Shameless plug, Roy! My boss is painfully aware of the necessity of
retaining the magic blue smoke. He let it leak out of his monitor last week!
It's actually one of the more interesting cases I've seen, as one of his
power supply transistors fried a lead off, and blew a tiny hole right through
its casing! I'm surprised the capacitor in the circuit only "domed" instead
of popping its top.

You certainly can! One thing, though: If I'm not mistaken, the highest ROM

Sage words, indeed! I'd forgotten about that darned jumper! If you
experience problems (like not booting, etc.) let me know, as I have a file
here that tells how to add in a jumper (piece o' cake) to those muthaboards
which need it.

Hello Wolfgang (and anyone else over there in Europe!)

I am trying to locate an man that helped me while I was stationed near
Frankfurt. If you know him, or know of him I would appreciate hearing
what he is doing these days.

His name is Thomas Davis. A retired American married to a very nice German
woman and living near Frankfurt. He was an Amiga Hardware developer when I
knew him.

I would like to here from him again if anyone there knows him.

I can be reached at:

Richard L. Dawson

Summerville, SC 29485

Please ask him to drop me a line or two. Or he can just write to me
here<g>.

You have to copy disk.info to Ram: every boot. Create you Disk.info icon for
RamDisk and save it somewhere, then add "Copy <somewhere>Disk.info ram:" line
in S:user-startup file.

Mitsumi-FX400 *is* supported. The problem is atapi.device. Version 6.2 only

LZX, I don't remember), Atapi69.LHA , Atapi71.LHA . You need all three

Subj: RE: WHERE ARE YOU ALL?

In my view, most of the discussions of what make an "Amiga" an "Amiga" miss a
key factor. The hardware and the operating system appear to have been
designed to work well together. One wasn't designed in the absence of the
other.Look at the IBM and its clones: this is a machine in which hardware
reins supreme. Software and operating systems are almost an afterthought. The
hardware configuration was decided, and whatever software it takes to make it
work was added. Like an aging prostitute, adding enough layers of cosmetics
(software) almost makes the machine look desirable. If all the layers of
software make the machine too slow, bring out faster processors. Ignore the
fact that most of the machine cycles are necessary to hide the fact the
hardware and software aren't a good match. The Mac is an example of software
reigning supreme. It's no secret that the decision was made to implement the
Smalltalk environment on a personal computer. That's a reasonable goal, but
it does not mean that any of the available chip sets necessarily were a good
match to the environment. Macs also tend to be slower than they really need
to be, and the size of the software again partially reflects the mismatch
between software concept and chip set.Conversely, the Amiga used a
commercially available chip for general purpose processing, and added special
purpose processors for video, audio, and I/O. The system clock is geared
around video frequencies, and the interrupt system is designed to support
multitasking. It appears that the software designers and hardware designers
were in continual communication during implementation, and the two compliment
each other. The Amiga's design is now 10 years old, and may be getting a bit
creaky. We have seen fine tuning and upgrades to both hardware and software,
which still make the two function well together. There may be a point at
which the concept becomes outdated, and must have a major redesign. Let's
hope that any such effort designs the hardware and software together in at
least as synergistic a manner as we saw in the original Amiga. It should be
evident from the foregoing that I'm not a great fan of migrating Unix to the
Amiga. Unix is not necessarily bad, but I view it as another attempt to force
an environment on a machine for which the machine was never designed. If you
want Unix, go buy a Sun or an SGI (preferably the latter).

The Mitsumi 4X speed IS supported, if you mean the FX400. the triplespeed
FX300 should also work.

Maybe you used the wrong driver? There's an a4000 version in the devs drawer
from that archive, but also an a1200 version. Maybe if you use an A4000/030
instead of an A4000/040 you have to use the A1200 driver?

Oh, by the way, do you actually have a CD filesystem installed? Without one
the drive still doesn't work.. so you have to use this ATAPI driver AND the
CD filesystem. You could use the freely distributable Amicdrom from Frank
Munkert.

