XVT is a software development tool that allows developers to create interactive, graphical applications that are 100% portable across different window systems. Currently, XVT implementations are available for the Mac, MS-Windows, OS/2-Presentation Manager, and the X Window System with Motif. A character-based implementation is also available. This program, XVT-Draw, is an example of some of what you can do with XVT. However, what you see in XVT-Draw is by no means the extent of what you can do with XVT. For example, XVT-Draw uses menus for shapes, pens, and brushes, rather than a palette at the side of the window. This says more about XVT-Draw than about XVT, as palettes are easily handled with XVT. In addition to specifications, info on availability, and prices, you can also get a free 20+ page technical overview of XVT. @Changing Object's Pen, Fill, Font, or Style To change an object's attributes, first select it and then choose appropriately from the Pen, Fill, Font, or Style menus. The current attributes (those that apply to new objects) will not be changed. Of course, only those attributes that an object actually has can be changed. You can't change the Font of a rectangle or the Fill of a line of text. @Clipboard When you cut or copy selected objects, they are put on the clipboard in two forms: as an XVT-Draw group (clipboard type XVTD), and as a picture (type PICT). XVTD objects can be pasted only by XVT-Draw, but PICT object can be pasted by many Macintosh applications. When you paste with XVT-Draw, three kinds of objects can be accessed. In order of priority they are XVTD, TEXT, and PICT. Thus, it's possible to prepare textual material with another program and then paste it into XVT-Draw. Be aware, however, that often what looks like a paragraph (several lines) in a word processor will come into XVT-Draw as a single line, and will often be too long. XVT-Draw will clip off anything beyond 200 characters. Also, you can prepare pictures with a painting program and then paste them into XVT-Draw. Objects pasted into XVT-Draw always come in as a group, even if the group contains only a single object. @Drawing To draw an object, choose the shape you want from the Shape menu and move the cursor to where you want the object to appear. For a line, scribble, rectangle, rounded rectangle, oval, arc, or wedge, you drag an outline of the object. The object is created when you let up on the mouse button. For a text object, click at the starting point of the text line. You'll then see a blinking caret and you can begin typing. You can use the Delete or Backspace key to erase typing errors, and Return to go to a new line. Each text line is a separate object. For bent lines and polygons, click at the starting point and position the first line segment by moving the mouse (with the button up). Click once to turn a corner. Double click to finish the object. After you finish drawing an object, the shape will change to the pointer. If you want the drawing shape to stick around instead, hold down the Option key while you choose from the Shape menu. You then will have to choose Pointer or another shape explicitly to change the shape. @Edit Menu The Edit menu includes commands for cutting and copying to the clipboard, pasting from the clipboard, clearing, selecting all objects or none, flipping objects, and converting objects to pictures. See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ Undo@(Edit Menu) This command is not implemented in XVT-Draw, but is provided for use by desk accessories. @ Cut@(Edit Menu) The command deletes the selected objects from the drawing and puts them on the clipboard. See the topic "Clipboard" for more information. @ Copy@(Edit Menu) This command copies the selected objects to the clipboard. See the topic "Clipboard" for more information. @ Paste@(Edit Menu) This command adds the contents of the clipboard to the drawing as a group located in the center of the window. See the topic "Clipboard" for information about the types of data that can be pasted into XVT-Draw. @ Clear@(Edit Menu) This command deletes the selected objects from the drawing without putting them on the clipboard - they are lost for good. The Delete or Backspace key does the same thing. @ Select All@(Edit Menu) This command selects all objects. @ Deselect All@(Edit Menu) This command deselects all objects that are currently selected. Use it before changing the current pen, fill, font, or style so as to avoid accidentally changing a selected object. @ Hor Flip@(Edit Menu) This command flips the selected objects horizontally. It is ineffective on text and picture objects. @ Ver Flip@(Edit Menu) This command flips the selected objects vertically. It is ineffective on text and picture objects. @ Convert to Pict@(Edit Menu) This command converts the selected objects to a (single) QuickDraw picture. It's really just for fun, as it has no practical use. (Note that conversion to PICT format happens automatically when you cut or copy to the clipboard - it's not necessary to use this command for that purpose.) @File Format XVT-Draw drawings are saved in a special format that's neither readable nor writable by any other Macintosh application. To exchange drawings with other applications, use the clipboard instead. Sadly, the file format isn't compatible with the Windows version of XVT-Draw, either. @File Menu The File menu includes commands for opening untitled windows or windows containing existing drawings, closing windows, saving drawings, discarding changes, printing, and quitting. See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ New@(File Menu) This command opens a new untitled window. Up to 5 windows can be opened at once. @ Open@(File Menu) This command opens an existing drawing file, in a new window (unless the current window hasn't yet been used). Up to 5 