If you find that it does not work properly with later versions of these products, either acquire these earlier versions or check with us for the most recent version of PIK which will probably have been updated to work with the new versions. The authors of these products may change command line syntax in later versions, making the commands used by PIK ineffective. While this is not likely to happen, we have no control over it! PART 0.0 CHANGES FROM 1.20 NEW REGISTRATION BENEFITS! When you register PIK, you will receive the registered version which supports the creation of ARJ and self-extract ARJ files! Also, by specifying the full filename with extension, you can specify whether to create a self-extract file or not without having to answer yes or no to do so. In addition, self-extract files may be created in other than the current directory with registered version 2.10, and it will not be necessary to have the file PIK.DOC in the same directory as PIK to keep the shareware screen from displaying. In addition to the registered version of PIK, you will receive what, many have called the best file and hard disk management system around. The file manager which has long been a part of the SPELLBOUND! Director Menu and File Management program is now a standalone system. If you like PIK, you'll like the ability to navigate directories and mark files in a "scrollable" window. It is fully "mouseable" and supports the viewing, extraction and creation of ZIP format files! There are too many features to go into here. It's a great deal -- PIK 2.10 and SPELLBOUND! Director File Manager -- all for only $16.00 PART 0.0.1 PIK CREATES "LZH" FILES USING YOSHI'S LHA 2.10 In addition to handling the creation of ZIP format files using PKWare's (R) PKZIP.EXE, the program now handles the creation of LZH format compressed files using Haruyasu Yoshizaki's excellent LHA version 2.10. It is expected that later versions will work as well, but since we cannot anticipate future changes to LHA, we cannot guarantee success with later versions. PART 0.0.2 PIK CREATES SELF-EXTRACTING FILES When creating either ZIP or LZH files, you will now be asked if you wish to create a self-extracting EXE file from either file type. To create a self-extract file from a ZIP file, PKWare's (R) ZIP2EXE.EXE must be located in a directory in your Path. PIK uses the "Large Model" (/x1) Self-extracting file option when creating self-extracting files with LHA. Only LHA.EXE is required when creating a self-extracting LZH file. PART 0.0.3 PIK CAN NOW RUN "DIR" FOR YOU If PIK finds no filenames on the screen when it starts, it will give you a message to apprise you of this, prompt you for a file spec and then run the "DIR" command with the "/P" switch. PART 0.0.4 DISTRIBUTING PIK Please only distribute the entire PIK distribution package containing the files: PIK.EXE PIK.DOC ORDER.FRM We found several copies of PIK being distributed which had no documentation. PIK displays no shareware messages when it runs for your convenience. If you distribute it without documentation, we do not get paid for our work. We were strongly tempted to include a shareware screen in this version, but we realized that the beauty of PIK is that you are in and out very quickly. Please distribute PIK with all the files above. Distributing PIK in any other way is an infringement of our copyright. Federal law provides both civil and criminal penalties for copyright infringement. PART 0.1 CHANGES FROM 1.10 A single change was made to allow PIK to recognize filenames not displayed with DOS' justified format, such as under 4DOS. Previously PIK only recognized filenames in DOS justified format. JUSTIFIED -- PIK EXE UNJUSTIFIED -- PIK.EXE PIK now recognizes either of these formats. PART 1.0 THE PITCH SPELLBOUND! Software products in the SPELLBOUND! Software file area, and registration for the board is free and friendly! PART 2.0 INSTALLATION Installation of PIK is very simple. For best results, just copy the file, PIK.EXE into a directory which has been included in your PATH environment variable. The PATH environment variable is usually set when you boot your computer. There should be a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory of your boot drive which says something like: PATH C:\UTIL;C:\DOS. This is your path statement. In this case, you could copy the two files into C:\UTIL. This way, you could run PIK from anywhere on your system by just typing "PIK". In addition, you must also have the PKWare (R) utility PKZIP.EXE and Yoshi's LHA.EXE in your PATH as well. PIK calls upon PKZIP.EXE to create the ZIP file when you mark files to be "zipped" and uses LHA.EXE when you specify the creation of an "LZH" file. PKZIP.EXE and LHA.EXE are available on almost all Bulletin Boards and from nearly every shareware distribution service. The most recent version of PKZIP.EXE as of this writing is contained in the distribution file PKZ110.EXE, which is a self-extracting ZIP format file containing