The Hewlett-Packard &a+1032HDeskJet printers do this. Compute the top auto skip by &a+1032Hmultiplying the distance it skips (in inches) by 6. &a+1032HDeskJet Plus printers have a half inch left margin and a &a+1032Hquarter inch top margin. If you set &a+1032Hthe number too large, the lines will overprint each other. A left indent of three (on a LaserJet) is required &a+312Hto prevent loss of characters at the left side of the paper. Likewise, a &a+312Hright indent of three is needed. If your printer clips characters at the &a+312Hend of the right side of the paper it is because the unprintable region &a+312His larger than three columns. To correct this you will need to adjust &a+312Hthe left and right indents. A similar situation exists with the top and &a+312Hbottom margins. If you get character clipping from your print out, &a+312Hincrease the these margins. &a+672HWith mono-spaced 12 point fonts you can compute the characters which &a+312Hcan be printed across the logical page. The formula for this is: &a+312H C = Truncate((L * 16.67 - 1)/2)-RightIndent-LeftIndent-Gutter &a+312H L is the long dimension of the page &a+312H C is the characters per line on the logical page &a+312HFor example on 8.5x11 inch paper (LETTER) with a three column left indent &a+312Hand no gutter, the formula is: &a+312H C = Truncate((11 * 16.67 - 1)/2) - 3 &a+312Hwhich gives 88 characters per logical page. Remember that the left &a+312Hindent must be at least three characters because of the unprintable left &a+312Hmargin. &a+312H&dDWORD PROCESSOR DOCUMENTS&d@ &a+312HBOOKLET has the ability to handle documents from most word processors &a+312Hprovided that you get the word processor to apply its printer formatting(10U(s3t12vpsb10H &a480V &a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD16&d@ &l4C &l8C&a+312Hfirst. Typically, you do this by having the word processor "print" the &a+312Hdocument to a disk file. The file thus created will contain Printer &a+312HControl Language (PCL) codes that manage the font selection and &a+312Hformatting of the document when it is printed. BOOKLET will process &a+312Hthese codes and modify them appropriately for the reduced sized document &a+312Hit produces. &a+312HFor example, if you are using Microsoft Word for DOS (version 5.5) and &a+312HMicrosoft Word for Windows, select "File", "Print", in the dialog box &a+312Hwhich comes up, select "to File" then fill in the name of the file to be &a+312Hcreated. (WinWord will pup up a dialog box for the name.) This will &a+312Hcause Word to format the file as if it were printing it, but put the &a+312Houtput in the file you named. &a+312HFor both the DOS and Windows version of WordPerfect you create a PCL file &a+312Hby setting the printer to be a disk file. This is achieved by setting the &a+312Hprinter port to a file name instead of to the normal port such as LPT1:, &a+312HCOM2: etc. &a+312HFor WP DOS this is achieved with the keystrokes Shift-F7,S,3,2,8 and then &a+312Henter a file name at the prompt. Continue hitting Enter until you are &a+312Hback at the first menu and then select the appropriate print option. &a+312HFor WPWIN, with the mouse, select "File", "Print", "Select", "Setup", and &a+312H"Port" from the Destination Group. This will produce a drop down dialog &a+312Hbox. Select File. You will then be placed in an edit box so that you can &a+312Henter a file name. After entering this just "OK" your way back, select &a+312Hthe printer and print from the opening print dialog box. &a+312HRemember to go back and repeat the above procedures to restore the port &a+312Hselection to the one to which you printer is connected. &a+312HMost other word processors will have a similar mechanism. Remember, if &a+312Hyou enter a file name without a path, it will be created in whatever is &a+312Hthe default directory at the time. Therefore, it is better to enter a &a+312Hfull path for the file name. It is also a good idea to use a convention &a+312Hfor the suffix of your filename such as "PCL". (E.g. the file could be &a+312Hnamed OUTPUT.PCL). File suffixes will help you keep things straight. &a+312HRemember, BOOKLET does not create any fonts. It will scale any font &a+312Hspecification in your document and leave it up to your printer to pick &a+312Hthe closest match. Sometimes this match is not compatible with the &a+312Hformatting precision of your document. If you have a printer with built &a+312Hin scaleable fonts (such as the Hewlett Packhard LaserJet III) use those &a+312Hwhen you format your document. See also FONT SELECTION on page 11. &a+312H&dDRECOVERING FROM PRINTER ERRORS&d@ &a+672HBOOKLET will detect and recover from temporary print interruptions &a+312Hsuch as &dDOut of Paper&d@ or &dDPrinter Not Ready&d@. It will display a message &a+312Hwhen it has detected such a condition and will erase