windows can be opened at once. @ Close@(File Menu) This command closes the current window. When a desk accessory is active, it closes the desk accessory. @ Save@(File Menu) This command saves the current drawing in a file. If the window doesn't have a title, you'll be prompted to supply a file name. See the topic "File Format" for further information. @ Save As@(File Menu) This command is similar to Save, but it allows you to specify a file name that's different from the window title. @ Revert to Saved@(File Menu) This command discards any changes you've made to a drawing since the last time it was saved. @ Page Setup@(File Menu) This command brings up the standard page setup dialog box. There's a different dialog for each type of printer. @ Print@(File Menu) This command prints the drawing in the active window. Only one drawing can be printed at a time. Before issuing this command, make sure you have chosen the proper printer with the Chooser desk accessory, and that you have issued the Page Setup command to tell XVT-Draw about your choice. @ Quit@(File Menu) This command exits from XVT-Draw back to the Finder. @Fill Menu This menu includes commands for choosing the fill color or pattern (if any) for the interior of rectangles, rounded rectangles, polygons, ovals, and wedges. If no objects are selected, a check mark appears next to the current fill. If one atomic object is selected, the check mark indicates that object's fill, if it has an interior. If several objects or a group is selected, no check mark appears, but you can still choose a fill to change the selected objects. You will be able to see through it to whatever is in back of it. @ Color@(Fill Menu) These items choose various fill colors (shades of gray only): White Light Gray Gray Dark Gray Black @ Pattern@(Fill Menu) These items choose various fill patterns: Hor Hatch Ver Hatch Back Diag Hatch Forward Diag Hatch Cross Hatch Diag Cross Hatch @Font Menu This menu contains the standard fonts that you have installed on your system. If no objects are selected, a check mark appears next to the current font. If one atomic object is selected, the check mark indicates that object's font, if it is a text object. If several objects or a group is selected, no check mark appears, but you can still choose a font to change the selected objects. @Grouping Objects To group objects, first select them. (Both atomic objects and groups can be selected.) Then choose Group from the Layout menu. A group that gets grouped will first be broken into its atomic objects, so groups won't contain other groups. To break a group into its atomic objects, choose Break Group from the Layout menu. When you cut or copy an object or several objects, and then paste them, they always come in as a group. @Layout Menu This menu includes commands to move objects to the front or back, to group or ungroup objects, to align objects with the grid, with each other, or with the page, and to arrange objects with even spacing between them. See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ To Front@(Layout Menu) This command moves the selected objects to the front, so that they obscure objects in back of them. @ To Back@(Layout Menu) This command moves the selected objects to the back, so that they are obscured by objects in front of them. @ Group@(Layout Menu) This command makes a group out of the selected objects. If any objects were already grouped, those groups are first broken, so that the resulting group will consist only of atomic objects. @ Break Group@(Layout Menu) This command breaks those groups that are selected. @ Align Left@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the leftmost selected object where it is, and moves the other objects leftward so that the selected objects are aligned along their left boundary. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ Align Center@(Layout Menu) This commands calculates the left/right center of the selected objects by taking the midpoint between the left boundary of the leftmost object and the right boundary of the rightmost object. Then it moves the selected objects so that their horizontal centers are positioned at that midpoint. The vertical positions of the objects aren't changed. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ Align Right@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the rightmost selected object where it is, and moves the other objects rightward so that the selected objects are aligned along their right boundary. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ To Page Center@(Layout Menu) This command moves the selected objects so that their horizontal centers are located at the left/right center of the page. The vertical positions of the objects aren't changed. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the centered objects are snapped to the grid. @ Align Top@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the topmost selected object where it is, and moves the other objects upward so that the selected objects are aligned along their top boundary. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ Align Middle@(Layout Menu) This commands calculates the top/bottom middle of the selected objects by taking the midpoint between the top boundary of the topmost object and the bottom boundary of the bottommost object. Then it moves the selected objects so that their vertical middles are positioned at that midpoint. The horizontal positions of the objects aren't changed. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ Align Bottom@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the bottommost selected object where it is, and moves the other objects downward so that the selected objects are aligned along their bottom boundary. