All rights reserved. .br;GS/1-IP MCPU20 Firmware Configuration MCPU20 firmware configuration applies only to the GS/a-IP. The GS/a-X.25, GS/3, and GS/3-IP do not contain an MCPU20 board, having instead an MCPU board. Firmware configuration is used to modify various parameters, such as automatic reboot, console (monitor) port baud rate, and auxiliary port baud rate, stored in EEPROM. MCPU20 firmware is preset at the factory for the majority of installations and probably does not need to be reconfigured. This section describes changes that can be made, if necessary. The modifications are performed from a terminal attached to your GS/1-IP's console port. To configure the firmware, follow these steps: 1. Attach a terminal to the console port of your GS/1-IP, and power the terminal on. 2. Power on the GS/1-IP, or, if it is already powered on, press the Reset switch. 3. Press the Return key. A display similar to the following appears: Series/1 Power-up MCPU20 - Passed M3 MMON rev 0 - IEC/M 512KB - Passed Station Address - 08002xxxxxx M1 IECM rev. xxx 1 - SIO - passed M1 SYNC rev xxx 2 - Not Present 3 - Not Present 4 - Not Present Bridge Communications MCPU20 Monitor > The twelve-digit number, respresented by 080002xxxxxx above, is the GS/1-IP's Ethernet address. Firmware configuration is part of a program, known as the monitor, built into the MCPU20's firmware. The last two lines are a welcome message from the monitor, indicating that the GS/1-IP is in monitor mode. The angle bracket (">") indicates that the monitor is ready to accept monitor commands. 4. At the angle-bracket prompt, enter the following command and press the Return key: fc 5. The following menu appears: Firmware Configuration Utility Commands: C - Change parameters D - Display parameters E - Exit to monitor ? These commands have the following functions: C Alters current parameters. D Displays the current parameter settings. E Returns to the monitor prompt (>). 6. To change any of the configuration parameters, select C. The following parameters are displayed, with their current settings: Current Parameters; 0. Console baud rate: 9600 1. Auxiliary baud rate: 9600 2. Auto-reboot: Reboot only 3. Initial boot source: Auto 4. Number of reboots: 00 5. Network boot string: _cs1 6. Drive type: 96 tpi Q. Previous menu Select parameter ? Each of these parameters is described below. To modify a parameter: a. Press the number corresponding to the parameter you wish to modify. Do not press the Return key. b. The choices available for the parameters are displayed. Make your selection. c. The new value is entered next to the parameter name, and the list of parameters is redisplayed. To return to the Firmware Configurations Utility menu, press Q. If you press an incorrect key, the message "Illegal parameter" appears, and the choices are redisplayed. d. Select E to return to the monitor prompt shown in step 3. 7. For the new parameters to take effect, press the Reset switch. The firmware configuration parameters are described below: Port Baud Rates These parameters set the baud rates for the console and auxiliary ports. The default rate for both is 9600. The baud rate can be set to 110, 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 19200, or 38400 bps. Databits is always set to 8 and parity to none. The console baud rate must be greater than or equal to the auxiliary rate. If you select an incorrect setting, the message "Auxiliary rate must be less than console rate" appears, and the parameter listing is redisplayed. Automatic Reboot If an error or exception condition occurs, the GS reboots if this parameter is set to "r" (Reboot only) or boots to the monitor if it is set to "m" (Boot monitor). The Boot monitor setting prevents the GS from rebooting, thereby allowing you to take a memory dump. Making a memory dump is described in the Network Management Guide. Initial Boot Source The four options for the initial source parameter are "m" (Monitor), "f" (Floppy), "n" (Network), and "a" (Automatic). On GSs, this parameter should be set to Floppy. When the initial boot source is set to Floppy, the GS attempts to boot from its floppy diskette. When the initial boot source is set to Monitor, the GS enters monitor mode after passing the self-test and waits for you to enter Monitor commands. Setting the initial boot source to Network is no applicable to a GS. Number of Reboots If a fatal exception or internal software error occurs, the GS increments a reboots counter by one. This parameter displays the current value of this counter. To set the counter back to zero, set it to "R" (reset). Network Boot String This parameter is used by servers that can boot from an NCS. It is not applicable to a GS. Drive Type Both 96-tpi and 48-tpi disk drivers are supported, although the GS/1-IP uses only a 96-tpi drive. The 96-tpi drives have labels affixed to their front to assist in identification.