the message and &a+312Hresume printing once you have corrected the problem. It may display an &a+312Herror number rather than a text message. These are traps for errors for &a+312Hwhich I do not know the meaning. The state of the &a+312Hprinter may be lost due to the error. If so, continuing will not produce &a+312Hcorrect output. &a+672HOne cause of print interruption is paper jams. Recovery from these &a+312Hmay take some effort on your part. Generally Laser printers will reprint &a+312Hpages involved in paper jams. If you let it do so during the second side &a+312Hprinting of your document, you may find that the back sides may not be &a+312Hprinted on the appropriate front side. If the original page is &a+312Hundamaged, you should re feed it. Otherwise, you can feed a blank page &a+312Hfor the reprint and use the /J option to reprint the damaged page. &a+672HIt may be simplest to abort printing when the jam occurs. You then &a+312Hreset the printer and start again using the /J option. You can reprint &a+312Hthe sheet involved with /J:n:n (n is the sheet number of the jam.) Then &a+312Hyou can resume printing of the second sides (on the remaining front &a+312Hsides) by using the /JS parameter to print the remainder of the pages. &a+312HNote: When you restart printing of the second sides, BOOKLET assumes you &a+312Hhave already placed the first sides into the paper feed tray ready for &a+312Hprinting. It does not prompt you for this. &a+672HIf you find it necessary to stop BOOKLET from printing at any time, &a+312Hjust press the ESC key. BOOKLET will stop and offer you the chance to &a+312Hcontinue or abort the printing. &a+312H&dDPAPER CURL&d@ &a+672HMost problems with jamming are caused by paper curl. The heat of &a+312Hthe printing tends to cause paper to warp. There are two things you can &a+312Hdo to minimize this problem. The first is to use good quality laser &a+312Hprinter paper stock. The second is to manually take the curl out of the &a+312Hpaper. Since good quality paper costs up to three times ordinary copier &a+312Hpaper, the second option is often chosen. &a+672HTake the output from the first pass printing. Hold it face up by &a+312Hthe short sides. Find a sharp edge, such as the edge of a desk. Draw &a+312Hthe paper across the edge as if you were polishing shoes with it. This &a+312Hwill introduce a curl opposite the one caused by the printer. &a+312H&dDFONT SELECTION&d@ &a+672HWhen BOOKLET prints a document containing font selection codes, it &a+312Hconverts those codes by scaling the pitch and point size parts of the &a+312Hcode. These are scaled such that the effect is for fonts to be specified &a+312Hwith all the same type face characteristics as the original, but with the &a+312Hsize of the type face about two thirds the original. &a+672HIf the printer you are using is a LaserJet III and you have selected &a+312Ha scaleable type face, then the printout will be a page of text which is &a+312Han image of the original but two thirds the size. When the selected type &a+312Hface is not scaleable, the printer will use a font selection matching &a+312Halgorithm. Hewlett-Packard printers use a priority selection scheme &a+312Hwhich considers, in order of priority, orientation, symbol set, pitch (if &a+312Hthe font is not proportional), font point size, type face style, and(10U(s3t12vpsb10H &a480V &a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD18&d@ &l4C &l8C&a+312Hstroke weight. For a full treatment of this algorithm, see your &a+312Hprinter's reference manual. &a+672HThe effect of this algorithm is for the printer to use a font it &a+312Hbelieves is the "closest" to what was requested. For BOOKLET, in most &a+312Hcases this means it will use the 16.67 character per inch lineprinter &a+312Hfont. Even when there is a small font with the right type face for the &a+312Hprinter to select, the results may not be what you would expect. The &a+312Hselection algorithm may result in a font which does not work well for the &a+312Hreduced document. This will often be the case when you have used &a+312Hproportional fonts and proportional spacing in your document. The result &a+312Hmay be words overlapping each other. &a+672HThere is not much BOOKLET can do about problems of font selection. &a+312HYou can experiment with different fonts to find the most pleasing result. &a+672HOther difficulties you may have with format transformations are that &a+312Hcentering and tab spacing may not scale proportionally. This is due to &a+312Hdifferences between the scaled font size and the actual font used by the &a+312Hprinter. If you use spaces to do your formatting and stick to one font &a+312Hsize, the output will generally look correct. &a+312HAlso, often the small fonts selected by the font scaling do not have &dDbold&d@ &a+312Hor &dDitalic&d@ type faces.
