Here's a little ImageFX ARexx script I use for creating icons from my images.
To utilize it to the fullest, you need:

1. ImageFX 1.50 or higher
2. ReqTools and RexxReqTools (from aminet:util/libs/ReqTools22b_U.lha)
3. NewTool 2.6 or higher (from aminet:util/wb/NewTool26.lha)
4. Some pictures :-)

You can select as many files as you like from a file requester.  The program
then lets you set some options, and creates all the icons without further
user intervention.  The image viewing program of your choice is added as the
image's "Default Tool".

As an example, I've included a grab of part of my Workbench screen.


Significant new features in this version:

* Can use any pixel aspect ratio information present in the image
* Can create black-and-white icons from colour pictures, if desired
* Maximum and Step size can be set in GUI