all of PKWare's (R) ZIP file utilities and documentation. The most recent version of LHA.EXE as of this writing is contained in the distribution file LHA210.EXE, a self-extracting file containing the entire LHA package including documentation. If you wish to create ZIP format self-extracting files, you will also need to have PKWare's (R) ZIP2EXE.EXE located in your PATH as well. ZIP2EXE is distributed with PKZIP/PKUNZIP (R), so if you have PKZIP.EXE, you should also have ZIP2EXE.EXE. ZIP files are files ending with the extension ".ZIP". LHA creates files having the extension ".LZH". These files have been compressed to an average of half their original size for storage or for transfer my modem. PART 3.0 PURPOSE PIK is a very useful utility which allows you to pick files from the standard DOS "DIR" display to mark for Deleting, Copying, Moving, Zipping into a Zip format compressed file or for creating and LZH format compressed file using Yoshi's LHA.EXE. How many times have you typed "DIR" to examine the contents of a directory and seen several files which should be moved, deleted, or stored for later use in ZIP format. The commands necessary to accomplish the task could take some time. By typing "PIK", you can select the files upon which to perform the necessary operation right from the display left behind by the "DIR" command. Once the files have been marked, you just press ENTER and you are on your way to finishing the task! PART 4.0 USAGE SYNTAX: PIK [Option] ...where "Option" can be any of: COPY, MOVE, DEL, ERASE, ZIP or LZH. To save you time, PIK will also recognize just the first letter of any of these options. If "Option" is not specified, you will be asked to select an option when the program starts. To use the program, just type DIR and a filespec to display the files from which you wish to pick. You MUST be in the directory which contains the files displayed on the screen. For best performance, put PIK.EXE into a directory which is in your PATH so that it may be run from anywhere. PIK recognizes filenames displayed in normal justified format (ie. "PIK EXE" as well as the 4DOS default format, (ie. "PIK.EXE"). It will only recognize files in the first column when displaying using the "/W" command, however. Once the files have been displayed on the screen, just type PIK and press ENTER. You will see 3 lines of information appear at the bottom of the screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight the desired operation and press ENTER when the desired operation is highlighted. Now move the highlight bar over the file names, pressing the spacebar to mark the files upon which you wish to perform the selected operation. The program first checks to see if the file exists in the current directory before marking. On a floppy disk, this can be quite slow, but on a hard disk this will be instantaneous. Once all of the desired files have been marked, press ENTER to perform the DEL, COPY, MOVE, ZIP or LHA. If the files are to be deleted, you will be asked to confirm the deletion. If the files are to be MOVEd or COPYd, you will be asked to specify a destination directory. Do NOT specify the same directory! If ZIPping or LHAing the files, you will be asked for a ZIP or LZH file name into which to compress the files, and then asked whether to [A]dd the files to the ZIP or LZH file or [M]ove them into it. (Moving deletes the files after successfully adding to the compressed file. If the move was unsuccessful, the deletion will not occur.) You will then be asked if you wish to create a self-extracting file. The default answer is "N" (No). As the files are processed, the right side of the screen will confirm the operation on each file. When deleting files, the first character of the filename will be changed to ASCII 229 "å" which is the same character DOS uses to mark a file as deleted in the directory. This is a concession to a neurotic friend of SPELLBOUND! Software, Jim Olson, sysop of the Mainstream BBS. Neat huh? PART 5.0 THE SPELLBOUND! SHAREWARE CURSE... You are granted a limited license to use the program for 5 days. If after 5 days, you continue to use the program, you MUST register to continue to use it. If you do not register, you may give copies to friends and upload it to bulletin boards, but you must not continue to make use of the program. If you use the program and enjoy it, send at least $7.00. If you fail to send the $7.00, you will fall into the snare of the SPELLBOUND! Software Super Duper New and Improved, All Purpose Shareware curse. When we at SPELLBOUND! decided to come up with our own curse, we looked in the yellow pages for a "medium". Although it seems like a contradiction in terms, they are very "rare", so we had to settle for a "Weldon". Weldon is not a medium -- but his rates were reasonable. (We think Weldon IS a little "Well done" due to forgetting to close the microwave door one too many times.) He agreed to do the job for mentioning his name in this documentation.