The ZIP-drive only uses special floppies, which have a 100mb capacity. It
isn't a diskdrive actually, but a removable. A floppy reads at about 20k per
second, the zip can reach a transfer speed of about 1.3mb per second. If you
try to stuff a normal (hd or dd) floppy into the ZIP I think you would damage
the floppy or the drive, which i hope would be the floppy, because floppies

Well, they have choosen the PowerPC route. That is sort of good and sort of
terrible. If they had gone with HP chip they would have gotten a much more
pwowerful machine with a more powerful 3D portion to Hombre. It would have
been nice to see another truly A1000 revolutionary machine. On the other
hand, with the PowerPC, IF it takes off, and all the latest IBM games and
apps start gettign writtern for it instead of Intel 80x86, then it would make
the Amiga PowerPC a very safe buy. 100% full speed emulation of both Mac AND
clones would then be possible and AmaigaDOS could also get out more. However,
going this route, the Amiga won't trounce other machines as much as it could
which is not good at all, and if most code stays Intel then this could turn
out to have been a very terrible decision indeed.

The new console really are much more powerful. Some have 16bit sound DSP, most
have at least some sort of RISC 3D rotation and texture mapping engine
(although most do it by panels instead of as out and out real solid 3D
objects), blitters radically faster than the CD32's, faster CPUs, larger
palettes, some, but not the Sony, have much better dualplayfield type modes,
all have better sprites. Some do lack some of the Amigas neat copeer tricks
and some lack register based modes, but still they pack a lot of power.

How is this positive?! A lack of games does not help sales (plus I don't
exactly dislike games myself), and sales are what we need.
And who cares about worrying about image. All the game image stuff was
a bunch of bull. When it suited IBM'ers to trash anything that could HANDLE
games, they did so, deriding them as plastic toys. Now, years later, when
they can actually support color gfx and have enough brute force to
do at least certain types of games at speed, they brag about being a games
 machine.

Don't get too harsh with them. That RIP wasn't exactly negative, plus
CBM DID go under. BYTE is the only mainstream magazine to have ever
consistently praise the Amiga. When the A1000 came out they even predicted
that it would take over the computing industry.

I'd use Lha as Smartplay can play arc'd modules. OTOH, if you register
EaglePlayer you can use XPK libraries. OTOOH, you could use Crunchmania to
pack your modules down. All you have to do then is have the Run Time Data
Decruncher (rtdd) in your startup somewhere. Everything will be invisible to
your system and Crunchmania gives the best compression while still leaving
the files usable.

On the other hand, wouldn't we all be choked if some author of a cool new

And...oh oh... We had all deleted LZX in favour of good old LHA!

I think I will keep a recent version of LZX handy...

Right off my Performa here. ShapeShifter supports many newer 1MB and
some 512K ROMs. The newer Macintoshes come with the one megger version,
except PowerMacs, which I think has some funky boot code in there, and not
all 68000 instructions either. I would think that the ROMs for the 4xx,
5xx and 6xx series are compatible with ShapeShifter. Copying the ROM off
a mac should be quick and painless, but YMMV of course.

Hi Dave!

DG> Multithreading differs from multitasking in that it allows groups

DG> address space with their own set of global variables.

Could be done with:

AddTask(&mytask,entrypoint,cleanup);

where "cleanup" would implement any resource deallocation needs.

DG> If a program in a thread fails the entire thread can be terminated
DG> and its resuorces returned to the resuorce pool.

And the "entrypoint" could be declared with __saveds to allow access to
global variables via A4. Variables could be declared as "volatile" if
they are modified by other threads ...

void __saveds entrypoint (void) {
    extern volatile int gNotSoImportantVariable;
}

All of this with the current Exec. Of course, you could take the more
complicated route and use SignalSemaphore to synchronize your tasks.
Hmm ... there are a couple of good and *cool* examples for the Mac
thread manager. Maybe I'll port them to the miggy. =^)

DG> Of course multithreading requires resource tracking and therefore
DG> isn't currently possible on the Amiga.

Why would multithreading require resource tracking?

DG> design of the Amiga's exec directly supports forks, joins, and
DG> semaphores, which are used to create and coordinate simultaneous
DG> processes in an internally multitasking system.

Right ... so, just because the Amiga doesn't call it "multithreading"
doesn't mean that multithreading can't be done on the Amiga. It's just
that the Amiga model is potentially a bit more complicated than other
models which don't support preemtive switching (or supported as option
that can be turned off)...

