This release memo describes the procedure for copying the software and lists the new features, fixed bugs, and limitations in SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000. .h1;Compatibility SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 operates with the following 3Com products and software releases: CS/1 running SW/1-A/BSC/SDLC Version 20060 or later IB/3 running SW/20-IB Version 11000 or later NCS/150 running SW/150-NCS Version 10010 or later NCS/AT running SW/AT-NCS Version 11000 or later The following table illustrates the hardware and firmware compatibility requirements of SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000. Whenever a command is referenced in this release memo, assume that the Return key should be pressed after you type each command. .h1;Copying the Software Before you run SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 on the CS/210, make a copy of the distribution diskette using the following procedure: 1. Attach a terminal to port 0 of the CS/210. 2. Make sure that there is no diskette in the disk drive. Then power on the CS/210. The Self Test LED turns on. 3. After the Self Test LED turns off, the Boot State LED lights briefly. After the Boot State LED turns off, the Self Test LED flashes on and off. Press the hardware interrupt switch on the CS/210. For further information on the location and operation of the hardware interrupt switch, refer to Section 2 of the Series/200 Installation Guide. 4. Press the Return key. The monitor prompt (>) appears. 5. Perform firmware configuration on the CS/210 if necessary. Otherwise, go on to the next step. Refer to Section 3.8 of the Series/200 Installation Guide for further information on firmware configuration. After you perform firmware configuration, return to the monitor prompt (>). 6. At the monitor prompt (>), type the following command to make a copy of the distribution diskette. co where n is the number of copies to be made. The following message appears on the screen: insert master and hit the Return key 7. Insert the SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 distribution diskette in the disk drive. Then press the Return key. The following messages appear on the screen if the read completes successfully: reading ... OK insert copy 1 and hit the Return key In the actual display, the number in the message may vary according to the number of copies you have made. If the message "read error" appears instead of the message "OK", contact an authorized 3Com service representative for help. 8. Remove the SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 distribution diskette from the disk drive, and store it in a safe place. Insert a blank, 135 TIP, double-sided, double-density, 3 1/2- inch diskette in the disk drive. Then press the Return key. If the copy completes successfully, the following messages appear on the screen: formatting ... writing ... verifying ... OK copy completed. 9. Remove the diskette from the disk drive, and label it "SW/200- A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000." You can now use the newly made copy of SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 on your CS/210. After you install the software, you will have to define the global parameters, clearinghouse names, macros, and port configurations. ** NOTE ** If you use the configurations, macros, and global files copies from a previous version of SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC, you must use the SETD command to set the value of teh AUditTrailType, TimeZone, DaylightSavingsTime, NetMapBroadcast, and MacType parameters after booting the CS/210. .h1;Sysgen System generation can be performed on the CS/210 running SW/200-A/ BSC/SDLC Version 22000. The Sysgen parameters and default values for the CS/210 are the same as for the CS/200. Refer to the sections on the CS/200 in the Configuration Guide (February 1988 edition) for further information on the Sysgen program. To start the Sysgen program, follow these steps: 1. Attach a terminal to port 0 on the CS/210. 2. Make sure that there is no diskette in the disk drive on the CS/210, and then power on the CS/210. The Self Test LED turns on. 3. After the Self Test LED turns off, the Boot State LED lights briefly. After the Boot State LED turns off, the Self Test LED flashes on and off. Press the hardware interrupt switch on the CS/210. For further information on the location and operations of the hardware interrupt switch, refer to Section 2 of the Series/200 Installation Guide. 4. Press the Return key. Then the monitor prompt (>) appears. 5. Perform firward configuration if necessary. Otherwise, go on to the next step. Refer to Section 3.8 of the Series 200/ Installation Guide for further information on firmware configuration. After you perform firmware configuration, return to the monitor prompt (>). 6. Insert in the disk drive the SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 diskette that you created in the software copy procedure. 7. At the Monitor prompt (>), type the following command to invoke the Sysgen program: bt 1d The Sysgen program is invoked, and the Main Menu is displayed. Refer to the Configuration Guide for further information on the Sysgen program. .h1;New Features SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 includes the new features described below. These features were not available in previous versions of CS/200 software. Because these features were first supported in TCP/IP software Version 20000, the Connection Service User's Guide states that they are available only in TCP/IP protocol software Version 20000 or later. Please disregard these statements when referring to this guide for further information on these features. * You can define macros containing conditional statements. * The ZeroMacros command, which clears the contents of the macro cache on the local server, is now available. * Universal Time is now available for network communications spanning different time zones. Two new global parameters have been implemented to support this feature. The DaylightSavingTime parameter specifies the displacement, in hours or minutes, from non-Daylight Savings Time. The TimeZone parameter specifies in hours or minutes how far west the server is from Greenwich. The NCS/150 does not yet support this feature. * A new