This article describes how to internet an Irmalan gateway and
access the gateway through Netconnect from a remote netstation
using 3COM's 3NB utility.  This ability is unique to 3Com's
implementation of NetBIOS.  The procedure described below uses
the 3NB utility to register the local netstation's permanent name
in the remote Locator so the gateway can find it.  (Nothing needs
to be done to the gateway.)

Testing was done with DOS 3.3, 3+1.3.1 and Irmalan SDLC gateway
1.01.  "Network A," the remote network, had a 3S/201 server and a
Compaq 286 that was the Irmalan gateway.  "Network B," the local
network, had a 3S/401 server and an IBM XT that we want to access
the gateway on Network A.

On Network B, follow these steps:

1.  Use the Register command under 3NB to register the user on
the remote network.  From the USER'S netstation enter the
following information:

2.  Use the Use command under 3NB to add the gateway name to the
netstation's local table.  Enter the following commands on the
netstation:

       Remote Name?                     Forte_$GATEWAYS
       Fill Character?                  <cr>
       End Character?                   <cr>
       Group or Unique?                 /unique

        You must use Network A's network number so the
        netstation on Network B knows where to go.

If the 3NB Register and Use commands are not entered correctly
from Network B when trying to access the gateway, the following
error occurs:  "Waiting for host session to be established."
Then the status line shows "-+z_900."

After the application is done and you have ended the sessions,
remove the information from the existing Locator table on Network
A and Network B using the 3NB Clear command.  The 3NB Clear
command clears the names on the remote Locator and the local 3NB
table.  Use the same names you set up with the Register and Use
commands.

This process can be automated by creating a file with the
appropriate responses, then redirecting the file to the 3NB
utility.