The Amiga model:
APTR AddTask(struct Task *, APTR initPC, APTR finalPC);
BYTE SetTaskPri(struct Task *,long priority);
void Forbid(void);
void Permit(void);
struct Task *FindTask(UBYTE *name);
void Signal(struct Task*,unsigned long signalSet);
void ObtainSemaphore(struct SignalSemaphore *sigSem);
void ReleaseSemaphore(struct SignalSemaphore *sigSem);

The Mac model:
OSErr NewThread(ThreadStyle,ThreadEntryProcPtr,void *,Size,{...});
OSErr YieldToThread(ThreadID suggestedThread);
OSErr YieldToAnyThread(void);
OSErr ThreadBeginCritical(void);
OSErr ThreadEndCritical(void);
OSErr GetCurrentThread(Thread *currentThreadID);
OSErr SetThreadState(ThreadID,ThreadState = {kReadyThreadState,
          kStoppedThreadState});

These are functions which roughly perform equivalent actions on their
respective platforms ... The Mac model tends to be more "meaty", by
providing distinct functions for just about any needs, while the Exec
model tends to be a bit skimpy on functions --- you'd have to string
together a couple of calls to do what you need.

Cheers!
Bill

Well, this might tick you off, but I'll risk it. =^)

Am I right in that:

The Archie OS is one sorry, brain-dead OS whose filesystem can only
accept 76 entries (files) per directory; the filenames can be 10 letters
long; directory seperator character is a period, which makes it h*ll to
use files from other platforms (imagine using .c and .h files, for one.

The graphics, while sufficiently cool, has no look-and-feel standard so
each program tends to have its own look, kinda like the 1.2 and such
(pre-GadTools/MUI).

What's so powerful about *that*?

*-------------------------------> Splitter <--------------------------------*
*----------------------> Version 1.21 on 11/25/1993 <-----------------------*
*--------------------------> by Martin Schlodder <--------------------------*

Splitter is a very small utility to split and join files. It is written in
ANSI C and thus completely portable to any system that has an ANSI C compiler.

 Usage: Splitter <file> [<spath>] [-j] [-p n] [-s n] [-d]

   file the file to split
spath optional path of the splitted parts
   -j join splitted parts
   -p split into n portions
-s split into protions of n bytes size each
-d MSDOS option, uses extension for marking and "\" for paths

This is freeware, i.e. you may give this program to anyone you like
and upload it to any mailbox, bulletin board or software server as
long as you leave this package as it is. If you have any idea on how
to advance the reliability or funtionality of this program, please
let me know. But you may not use this code for anything commercial
nor are you allowed to distibute any changed version on your self.

The package contains th following files:

 splitter.c The C source code.
 splitter.doc This document.
 splitter.amiga Amiga binary.
 splitter.exe MS-DOS binary
 splitter.sun SUN sparc binary

.............................................................................

You can find it on Aminet as "split121.lha".

Cheers!

I have read Dave Haynie's comments onAAA and I guess I have to disagree with
them even though I am not an engineering genius like he is.
The design of advanced amiga graphics environments using video chips which are
now to be found on IBM video boards is a good idea along with RTG. I am in
favour of it. It is something, however, that can be left to third-party
developers who will be able to make up enhancement boards for the Amiga using
these new chips. Any cooperation that the new company can give them should
be given to them and as much standardization as possible should be
encouraged.
The AAA chipset is something which for the new Amiga would be standard and
right out of the box, along with the 68060 processor and probably a new OS.
It will be something on which the third party enhancement board makers would
be able to BUILD UPON. At least, that is the way it should be. The third
party developers can't very well supply us with it, and so this difficult job
will have to fall to the new company to do. Even if they have to rehire
everyone that was laid off before to work on it, they should do it.
It is my belief that standardization is one of the BIG things about the Amiga
that make it attractive; it's ability to do things right out of the box with
no screwing around. If what I have read is correct, there are so many
different combinations and permutations of videoboards , hardware, software,
peripherals and drivers that to get an optimal system with PCs is rather
difficult and can lead to unforseen and frustrating difficulties.
AAA should go ahead, and the sooner the better

Well, it all depends on what Escom licenses the technology for.
But I doubt that Escom will allow others to sell Amiga clones.

