Release Notes

This document contains information about the 3+Open Start service.
Read this information carefully before installing your 3+Open Start
software.

The release notes are divided into two sections:

PC server notes
3Com  server notes

Some notes apply to both PC and 3Com servers.  These notes appear in
both sections.  Subheadings are provided within each section to assist
you in finding information.

.H1;For PC Server

.BR;Installation
.BR;Before installing the Start software, you must install the Update
diskette.  Use the following procedure to accomplish this.

1. Start your PC.

2. Insert the Update diskette into a drive.

3. Change your drive, if necessary, to the drive containing the Update
diskette.

For example, if the diskette is in drive a:, type the following to
change your drive designation

a:


4. Type 3SIS to start the installation program.

5. Select Install from the menu of actions.

3SIS copies the software from the Update diskette to the PC server

After you install this software, use the procedure in Chapter 2 of the
3+Open Start Guide  to install and enable the 3+Open Start software.

.BR;Enabling 3+Open Start
.BR;After you install 3+Open Start, you must use the 3SIS ENABLE command
to run the program.

You must check whether or not the service was enabled after the ENABLE
command finishes.  Type the following command to list the enabled
services.

net start

Check the list for 3Start.  If 3Start is not listed, type:

net error

to list the error messages returned during the Start initialization.
Read the messages to determine the cause of the problem.

Once you install and enable 3+Open Start, it runs automatically each
time you boot the server.

.BR;Removing 3+Open Start
.BR;When you use 3SIS to remove 3+Open Start, wait about 30 seconds after
disabling the service before you remove it.  This gives 3SIS the
necessary time to stop the service (for example, close all files).

.BR;Protocol Support
.BR;3+Open Start currently only supports servers running the XNS protocol.

.BR;Security
.BR;Currently, users can modify or delete Start volumes only if they have
admin access to the Startdir sharename.  In subsequent releases, the
3S utility program will control access.

.H1;For 3Com Server

.BR;Installing and Enabling 3+Open Start
.BR;3+Open Start is automatically installed and enabled when you load the
software from the tape to your server.  Once you install the servers
on your network, disable 3+Open Start on all but one of your servers.
3+Open Start can only run on one server on a network.

.BR;Verifying Installation
.BR;Once you install the 3+Open software from the tape, you must verify
that 3+Open Start was installed and enabled without error.  Use the
following procedure to accomplish this.

1. Make sure that the Net Run program is enabled.

Type the command

net admin \\servername

where servername is the name of the server on which you want to run
Net Run.  Select Server options from the Config menu.  If the box next
to Net Run has an X in it, the program is enabled.  If the box is
blank, highlight the Net Run program name, t
hen press [Space bar].

You must run the Net Run program from a drive that is linked to the
server you want to verify.

2. Type the following command to verify that no errors occurred during
3+Open Start initialization.

net run lastboot /2

3. Type the following command to verify that 3+Open Start is enabled.

net run net start

4. If 3Start is not listed, type the following command to list the
error messages that will help you determine why the service is not
enabled.

net run net error

.BR;Removing 3+Open Start
.BR;Do not remove 3+Open Start once it is installed.  If you do remove it,
there is no way to restore the service without reinstalling all the
server software from tape.

.BR;Protocol Support
.BR;3+Open Start currently only supports servers running the XNS protocol.
