Title: Troubleshooting a 3+Open DOS Remote Netstation

If you have a 3+Open DOS LAN Manager Remote Netstation diskette and
it does not work when signing on to a 3+Open Internet server,
answer the following questions to check for the cause of the problem.

1. Was the netstation diskette made from NETSETUP on a 3+Open 1.0 server
(NOT 3+Open 1.1)?

2. Was ETH.SYS changed to RPC.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS (or CONFIG.OS2) file?

3. Was DEVICE= ... PRO.SYS 12 20 2 changed to PRO.SYS 12 2 2 in the
CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.OS2 file?  (This will not prevent it from working but
will affect performance.)

4. Are the following files on the diskette?
   A. 3R.EXE and PROFILE.SYS from a 3+ Remote diskette
   B. RPC.SYS from the Internet server

5. Does the AUTOEXEC.BAT file have the 3R statement before the RUNMINDS
statement?

6. Do the SET statements at the beginning of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file have the
correct server name, user name, and security, or are they blank so NET LOGON
commands will prompt for them?

7. Is the PROFILE.SYS file set up as follows?
   A. LINE1= The phone number to be called.  (Include the
      preceding 1 if required.)
   B. SPEED= The baud rate at which the netstation will talk
      to the modem (not necessarily the baud rate that will go
      out on the phone line).
   C. MODEM= The modem type expected by PRO.SYS (HAYES24, HAYES12,
      TB192, TB96, HAYESV96, etc.)
   D. TIMEOUT= Set this to 15.
   E. NETWORK= The network number of this netstation, which MUST
      be different from the network being called.

8. Are you using the correct modem cable?
   A. Most modems require a 25-pin straight through.
   B. Null requires a cable as per internet manual page D-10.

9. Is the server set up correctly, according to the procedure below?
   A. Use 3ICM ADMIN.
   B. Under Config Networks:
      1. Mark "Is this a partial list" = yes.
      2. Mark the direction as "both."
      3. No password for testing.
   B. Under Config Comm Ports:
      1. Make sure the comm port, modem type, and speed are set
         correctly.
      2. Mark the direction as "both."
      3. Use a modem type from the Config Modems list.  If the
         modem type you need is not in the list then make a new
         one and use it in the Config Comm Ports menu.

10. Are you administering the correct server?

11. Is the internet server running XNS as the primary protocol?  Otherwise,
you will get a "Network name not found" error message.

12. Do you have one and only one network number on the network?  See the
Internet release notes for the proper configuration.
