 *** Please support all licenseware schemes and shareware authors.
     A lot of hard work goes into producing licenseware and shareware
     programs and a lot of these programs are better than many commercial
     programs of the same type , failure to do so will mean that many
     software authors will quite simply not bother to produce any more
     software if they are not being rewarded for all their hard work,
     time and trouble.

 Please read SHAREWARE scheme file for more details.

 Okay that's the public announcement over , now for the instructions...

 Enhancements since V1.0
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Unfortunately , V1.0 had a few slight bugs. These have all been fixed.
 Enhancements :-
 - Suggestions for word weren't very close to word you were finding
   suggestions for in V1.0.
   (The suggestion option now generally brings up less suggestion , but those
    it does bring up are much closer to the word you are finding suggestions
    for.)
 - You are now given the chance to select a dictionary if the default one
   cannot be found.
 - Load dictionary option
 - More of a Workbench 2.0 look to the program.
 - Can now edit dictionary.
 - Anagram option brings up the Scrabble (TM) score for the word.
 - Both anagram and crossword options have been speeded up considerably
   and can now display enough words to fill the screen instead of 100 as
   before.
 - Now recognizes PowerPacked & binary files.
 - New easy to use file requester
 - Can now handle much larger dictionaries (Estimated upto 210,000 words!)
 - Word Analysis screen now gives mean and mode average word lengths.
 - Comes complete with a huge 11,500+ word dictionary.
 - New Ignore option stops unknown words being missed every time.
 - New Replace all option replaces all occurances of a misspelt word.
 Introduction
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Before I start the main instructions I would just like to point out that
 if you find any spelling errors in this document then this is because due
 to release deadlines there wasn`t time to spell check these instructions.

    Being a person that is rather hard up for cash (no violins please) I do
 not own a word processor and so produce all letters, documents and
 instruction files (like this one) using an old text editor program called
 "Text Ed" , this program isn't bad for small files , but lacks one important
 feature that I and no doubt quite a few other people need : spell checking.

    Despite not being too bad at spelling , spelling errors certainly don't
 go down well on things like C.V`s , important business letters etc. , so
 for this reason and for something to do on a rather dull and wet sunday
 (22nd September 1991) I started to write Word Power.

    I don't suppose that I am alone in the Amiga world , in not owning a
 word processor with a decent spell checker , but even if you do own such a
 program then Word Power has a few other tricks up it's sleeve that sets it
 apart from the competition (read on...)

 What is Word Power ?
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Word Power is a spell checker that also uses it's database of words for
 a few things, other than just spell checking. Word Power V1.3 will :-
      i) - Spell check documents
     ii) - solve crosswords
    iii) - solve anagrams
     iv) - help you with words in scrabble (TM)
 Not only that but Word Power is also rather fun to use!!
 MAIN INSTRUCTIONS
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    When Word-Power is first loaded it will try and load a dictionary , the
 dictionary depends upon the default dictionary name in the OPTIONS.

 If the default dictionary cannot be found then you will be presented with a
 file requester that will ask you to select a dictionary to load. Dictionaries
 should have a ".dict" extension on the main filename so that you can tell
 them from other files on the disk unless of course that is not part of the
 default dictionary name that you have set for your own dictionary.

 The lower display bar tells you the number of words that are in memory.

 Main menu
~~~~~~~~~~~
                1)  Options               2)  Word Analysis
                3)  Spell Check           4)  Teach sentence
                5)  Solve Anagram         6)  Solve Crossword
                7)  Load dictionary       8)  Save dictionary
                9)  Edit dictionary      10)  Quit
 [1] Options
 ~~~~~~~~~~~

    1) Default dictionary name
    2) Highlight words
    3) Clear ignored words after spell checking.

 1) When you click this option you can edit the name of the dictionary that
    will automatically be loaded each time you load Word Power and everytime
    you save the dictionary (i.e The default dictionary name).
    The default name is "SYS:WP.dict"
    ("SYS:" being the device that you booted up from , probably DF0: , but it
     could be DF1: , DH0: etc.)

 2) Highlight words. This option simply lets you decide if you want unknown
    words highlighted while you are spell checking a document.
    The default is "Yes"

 3) Clear ignored words after spell checking. When you are spell checking a
    document you can ignore a word which will from then on be totally ignored
    if it is found again. This option allows you to choose whether you want
    the words you have ignored from one document to also be ignored on the
    next document.
    The default is "No"

 [2] Word analysis
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This sounds rather technical , but it isn't really. This option is not
 very useful , but is just a nice addition and is especially fun to use if
 you are creating your own dictionary.
 All it does is draw a bar chart showing the number of words containing ??
 letters in the loaded dictionary. Any words that are more than twenty
 letters in length are put into the 20 letter category , not that I can think
 of many words containing more than 20 letters.
 The mean and mode average word lengths are also displayed at the bottom
 of the screen.
 [3] Spell check document
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    This is the main feature of Word Power and thus is easily the most
 powerful.

 Firstly , you must choose a document to spell check.

 If a file is powerpacked or contains binary then Word-Power will recognize
 this and cancel spell-checking before any adverse effects are caused.

 If you use Word Power to spell check documents that you write from now on
 then you shouldn't have too many problems with attempting to spell check
 PowerPacked text files. If you do wish to spell check a PowerPacked text
 file then you will have to unpack it with PowerPacker , spell check it with
 Word Power and then re-pack it if necessary.

 Once you have selected a text file it will be loaded and checked line by
 line until the end of the file is reached.

 Working from the left each word that is unknown to the dictionary will be
 highlighted (if option selected) and mentioned at the bottom of the screen.
 The options now available to you for this word are:-

           Ignore - Ignores the current word. Click on ignore box or simply
                    click LEFT mouse button away from all buttons etc.

