Channel sitsom called "The Nanny". Having co-produced the second series of hit comedy show "Rags to Riches", Carter approached the Fox Network with his idea for a show to follow in the "wired tv" tradition of "The Twilight Zone", "The Outer Limits" and, more recently, "Twin Peaks" (In which David Duchovny appeared as cross-dressing detective Dennis/Denise). "I was a big fan of Kolchak:The Night Stalker," Carter says, refferring to the classic mid-seventies horror show starring Darren McGavin. "It's something no-one has ever tried to do again. So I came up with what I felt was a show in the vein of The Night Stalker, but without the built-in problems - we couldn't do monster-of-the-week or vampire-of-the-week." Fox liked the pilot, ordered twenty-four hour-long episodes, and had notched up impressive ratings and an award or two. By the time the second series began last September, "X-Philes" - as fans of the show prefered to be called - had helped Fox to its beggest hit show since "The Simpsons", a Golden Globe award for Best Television Drama and one of the networks highest ratings ever. Not bad for a show which might, at first glance, be mistaken for a glossy American update of "Sapphire and Steel". Carter himself credits the show's incredible success to audiences' increasing open-mindedness as far as the paranormal is concerned - and growing suspicion that the government is involved in cover-ups and conspiracies. He even suspects - not entirely joking - that the FBI might have file on him, even if, as the Bureau claims, nothing like the X-Files has existed since the closure of the US Defence Department's UFO investigation project, Blue Book (which was itself once itself once the subject of paranoic, paranormal tv series of that name, not unlike Carter's show). Indeed, the only curious phenomenom Carter encountered while on a guided tour of the FBI offices in Washington, DC and Quantico, Virginia were autograph-hunting agents. "It was great," he remembers, "a kind of dream come true for me." As a regular writer for "The X-Files", Carter admits that finding others who can fulfill the show's script needs can be hard, a task not helped by the departure of two of his fellow writer-producers, fan favourites James Wong and Glen Morgan, who have left to write their own pilot for Fox, entitled "Space". "The other writers and producers, who have been such a huge part of The X-Files success, just know instinctually what would make a good X-File and what wouldn't. You can't ever go too far, but you've got to got farther than just far enough." He says that the opposing belief systems of the leading charactors allow them, and therefore the stories, to make "believable leaps forward on sometimes rather unbelievable terrain." So whose belief system - open-minded Mulder's or sceptical Scully's - does Carter subscribe to? "It's hard for me to say", he considers. "I'm a natural sceptic, so I write from the Scully point of view in that sense. But like a lot of people, I want a religious experience. I want to see something that makes me believe, and that is what Mulder is looking for. So I am a combination of both." But Carter's scepticism, like Scully's, is waning as "The X-Files" - already assured of a third season - continue. "I don't know how I feel about [the paranormal] now. Too many otherwise sane and credible people have told me their experiences and I have very little reason to doubt them."
