Testing was completed on a standard IBM XT and IBM AT, each with 512 KB. .h1;CHANGING PASSWORDS ON A 3SERVER For security, passwords are encrypted and cannot be decrypted. If a password is forgotten or lost, you can use 3DEBUG to remove the old password from the USERS file; then create a new password using the EtherSeries "ES MOD" command. To remove a password: 1. Turn the thumbwheel on the 3Server to setting 4 and reboot the 3Server. On this setting, the 3Server will display the server's Ethernet address and wait for boot service from a user PC. 2. At a user node with the System Software diskette in drive A:, type: A>ECONSOLE/START 3. Upon receipt of the correct Ethernet address, type 'Y' to boot the 3Server over the network. Once the message "REMOTE ACTIVE" appears on the 3Server LCD, type a carriage return and wait for the prompt, "A>>". 4. Upon getting the "A>>" prompt, switch to "C>>" and the subdirectory "ETHERSHR" by typing: A>>C: C>>CD ETHERSHR 5. Next, save a copy of the original file in case of errors: C>>COPY USERS USERS.OLD 6. To locate a password, find the first character of the name in the ASCII table; find the matching hex byte; call that "O" and count to the 11th position. This is the first character of the encrypted password and must be set to zero to clear the password. Example For the user LUTTER above, the user name starts at location 12DF:01c8. Counting 11, we get to 12DF:O1D3 (data byte:41). The encryped password reads AW@M'gE. To clear it, type -E 0 1 D3 41,00 < RETURN > [to enter the new data byte] -W [to write out the changed filel -Q [to quit back to DOS] If you make a mistake, exit with "Q" (this keeps the file from being written out). - Q and re-edit the file by retyping: C>>3DEBUG USERS ONLY IF you make a mistake and the file has already been written out, copy the old version, " USERS.OLD" back to "USERS" by typing: C > > COPY USERS.OLD USERS and re - edit using 3DEBUG above. 7. Reset the thumbwheel switch setting to 0 and reboot the 3Server. It will come up serving and the user whose entry was changed in the USERS file will no longer have a password. .h1;3SERVER LOCAL CONSOLE CONFIGURATION The locale console of a 3Server must be configured as specified below: 9600 baud EVEN Parity 7 data bits and 1 stop bit Pins 2, 3, 7 should be used; and pins 2 and 3 are crossed. For a more detailed explanation see the 3Server Administrator's Guide, Introductory Section, Appendix B, page B - 7. The terminal should not be using any modem functions and should be configured only for pins 2, 3, 7. The manual outlines other signals which are available, but if someone is having a problem, it is best to begin with this minimum configuration. If the configuration is not correct, the following symptoms may appear: POOR SCREEN FORMAT: Characters will appear on the screen but all over the place, not nice and neat the way we like it. INABILITY TO RECOGNIZE ALL KEYBOARD CHARACTERS: A 3 might be recognized but a 1 or 2 will not, and the user cannot make those selections on the admin menus. NO APPARENT CONNECTION AT ALL: No response from the 3Server when LCONSOLE is typed .h1;3SERVER HELPFUL HINTS Only copies of the System Software Diskette using "DISKCOPY" will work properly when using "ECONSOLE/START" as the booting process requires the bootstrap. The bootstrap will not get copied using "COPY *.*". ECONSOLE works only from a user PC, and not from a server. You CANNOT use the same tape for full and incremental backups. Only empty tapes can be used for full backups. You CANNOT back up a volume at a time; you CAN restore a volume at a time.
