When this appears, the left mouse button advances the text, the right mouse button allows you to reverse and the Escape button on your Amiga will quit you back to the main guide. The Med User Group name will probably alter to OUG ( OctaMED User Group ), after the release of the PC version. The group is run by a team of amateur OctaMED users who devote a lot of their spare time to inform members all over the world of new developments in the program, offer them technical support and give them a forum for both their creativity and opinions. The group produces a disk magazine entitled `TI' approximately six times a year. TI always contains the latest news about OctaMED as well as modules sent in by members, samples, features, problems and a section where members can send their creations with OctaMED for a complete and un-biased review. To this end, we strongly encourage everyone to send in their finished modules for review and inclusion on the group's disks releases. MUG Membership entitles you to six copies of TI (the one you are looking at now being your first). Your next five issues will be sent to you as soon as they are released. After your final issue has been sent, we ask you to re-new your membership to the group. As we are the official user group for OctaMED, we are always the first to hear about news and developements regarding the program. These are always published in TI way before any of the Amiga mags get hold of them... As well as producing TI, the official MED Users Group has a strong tradition of issueing quality disks into the Public Domain. These include the very popular `Friends Of Paula' compilations and the `NoSampler?' utility disks. The group is a completely non-profit organization and simply exists for the benefit of OctaMED users around the globe. After talking over the idea with Ray Burt-Frost of @{"RBF Software" link RBFSoftware} (who hold copyright to the OctaMED program) the group was launched in March 1993 and consisted of a dozen or so OctaMED enthusiasts communicating through the mail, swapping songs, ideas, and often, rather rude and disguisting jokes... In April of that year, Richard decided to compile a disk magazine for the group and with the help of @{"Chris Wright" link ChrisWright} (infamous for his `Friends Of Paula' disks), he produced the first issue of @{" TI " link TI} which celebrated three years of publication in May 1996. "The idea behind TI" said Richard in July '93 "was that it was a direct rebellion against some other Amiga disk magazines which were all rather boring and straight laced about things. TI tries to be a fun sort of experience which also tries to be informative. Whereas most specialist magazines will publish articles that go completely over a lot of heads, TI looks at everything from the angle of a good read so is quite easy to get into whether you're a beginner in the world of OctaMED or a seasoned pro...". TI is now a much older and wiser publication and contains a wide variety of news, reviews, articles and tutorials as well as some of the best OctaMED modules available anywhere and usually exclusive news on the development of the program. Ever since the first issue of TI, the group has steadily increased its membership (which now runs in hundreds) with OctaMED users ranging from Daytona to Dudley and has become a respected movement in the Amiga music industry. After taking time out to produce a public domain disk of his own songs "Barney - Warts`n'All" (see @{" Music disks released by MUG " Link Collection} for more details), Richard radically re-designed TI's image when TI4 was released in November 1993. "It looks quite professional now" he said just after it's release "It's quite a shame really, because I liked the way it looked as if it was produced in my back room in my spare time....". The fact that Richard still produces TI in his back room in his spare time was not mentioned..... The magazine has also spawned the `NoSampler' PD disks compiled by article writer @{" Mike Richmond " link MikeRichmond} and also helped to bolster the works of Dave Sullivan and Steven Gane into the forefront of Amiga music PD. Other people who regularly write for TI include @{" Kevan Craft " link KevanCraft} who in 1995, (along with his brother, Gareth) released `a drop in the ocean', a compact disc of Amiga musical material... With the appearance of TI5 in January of 1994, TI became licenseware. "It was the end of an era" said Richard recently, "I loved the fact that people could get TI all over the world for a couple of quid but running a user group does cost an incredible ammount of money and I could simply no longer afford to pay for everything myself..." The group's next big change came in January 1995 with the introduction of new membership policies which basically meant all OctaMED users could access the group more easily and get copies of TI much, much cheaper than before - this new membership scheme also saw the start of MUG's now famous @{" special member offers " link MUGClubBenefits}. The group tries to get the best offers possible for its members and details of the latest offers and services for its' members are featured on this very disk. The group really is ruthless when getting deals for the group... In 1996, MUG teamed up with RBF Software to offer all purchasers of the new OctaMED Soundstudio free MUG membership for one year which introduced thousands of new OctaMED users to MUG. This was also the year where TI gained a whole load of new editors which meant responsibility for the magazine was shared out rather than on Richard's (already rather weighted down) shoulders. What's for the future for MUG/TI? Well, OctaMED Soundstudio is now on general