global parameter, AUditTrailType, is available. This parameter specifies the format of the time-stamp for audit trail messages. The two formats are Local time and Universal time. * A new parameters, NetMapBroadcast, has been added. This parameter, which can be set to ON or OFF, determines whether the Series/200 server broadcasts its netmap packets. * A new parameter, MacType, has been added. Its possible values are IEEE and Enet. This parameter determines the type of Media Access Control level protocol to be used. If this parameter is set to Enet, all data link packets are sent as Ethernet packets. If it is set to IEEE, all data link packets are sent as IEEE 802.3 packets. In addition to the features described above, SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC- NCS/150 Version 22000 has the following new features, which are not described in the Connection Service User's Guide: * A new Connection Service command, PIng, enables you to determine whether a specified host is operating without having to form a connection to the host. This command uses the ECHO protocol to send echo request packets to the specified address. The following is the syntax for the PIng command: PIng [] You may specify a physical address or a clearinghouse name. the timeout value specifies the length of time in seconds that the Series/200 server waits for a response from the addressed host. The default timeout value is 20 seconds, and the maximum timeout value is 300 seconds (five minutes). All Communications Servers running XNS protocol software versions that support the PIng command respond to the echo request by sending an echo response packet. If the host responds within the specified timeout period, the message "Host is alive" is displayed. If the host does not respond within this period, the message "Host is not responding" is displayed. To interrupt the PIng command, press the Break key. * The CS/210 firmware can be figured so that the CS/210 is booted from a local diskeete or a Network Control Server. The boot source determines the origin of the macros, configurations, and global parameters. For more information on firmware configuration, refer to the Series/200 Installation Guide. SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 runs on a CS/210 that is booted from a local diskette. Macros, configurations, and global parameters can also be stored on and retrieved from the local diskette. * The SHow AllSessions command, which displays a list of all physical ports on the Cs/210, now also shows the originating address of a connection when it is a passive-end connection or an interconnection. * When a Data General terminal port receives a host-initiated break signal, the CS/200 server terminates any pending flow control to that port. * When the ECMChar parameter on a Data General terminal is set to a character, the DLE character is processed. When the ECMChar parameter is disabled, the DLE character is passed as data. .h1;Bugs Fixed Certain problems, which existed in previous versions of CS/200 software, have been fixed in SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000. These problems and their resolutions are described below. * The audit trail record code for excessive retransmission, ER, is now sent to a Network Control Server if the SPP retransmission count exceeds 200 within an hour. Previously, this information was not recorded on the NCS because the SPP retransmission count failed to exceed zero, regardless of the number of actual SPP retransmission. * The ReaD command now works properly for the port configured as the last virtual port on the CS/210. Previously, this command replaced the in-memory default parameters of the last virtual port with those from a specified file on the system diskette, but failed to automatically copy the new in-memory parameter * The Sysgen parameter, SPP Minimum Window Size, can now be set to all of its possible values. Previously, it could not be set to 2 or 1. * Previously, if the FlowControlFrom and FlowControlTo parameters were both set to None, resetting one of the parameters to Xon_Xoff or ENQ_ACK caused the other to be automatically set to Xon_Xoff or ENQ_ACK. This problem has been corrected and the FlowControlFrom and FlowControlTo parameters can be set independently. * SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 attempts to establish connections to permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) according to the order in which the connection requests are received. Previously, priority was always given to the attempt to connect to the lowest-numbered PVC. * The StopBits parameter can now be set to any of its possible values. Previously, if you attempted to set this parameter to 1.5, the screen displayed an error message. * The optional parameter, (
), is now included in the syntax of all commands displayed in the Global Network Manager help menu. Previously, this was omitted from some commands in the display. For example, the syntax for the UNSave command is now displayed in the Global Network Manager help menu as follows: UNSave (
) * You can now define a permanent virtual circuit using a combination of a clearinghouse name and a port number. The address string specifying the clearinghouse name and port number must not contain more than 12 characters. For example, the following command defines a permanent virtual circuit form port 25 on the source server to the address "host7!128": SETD (!25) pvc = "host7!128" * Previously, if the value of the ECHOMask parameter included control characters, some characters (e.g., backspace) did not function normally in Command mode. This problem has been corrected. * The X.25 host no longer hangs when you type the following commands to initiate a connection from a Series/200 server to the host across a GS/1-X.25: Connect ECM RES When you enter the RESume command, the Series/200 server sends back the response to the "read parameter" packet from the X.25 host, and your terminal successfully enters Data Transfer mode. * The global-network-manager form of the SHow STATistics -S command now displays correct error statistics for the network. Previously, this command always displayed zero errors. .h1;Limitations SW/200-A/BSC/SDLC Version 22000 has the following limitation: * Only three echo requests may be outstanding at any given time.
