Introduction

In  order to understand how to use  TYPEWRIT.ACC  from 
RUBICON  SOFTWARE,  it is necessary to know  a  little 
about the GEM environment on the 520/1040 ST.  Certain 
programs  can be loaded at inital startup  (BOOT  UP), 
and these programs remain resident in memory until you 
turn the system off or RE-BOOT the system.  TOS  looks 
for  programs  ending in .ACC for  these  ACCessories. 
When  Atari  first released the ST line,  TOS  was  on 
disk,  and all ACCessories had to be named  DESK1.ACC, 
DESK2.ACC etc. When TOS was placed in Read Only Memory 
(ROM) chips,  this convention was changed to allow any 
main  name  with  an  ACC  extender,   so  instead  of 
DESK1.ACC  you could actually  say  TYPEWRIT.ACC.  The 
accessory on this disk is named TYPEWRIT.ACC.  If  you 
still  have TOS on disk and NOT in  ROM,  then  rename 
this  ACCessory to DESKN.ACC,  where N is some  number 
not currently being used on your BOOT disk.

How To Use The Typewriter

Place this accessory on your BOOT disk, or TOS disk if 
still  on disk,  and turn on the  computer.  When  the 
start-up  is  completed you will see the  normal  Menu 
items at the top of your screen.  If you point to  the 
Desk menu,  you will now see another accessory  called 
TYPEWRIT.  Just select this item by pointing to it and 
double  clicking  the  left  mouse   button.   (Double 
clicking  refers to TWO QUICK clicks in a  row.)  This 
will  give you a clear screen with two  cursor  marks. 
One  in the upper left corner,  and one positioned  in 
the approximate middle of the screen. These are only a 
convienience for addressing envelopes.  They mark  the 
Return  address area and the Mailing address area  for 
legal size envelopes.

Just start typing your line of text.  As you type  the 
letters appear on the screen,  and you can back  space 
for corrections until you reach the end of the line or 
you  press the Return key.  Once you press the  return 
key,  the line of text is typed to your printer, and a 
line feed is issued to begin the next line of text.

The TYPEWRIT ACCessory can be used for correspondence, 
short memos, addressing envelopes, just about anything 
an ordinary typewriter can be used for.

There  is  one added feature  that  typewriters  don't 
necessarily  have,  if your printer can display  other 
type fonts (Elite,  compressed, etc.) you can send the 
special characters to turn these functions on and off. 
My  Epson  (tm) can print compressed  if  it  receives 
Control-O, (Press and hold the Control key, then press 
the  O key).  By entering this in the TYPEWRIT  I  can 
turn on the compressed mode so my return address is in 
a smaller mode than the Mailing address.  To turn  off 
this mode, I merely type Control-R (Press and hold the 
Control key,  then press the R key). The same thing is 
true for all Control-X characters.  You can also  send 
an ESCape sequence to the printer,  just press the Esc 
key  (upper left of the keyboard),  and the series  of 
letters/numbers needed for the complete sequence. Just 
remember,  to EXIT the ESCape mode,  you need to press 
Esc  at  the end.  If you fail to press Esc  a  second 
time,  each  character as you type it is sent  to  the 
printer and you could wind up with some strange output 
on your printer.

How To End Using The ACCessory

This is easy,  just click on the upper left corner  of 
the TYPEWRIT window.  There is an oval there with an X 
through it. Just point and double click. The accessory 
window will close,  and you will be back to either the 
Desk  Top,  or  the program you  were  running  before 
activating the typewriter accessory.