release and with OctaMED on PC looking closer and closer they'll be plenty to keep us busy. TI looks like it is set to improve throughout '96 and hopefully every member of the group will use the services provided to their full advantage and also, try out at least a few of the products we've released or will be releasing. Remember, MUG and TI are there for anyone who wants to have a good time using OctaMED. TI is compiled by people who hopefully know what they are talking about but aren't at all pretentious about what they do and aren't afraid to have a laugh about it. Please note that ModSpot is NOT INTERESTED in receiving any random, `unsolicited' PD modules for review, Modspot is a section of TI specifically aimed at COMPOSERS. Modspot reviews are split into two categories:- 1) Original Compositions 2) Cover Versions We feel that there are entirely different skills/talents involved in both styles, therefore, to judge them on the same plain would be totally unfair. With ORIGINAL Compositions we take more notice of the tune, song arrangement etc. rather than the technical use of OctaMED, whereas, in Cover Versions, the exact opposite will apply. At the end of each review each module receives a mark from 0% - 100% * These marks serve two purposes:- FIRSTLY (and most obviously) they will set a standard for you (the reader) to try and attain. For instance; if `Tommy Bloggs' consistantly gets high marks for his modules, then his reputation will grow and readers will start requesting his mods from our library. Readers who receive high marks in ModSpot frequently find their modules featured on MUG disks. SECONDLY, any mods that attain a mark of 8O%+ (no easy task) will qualify as a `Modspot Hotshot' (tacky aren't we!) these mods, as well as being available individually from our library, will also feature in Hotshot compilations (which we are still to compile!) The idea of this is to highlight the cream of the crop from, and to, all our readers. We also have a special section in Modspot called the `Grim Bin'. In here we deposit any modules that receive a mark of 3O% or under, and these will also be compiled and released intermittently. (Confidence boosters for beginners?) The World Wide Web is an extension of the Internet, which I am sure you have all heard of by now! The WWW allows text and pictures to be displayed on your screen, as well as links to other pages (or sites) and downloadable files. WWW pages are put together using a programming system known as HTML. This language uses a system of embedded codes to set up the various text and picture elements on screen. The technicalities are not important however, all you need to know is that it works! There are literally thousands of WWW sites worldwide, with lots of major companies having there own areas. For example, Sony have a site advertising all there music releases, and Future Publishing have a site called FutureNet, where information about all their magazines is available. The main advantage of the WWW is that it is extremely friendly. It can be thought of as a large interactive magazine, with pictures, text, all presented clearly. The WWW is actually as good as the hype. To access the page, you will need a Web Browser. The easiest way to do this is to use a PC computer which has an excellent browser called Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE).If you want to stick with your Amiga, you will need a program known as AMosaic, and a pretty hefty amiga. I would imagine you are going to need about 4 meg, and at least a 68020, though I am not sure. Your best bet would be to read up in magazines on how to get connected. You`ll also need a modem of course, and some form of Internet access. There's nothing revolutionary there you might say but it's just a convenient way for Internet users to get up-to-date information about OctaMED (new revisions, availability, prices), as well as introduce new users to OctaMED and MUG. The subjects currently covered in these pages include a brief history of MED and OctaMED (including a picture of MED 1.0 which was never released... details on the latest OctaMED developments, F.A.Q.s (Frequently Asked Questions) about OctaMED with the option of adding new questions and also all the information you could possibly want about MUG plus all the relevant contact addresses. Naturally, you need an Internet connection to access the pages. How to connect to the Internet is beyond the scope of this text. Any Web browser on any platform should work (i.e. AMosaic on the Amiga, Mosaic or Netscape on other platforms). Wonder no longer. MUG has invested in the latest synthesizer technology to bring you a service that has never been attempted before. Basically, you send us your modules and we'll re-construct them using the lastest MIDI technology. There are limitations, we can only use the sounds we've got in the synth, but there are 6OO of these to chose from. This means vocal samples and anything totally weird we won't be able to cope with but if your module(s) contain them, we'll just adapt them the best we can. What you will be getting is a MIDI interpretation of your module, a reconstructed song which uses your module as its basis. How closely we stick to your original depends on its nature. Because of the huge cost of the technology involved in providing this service and the time it takes to individually adapt modules there is a charge of £5 UK POUNDS per module adapted. Each module is given individual attention and recreating modules in MIDI can be a pain-staking and time consuming process. For this reason, please allow six weeks for the work on your module to be completed. We do reserve the right to decline to adapt modules.
