DeepBench Dion Vingerhoets May 94 Deep Bench doubles the height of the workbench screen giving a scrollable 512 line display without switching to interlaced mode or closing non-workbench windows. 1> DeepBench will activate the double height, 1> DeepBench again will restore to original size. (In other words, run once to double, run again to restore.) Scrolling the screen requires only the movement of the mouse to the top or bottom of the screen. If the lowwer part of the screen is visible and a menu is required, there is no need to move to the top. When the Menu button is pressed, the screen automatically jumps to display the menu. When the menu is released, the screen is placed where is originally was. Windows and icons can be dragged down to the bottom of the screen. Icons will need to have the workbench window resized. If you, like me, use a backdrop workbench, you will need to cancel the backdrop display and return to backdrop to resize the window properly. Restoring to a smaller size screen with windows or icons in the lowwer portion of the screen is okay. The windows are first moved up until they either fit onto the smaller screen or hit the title bar. If they are still too big then they are resized from the bottom up. Icons below the bottom of the screen will be popped up to sit at the bottom of the smaller window. Background: I created this program by toying with screen, window, rastport and such structures. I had intended to create a program which toggled workbench between normal HIRES and LACED HIRES. (I forgot the LACE flag :-) I was about to delete the program, source and all, when Nick happened by and saw what I was doing. 'Hey, that's great. How big is that?', he asked. I told him it was 344 bytes. He was amazed and told me about a program called BIGBENCH on one of the early FISH disks. He said it wasabout 9000 bytes long! I could not believe him till he showed me. And there it was. Amazing! After a few crashes, (lots and lots), I think I have a stable environment. Windows and icon placement are taken care of and different amounts of colors are not a worry. The only problem is with the cli. Resizing a shell window introduces garbage on the top line. This is due to the window only have had so much memory reserved for it. Opening a NEWSHELL con:0/0/640/512/title/CLOSE will cause no hassles. (I find that normal 640,256 shells have a habit of crashing if resized too much.) If anyone has found a way to crash DeepBench, other than by ignoring what I've just said, I would like to hear how you did it. Okay, so some people may be saying that it is possible to create a scrolling 512 height non-interlaced workbench screen from the 2.0 prefs program ScreenMode. That is right! But this program allows you to have the choice without having to "...close all windows except drawers." or load a prefs program and save you clicking on a few gadgets. You may say that it is a small price to pay. But I retort with, 'A 444 byte program is an even smaller price to pay!' Dion Vingerhoets 8 AYTON WAY DUNCRAIG WA 6023 PERTH WEST AUST.
