******************* * * * MOUSE TOOLS * * V1.0(12/4/90) * * * * Written by: * * Anthony Dervish * * * ******************* INTRODUCTION ============ The mouse supplied with the ST has an annoying tendency to take up acres of desk space due to it being of a relatively low resolution. This can lead to the user, mouse in hand, having to make strange pawing motions against the desk in order to move the cursor from one edge of the screen to another. MAJOR CHARACTERISTIC -------------------- Also the linear characteristic of the mouse (cursor displacement directly proportional to hand movement) is not necessarily the most comfortable. The best arrangement would seem to be a combination of pixel-fine resolution when the mouse is moving slowly, and much larger steps when you want to cover larger areas of screen. A quadratic characteristic seems preferable, and is possible with this accessory. VELOCITY FACTOR --------------- For times when extemely fine control of the cursor is not as important as speed, I have also included the choice of multiple pixel movement. This option works in quadratic or linear mode, and simply multiplies all movements by a specified factor (1X,2X or 3X). DIRECTION MODE -------------- Lastly, I have found that reversing all mouse motions can have quite useful effects. Especially when a brain-frazzled arcade addict turns to the finer art of flight simulation. The simulator invariably attempts to give the feel of a joystick by making the craft turn in an opposite direction to that of the motion of the mouse (e.g. 'Pulling back' on the mouse will cause the 'plane to soar skywards). Thus, I have included this option for uncoordinated people like me. USING THE PROGRAM: ================== Using the program is extemely simple. Install it as an accessory in the usual way, and immediately you should see the change in mouse movement. To configure your own mouse settings, choose the 'Mouse Tools' item from the desk menu. After passing the title alert box the following option alerts will appear: Title Options Default _______________________________________________________ 1| MAJOR CHARACTERISTIC | QUADRATIC OR LINEAR | QUADRATIC 2| VELOCITY FACTOR | 1X,2X OR 3X | 1X 3| DIRECTION MODE | NORMAL OR REVERSED | NORMAL Each one is explained above. Initially then, the only noticable change will be the quadratic characteristic of the mouse as opposed to the normal linear response.