       Ignore all - totally ignores the word and all repetitions of this word.
                    Click on ignr.all box.

         Add word - this adds the current word to your dictionary.
                    Click on ADD WORD box or just press RIGHT mouse button
                    while not over an option box.

      Suggestions - this will give you a list of possible suggestions for the
                    word you meant to have put , click left button on UP and
                    DOWN boxes to move up and down the list if there are more
                    than three suggestions.

                    The word is also displayed above the suggestions , in
                    the "WORD BOX". Clicking the left button on this will let
                    you enter the correct word if it is not one of the
                    suggestions.

                    If you selected one of the suggestions it will be
                    copied into the WORD BOX so that you can edit it.

                    You now have three more options :-

                    1) Replace All - This will replace all occurances of
                                     the misspelt word with the word in the
                                     word box.

                    2) Replace - Just replaces the current misspelt word
                                 with the word in the word box.

                    3) Cancel - Does not replace any words. Returns to
                                main spell check menu.

 Cancel spell - Clicking this box or pressing "ESCAPE" will end spell
 check              checking.

 After spell checking a line the line will be scroll up and the next line
 will be loaded and displayed in its place.

 When you finish spell checking you have the option to either :-

      - Save the spell checked document.

      - Ignore the spell checking (This ignores any changes you have made to
        the document , but any words that have been added to the dictionary
        are NOT removed , and all ignored words are still remembered unless
        you have set this OPTION otherwise.)

 [4] Teach sentence
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 This allows you to teach the dictionary a sentence of words.
 Simply type in a line of words with spaces and each word will be spell
 checked. There are only two options you can choose for each word , those
 being :-
           Ignore word & Add word to dictionary.
 [5] Solve anagram
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 This option solves anagrams.(surprise , surprise !)

 Enter the word you wish to find all the anagrams of and then wait a few
 seconds before all the anagrams of the word you have entered will be found.
 (i.e "kids" is an anagram of "disk" , it uses the same letters.)

 The scrabble (TM) score for the word is also shown to right.

 While the dictionary is being searched, the search can be stopped by
 clicking the left mouse button.

 After each search you can try again or return to main menu.

 [6] Solve crossword
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 If you are keen on crosswords then this option is for you.
 Enter the word you wish to find , but replace any letters that you do not
 know with question marks (?) (i.e   ??s?? will find all five letter words
 which have the letter "s" as the third letter eg. RESET , LISTS etc.)
 While the dictionary is being searched, the search can be stopped by
 clicking the left mouse button.
 After each search you can try again or return to the main menu.
 [7] Load dictionary
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 This allows you to load any Word Power compatible dictionary.
 Select the dictionary with the file requester.

 NOTE : If you do not have a disk in a drive you will not get a button
        to select for this device.

 [8] Save dictionary
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 This allows you to save your dictionary under any filename , but it
 should end with .DICT so that Word Power can recognise it when it comes
 to load it back in.
 [9] Edit dictionary
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    This allows you to delete a word from your dictionary that you have
 accepted by mistake. You must enter the word with question marks in the
 place of the unknown letters like the crossword solve option. Or at the
 very least a number of question marks (?) that matches the number of letters
 in the word.

 All the above does is displays the words like the one you have entered so
 you can see if bad word exists. If you already know the word or you have
 just found it by using the above process , then you can enter the word to
 be deleted. If you don't wish to delete a word then just press [RETURN] when
 you are asked for the word to delete.

 [10] Quit
 ~~~~~~~~~
     Before you quit you get the option to save your dictionary , and are
 asked if you really wish to quit and then you are returned back to the
 place from which you ran Word Power - Cli , Workbench etc.
 The DICTIONARY
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 The small included 2,500+ word dictionary is a small dictionary to get you
 started. If you register as a Word Power user (read Shareware scheme file)
 you will receive many benefits including a new version of Word Power
 that includes an 11,500+ word dictionary.

 If you have created a dictionary for Word-Power that contains quite a
 reasonable number of words (ie. 20,000+) and you would like to help any
 other Word-Power owners out there as well as receive credit for the
 dictionary and gain something out of it , then send your Word-Power
 dictionary to me and I will either include it with future versions of
 Word Power or release it into public domain with your permission of course.

 Other languages
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Of course , you don't have to just teach Word Power English what about
 Welsh , French , German , Spanish , Italian  etc.   Word Power will cope
 with most languages except for languages such as Russian , Japanese etc.
 Okay , so all of the instructions are in English , but if either you or
 someone else in you family is bilingual then you shouldn't have too many
 problems in teaching Word Power a foreign language.
 If you have a dictionary created on Word Power in another language then I
 would be very happy to see it , just send me the disk with a copy of your
 foreign dictionary on it.
 If you give permission or would like to do it yourself then the disk could
 be released into Public Domain.
 *  A full instruction manual is available for only 2.00 (Sterling)
 (Me) Steven Rennocks
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Word Power is just one of hundreds of programs that I have written using
 AMOS+compiler and many other languages including AmigaBasic! & C.

 I enjoy producing commercial quality productivity software , such as

 PowerBase , Power-Planner & Word Power

 and top class games such as Formula One Challenge , Spectra and All-Square.

 I mainly write all of my products including Formula One Challenge ,
 PowerBase , Power-Planner , Word Power for my own use because no commercial
 title is available that suits my needs or if it is, it costs an awful lot
 more than I a poor penniless student can afford.

 At the time of writing this I am 17 and studying my `A` levels , but I
 will continue to produce quality software for the Amiga.

 I would gratefully consider any offers of work (freelance , part time etc.),
 if anyone likes the programs that I have produced.