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the aligned objects are snapped to the grid. This command can also be used to snap a single object to the grid. @ To Page Middle@(Layout Menu) This command moves the selected objects so that their vertical middles are located at the top/bottom middle of the page. The horizontal positions of the objects aren't changed. If snap is enabled (Enable Snap on the View Menu), the relocated objects are snapped to the grid. @ Even Hor Spacing@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the leftmost and rightmost selected objects where they are, and then moves the selected objects between them left or right so that the space between each adjacent pair of objects is the same. Objects are not snapped to the grid, regardless of whether grid snap is enabled. If the object are so large that they don't fit with space between them, this command still moves them, but the resulting arrangement may seem weird. @ Even Ver Spacing@(Layout Menu) This command leaves the topmost and bottommost selected objects where they are, and then moves the selected objects between them up or down so that the space between each adjacent pair of objects is the same. Objects are not snapped to the grid, regardless of whether grid snap is enabled. If the object are so large that they don't fit with space between them, this command still moves them, but the resulting arrangement may seem weird. @Objects and Groups CATEGORIES OF OBJECTS Objects fall into these categories: Atomic Objects Graphical Objects Lines Bent Lines Scribbles Rectangles Rounded Rectangles Polygons Ovals Arcs Wedges Text Objects Picture Objects Group Objects (containing Atomic Objects) WHERE OBJECTS COME FROM You can draw graphical objects and type text objects by choosing appropriately from the Shape menu. You can't create a picture directly, but you can get one by selecting other objects and then choosing Convert to Pict from the Edit menu (this has little practical use). Also, you can paste a picture that was created from some other program (MacPaint, for example). A text object is always a single line of text, never a paragraph. However, you can type several text objects and have them line up vertically by just hitting Return after each line. Each line is a separate object, but you can select them all and then group them to make a paragraph. Atomic objects can be grouped into group objects. If you group a group object, the existing group object is first broken into its atomic objects, and then they are grouped. That is, a group can never contain another group; it can contain atomic objects only. MOVING OBJECTS Any object can be moved by selecting it and dragging it by its middle with the pointer (be sure the cursor is a pointer first). RESIZING OBJECTS A graphical, picture, or group object can be resized by selecting it and dragging one of its 8 handles with the pointer. A text object can't be resized in this way, but its point size can be changed by selecting it and choosing a different point size from the Style menu (its font and style can be changed, too). If you convert a text object to a picture, you can resize the picture, but the resized text usually will look bad. OBJECT ORDERING Objects are arranged from front to back. An object covers any objects behind it that it overlaps. You can move objects all the way to the front or back by selecting them and choosing To Front or To Back from the Layout menu. If you send several objects to the front or back at once, their relative order is preserved. FLIPPING OBJECTS Graphical objects and groups can be flipped horizontally or vertically by choosing Hor Flip or Ver Flip from the Edit menu. Pictures and text can't be flipped. RESIZING AND FLIPPING GROUPS When a group is resized, the location of text objects within it may be changed, but the text objects themselves will stay the same size. When a group is flipped, the location within the group of pictures and text will be flipped, but the pictures and text won't be. @Pen Menu This menu includes commands for choosing the pen (color and thickness) for the perimeter of graphical objects (lines, bent lines, scribbles, rectangles, rounded rectangles, polygons, ovals, arcs, and wedges). There is also an item to choose the end style for lines and bent lines. If no objects are selected, a check mark appears next to the current pen's color and thickness. If one atomic object is selected, the check marks indicate that object's pen, if it is a graphical object (neither text nor a picture). If several objects or a group is selected, no check marks appear, but you can still choose a color or thickness to change the selected objects. See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ Color@(Pen Menu) These items choose the pen color: None (the perimeter isn't drawn) Black White @ Thicknesses@(Pen Menu) These items choose the pen thickness: Thin (1 pixel) Thick (2) Thicker (4) Even Thicker (6) Thickest (8) @ Line Ends@(Pen Menu) This command brings up a dialog box that let's you choose whether the start and/or end of lines and bent lines should have arrows. When the box comes up, it indicates the current setting if no objects are selected. If one atomic object is selected, and it has ends, the box shows that object's end styles. If several objects or a group is selected, the box has no options checked, but you can still choose a style to change the selected objects. @Selecting Objects SELECTING AN OBJECT WITH THE POINTER To select an object, choose Pointer from the Shape menu and click within the object's bounding rectangle (you may have to guess at exactly what rectangle this is, since it's imaginary). This deselects the objects (if any) that used to be selected. When you draw a new object (other than a text object), it is automatically selected as though you had clicked on it with the pointer. You can tell that an object is selected by the appearance