Falk is not very liked by the king because of his arrogance, nothing, however, has been done so far. It is widely rumoured that he blackmailed the other area for an unknown reason from the Bishop of Wells. Falk's arrogance extends also to the other barons in the area: very heavy road tolls, night raids to villages, kidnappings etc. His removal is hampered only by his good relations to the Earl of Glouchester and Prince John. The Bishop of Exeter: Humbrey de Mortain. A slack person, enjoying only amusements in Frech courts. Rarely seen in Exeter, except to collect his revenue. His vast estates are divided into numerous manors all over Devon. The Bishop of Wells: Gregorius Laval. Occupied with strange mysticism and ancient tales. Cares not for money nor power, yet does not hesitate to use them for his 'hobbies'. An open supporter of the Knights Templars; often seen in the company of; has given vast estates to the order in Somerset. His closest assistant is the Priest of Bridgewater, his cousin Thomas Laval. Wigan (in central Devon) Owned by the Berkley family since the he conquest in 1066, having Richard as its current head. For the last 15 years Richard and two of his oldest sons have been fighting in France for Henry the king. Richard's estates are taken care of by Brady of Tonbridge, Richard's steward. The Sheriff of Devon: Theobald Courtenay. Has little power over the barons in the county. He is satisfied with taking profit from his own estates and does Sheriff's duty occasionally. Theobald received the office in 1185 due to the rebellious Roger Carbique's plot to support Richard against his father Henry the king. Roger's castle was devastated in the incident: Theobald has to contend with a simple bailey and motte - of wood - in Okehampton. Theobald's cousin is the Baron of Tiverton: Savaric Courtenay. De Clare. An isolated manor (south of Tiverton) of the Clare family is managed by a Saxon noble Brian Tarrant - of the famous Tarrant family. Brian makes a good profit and is currenty building a castle of his own. Representatives of the Clare family are hardly ever in this manor. Northam. A barony south of Barnstaple. Owned by the Carew family since times immemorial, an old Saxon family who claim to decend from King Arthur himself, certainly native to Devon. Now led by Owen Carew: married to Joie Laval, a sister of Thomas Laval, the priest of Bridgewater. Owen and Joie have 6 sons and 4 daughters, all between 3 and 20. Northam's incomes consist mainly of land rents, cultivation and tin mines, fishing and salt industry bringing some additional profit. The Carew family ownes a castle in Northam overlooking the Bay and the Town of Northam below. Currently the town lacks protective walls, yet they will be constructed in near future. In addition, an elaborate tower is under construction in Staventon, in th Easternmost part of Northam Barony. Northam's tenant are mainly of Saxon blood, those of Winkleigh, Staventon and Tighany being the most notable. The forest area in the Taw valley is given to a Cistercian priory, 30 monks inhabiting it. The priory was established by Claivaux in France.
