---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IFix A simple fix for Windows 3.0 icons created with Icondraw Version 0.9 (Beta) Part of the "I" series of icon programs by James Bell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction IFix is designed to quickly identify and patch the infamous "bad" Icondraw icons. These icons were created with Icondraw (versions 1.0 or 1.1) and cause Windows to halt with an "Unrecoverable Application Error" (UAE) when used in '386 Enhanced mode. As far as I know, version 1.2 of Icondraw does not make the same mistake, nor does any other icon editor I've seen. The icons have one bad byte in the icon header. At offset 14 the byte should be $E8, in the Icondraw icons its $D8. You can fix these icons one at a time with an editor like Norton, or use IFix to do the job all at once. IFix checks each file specified and patches the file if it has the "bad" byte at offset 14. Using IFix IFix is easy to use, just give the file specification for the icons you want to check (and if bad, fix) like you would for DOS's DIR command. For example (at the DOS prompt): IFIX C:\WIN\*.ICN : Check/fix all the ICN icons in the WIN dir. : IFIX C:\WINDOWS\ICONS\*.ICO : Check/fix all ICO icons : IFIX A:\*.IC? : Check/fix ICN and ICO icons : IFIX BADONE.ICN : Check/fix a single icon file Typing "IFIX" alone also gives the command syntax. IFix checks to see that each file is 766 bytes long, but does NOT check further to see if the file is actually an icon file. IFix could potentially damage a non-icon file if it was 766 bytes long and was within your file specification. So be careful of using "*.*" as your file specification. IEdit and IDir require a VGA and mouse, IExtract and IInject require at least an EGA. All of the "I" series of programs require an 80286 or better processor. * IEdit - The Icon Editor ----------------------- The core of the "I" series, IEdit is a feature-packed icon creation and editing tool. Functions like Mirror, Invert, Grid, and more separate IEdit from the other icon editors. IEdit is being used across the U.S. by individuals, corporations, universities, as well as in Europe and the U.K. * IExtract -------- IExtract lets you look inside of your favorite Windows programs and "steal" their icons for editing or use elsewhere. This is now been built into IEdit as the EXTRACT function. * IInject ------- The companion to IExtract, with IInject you can permanently replace the icon in a Windows application with your own. You can even change those annoying "Group" and "DOS" icons in Windows itself. * IMenu ----- IMenu lets you use your Windows 3.0 icons to create a DOS menu system. No mouse is needed and IMenu supports EGA, VGA and Hercules. An 8088 (PC/XT) version is available. * IDir ---- IDir gives you point-and-shoot icon file deletion so you can keep track of icons easily. * ISetCRC, IStrip, and ICheck --------------------------- For managing icons, these utilities help track down duplicates by using a CRC value to find identical icons.