of 8 handles (small filled rectangles) around the perimeter of its bounding rectangle. EXTENDING OR CONTRACTING A SELECTION If you want to add an unselected object to the collection of selected objects, hold down Shift while you click on it, in the normal Macintosh fashion. If you hold down Shift while you click on an already selected object, it is removed from the collection of selected objects, leaving the others still selected. SELECTING AN OBSCURED OBJECT When one object overlaps another at the point where you are clicking, the front object is the one that will be selected. To select the one behind it, first select the front object and then hold down the Option key while you click again. The object just in back of the selected object will then be selected. If there are lots of overlapping objects at that point, you can select each of them in turn by continuing to click with the Option key held down. When the backmost object is selected, holding down Option selects the frontmost object. In other words, the Option key changes the meaning of a click from "select the frontmost object" to "select the frontmost object that's in back of the selected object." Note that if nothing is selected at that location, then the Option key has no special effect (the frontmost object will be selected). The Option key has no effect at all if Shift is also held down; you can't combine their effects, unfortunately. SELECTING BY DRAGGING If you start dragging the pointer in a place where no objects lie, a rubber band rectangle will appear that can be used to surround objects to be selected (similar to what happens in the Macintosh Finder). You must completely surround an object's bounding rectangle for it to be selected (not similar to the Macintosh Finder). SELECTING ALL OR NONE You can select all objects or deselect all objects by choosing Select All or Deselect All from the Edit menu. @Setting Current Pen, Fill, Font, or Style When a new object is drawn, its attributes (pen, fill, font, and style, as appropriate) are those that are current for that drawing. When no object is selected, check marks on the Pen, Fill, Font, and Style menus show what the current attributes are. To change a current attribute, choose from the appropriate menu when no object is selected. If you have an object selected by mistake, its attribute may change inadvertently, and the current attribute will not be affected. @Shape Menu This menu contains items that choose the current shape, including the pointer, the zoomer, and object shapes. The current shape is checked. You can't change the shape of an existing object by choosing from this menu, but you can usually adjust its shape by selecting it and dragging one of its handles. When you pick an object shape (anything other than Pointer or Zoomer), the shape normally changes back to Pointer after you draw an object. If you want the shape to stick instead, hold down the Option key while you choose from the Shape menu (you have to have the key down before you pull the menu down - it's not enough to press Option after the menu is already down). See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ Pointer@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to activate the pointer - the shape that's used for selecting objects, moving them, and resizing them. See the topic "Selecting Objects" for more information. @ Zoomer@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to activate the zoomer. The cursor changes to a box that you can see through. Position it over a point on the drawing and click. The view will be zoomed (as though you had chosen Zoom In from the View Menu) with that point approximately centered. See the topic "Zooming" for more information. @ Text@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to type text. The cursor changes to an I-beam, with a tick mark indicating the hot spot. Click where you want to start typing. The cursor will disappear, and a blinking caret will show instead. The text you type will have its baseline located at the hot spot. While typing, you can use Delete or Backspace to erase the last character typed. You can use Return to start a new line, but each line will be a separate text object. Aside from the use of the Delete or Backspace key, no other editing of text is possible. The text will be drawn in the current font, style, and point size. @ Line@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a straight line. Press the mouse button where you want the line to start, drag to the endpoint, and release. The line will be drawn with the current pen (color, thickness, and end style). @ Bent Line@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a bent line - a sequence of connected line segments. Click the mouse button where you want the line to start. With the button up, move the mouse to the first vertex, and click once. Move to the second vertex, click again, and continue until the mouse reaches the end. Then double click to end the line. The line will be drawn with the current pen (color, thickness, and end style). Bent lines are not polygons - they have no interior, so they can't be filled. @ Scribble@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw freehand with the mouse. Press the button where you want to start, and draw while dragging the mouse. Release the button to end the line. The line will be drawn with the current pen (color and thickness). Scribbles are not polygons - they have no interior, so they can't be filled. @ Rectangle@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a rectangle. Press the mouse button where you want the rectangle to start, drag until the shape is the right size, and then release the button. The rectangle will be drawn with the current pen and fill (but it has no end style). @ Rounded Rectangle@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a rectangle with rounded corners. Press the mouse button where you want the rectangle to start, drag until the shape is the right size, and then release the button. The rectangle will be drawn with the current pen and fill (but it has no end style). @ Polygon@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a polygon - an arbitrarily-shaped object with at least 3 sides. Click the mouse button where you want the polygon to start. With the button up, move the mouse to the first vertex, and click once. Move to the second vertex, click again, and continue until the mouse reaches the end. Then double click to end the polygon. If you don't close the polygon by finishing where you started, the polygon will be closed automatically. The polygon will be drawn with the current pen and fill (but it has no end style). @ Oval@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw an oval. Press the mouse button where you want the oval to start, drag until the shape is the right size, and then release the button. The oval will be drawn with the current pen and fill (but it has no end style). @ Arc@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw an arc. Press the mouse button where you want the arc to start, drag until the shape is the right size, and then release the button. You'll discover that the shape of the arc depends on the direction in which you drag the mouse. The arc will be drawn with the current pen. It has no interior to fill, nor does it have an end style. @ Wedge@(Shape Menu) Choose this item to draw a wedge. Press the mouse button where you want the wedge to start, drag until the shape is the right size, and then release the button. If several objects or a group is selected, no check marks appear, but you can still choose a style or point size to change the selected objects. @View Menu This menu contains items that let you see a reduced or enlarged view of your drawing, show or hide a ruler, disable or enable snapping, choose the scale and snap interval, and redraw the window. See the sub-topics under this heading for more information. @ Full View, Previous View@(View Menu) The Full View command shows you the entire page at once. Then the menu item changes to Previous View; choosing that puts the view back to the way it was. See the topic "Zooming" for more information. @ Zoom In@(View Menu) This command zooms in so you can see more detail. See the topic "Zooming" for more information. @ Zoom Out@(View Menu) This command reverses the effect of the last zoom in (via the zoomer or the Zoom In command). See the topic "Zooming" for more information. @ Normal Size@(View Menu) The command returns the view to normal size, either from a zoomed-in size, or from the full view. Normal size means that the drawing appears on the screen approximately the same size as it will be printed. If you change the page setup, the dimensions of normal size may change. See the topic "Zooming" for more information. @ Show Ruler, Hide Ruler@(View Menu) This command causes rulers to appear along the top and left edge of the window. The rulers are in inches or centimeters, depending on which scale you have selected. See the sub-topic "Scale" under "View Menu" for more information. @ Disable Snap, Enable Snap@(View Menu) Initially, snap is enabled; choose Disable Snap to disable it. Then this item becomes Enable Snap. You can choose the snap interval (from 1 unit to 1/16 of a unit) via a dialog box accessible through the Scale command on the View Menu. Snapping means that locations are forced to a point on an imaginary grid. This affects the following operations: - drawing objects - dragging an object's handles - moving an object - aligning objects Snapping never affects typing (except for the starting point), scribbling, or even-spacing. To learn more about the effects of snapping, choose a fairly large interval (say, 1/2 unit) with the Scale dialog box, and try it out. @ Scale@(View Menu) Choose this command to bring up a dialog box that let's you choose the units (inches or centimeters) and the snap interval. See the sub-topics "Show Rulers" and "Disable Snap" under "View Menu" for more information. @ Redraw@(View Menu) Choose this command to redraw the screen. It should never be necessary to do this, but if the drawing looks incomplete or contains scuff marks, try redrawing it. If the problem clears up, you have discovered a drawing bug. @Zooming When the drawing is normal size, you can choose Zoom In from the View menu to see the drawing twice as big. You can keep zooming in until your view of it becomes 16 times normal size. When the drawing is in the full view, zooming in just returns the view to the previous size. It's effect is identical to choosing Previous View. From a zoomed-in view, you can zoom back out by choosing Zoom Out. To get all the way to normal size quickly, just choose Normal Size. When zooming in or out, the point on the drawing that's at the upper left of the window stays there. If the part you want to zoom in on is somewhere else in the window, it may be out of sight after you zoom in. You can then scroll the window to see it again in its bigger size. It's a lot easier to use the zoomer. Choose Zoomer from the Shape menu. Position the hollow cursor over the part of the drawing you want to see bigger, and click. This will do the same thing as choosing Zoom In, but the point you've clicked on will be approximately centered. When the drawing is normal size or zoomed in, you can easily scroll it to see something currently out of sight by choosing Full View and then zooming with the zoomer. The view will return to its previous view, but the point you want to see will be in the window. This is most convenient when you have zoomed in to a high magnification, since its extremely difficult then to find your way around by scrolling alone.