You know, it's funny the way Amiga users see clones. They want
other companies to sell Amigas for competition and extended
development of the Amiga technology. BUT, when Commodore had such
an agreement with NewTek, most Amiga users cried foul when NewTek
put their own logo on the machine in place of the Amiga logo!

Here's an example:
-----------
Even Newtek themselves, until now completely dependant on AMIGA
tech., also cover the AMIGA nameplate with their toaster label.
It makes you wonder where their heads were, biting the hand that
fed them. There was a spotlight on a talk show quite a while back
now (Sally Jessy R I believe) where the Lightwave AMIGA tandem
was highlighted. However Newtek was doing the demo & therefore
AMIGA was never mentioned & was covered up as usual.

Jeff, what I assume Mark is talking about is the last version of the
64C. The 64C used different chips than previous versions of the 64,
so it was impossible to canibalize parts from dead 64's. They
combined some of the custom chips to reduce manufacturing steps,
and costs. They also reduced the RAM chips down to 2. If I
remember right, in the end it costed less than $40 to manufacture
a 64.

And yes, I did work for a Commodore dealer which included repair
work on 64's for 7 years!

The chip you are thinking about is the 6526, and it WON'T WORK!

Yes, the early 1000s (the ones without the daughterboard) did use
the 6526, but I've tried them in my later 1000 and they don't work!

Also, the 6526 was designed for a machine that ran at 1-2MHz, not

IBM didn't release its technology to other companies. IBM made the
mistake of using common parts that could be bought in any electronics
store. The only thing copyrighted on the IBM is the BIOS ROM, and
that can easily be copied.

The Amiga on the other hand is very difficult to copy with its
custom chips.

The question is if a book was written about the Amiga, who would
buy it? How many people (or Amiga people) would buy the book?
Did you buy "The Home Computer Wars", a book about the home computer
industry and all the companies involved (mostly about Tramiel and
Commodore including the early days of the Amiga)? Probably not.

Do you have "The Commodore Story"...a flyer put out by Commodore
telling the story of Commodore including Amiga development?

Maybe if someone produces a FAQ file on it, but I can't see too
many people interested in the Amiga saga.

WW> it woudn't suprise me either!

Actually, there is truth in the rumor! The upgrade release of 2.0
for machines other than the 3000 was delayed for a year because many
commercial programs wouldn't work on it. This gave those software
manufacturers a chance to produce upgrades that would work with 2.0.

Commodore put out certain rules for writing software for the Amiga,
in order for programs to be compatible with future versions of the
Amiga's operating system. If those rules weren't followed, the
programs may not work with future OS's...and that's what happened.

Anyway, Commodore held back the release of 2.0 a year to give those
companies to come out with new versions of their programs, or
produce maintenance upgrades to fix the bugs.

You were complaining about people discontinuing development on

what John wrote, the TRS80 model I was the first system that

In my case, I would still be programming the Commodore PET, and
mainframes via punched cards!!! You have to keep moving with the

Amiga and IBM are obsolete, I'll program on that machine and leave
the Amiga and IBM behind...just like I left the PET and 64 behind.

TK> <<WE>> all know that it's totally outdated tech, but there's a

First off, I agree 100% with Escom's plans to resurrect production
of the 600. We can't forget that the best selling Amiga was the
bottom-end 500. There is a demand for low-end Amigas, and the
1200 doesn't qualify...although it is the low-end AGA Amiga.
There is plenty of software (and games) that people buy low end
Amigas for.

It was the sales of the low end Amigas that supported development of
the 1200, 4000, and other Amigas in development.

As well, there is still a lot of demand for the 64. So much so that
Commodore was working on a new one called the 65. Commodore wasn't
able to pull it off due to financial difficulties so they sold them
all off "as-is". Those who did get it were amazed with it.

In regards to interfacing a computer to "real-world applications",
I can do it far easier with a 64 than I could with an Amiga, or an
IBM for that matter. I've interfaced the 64 to control robots, to
drive scientific experiments, etc. I could even task-switch with
the 64.

There are a lot of factories that use the 64 in interfacing to real-
world applications. I even know of one in Germany that uses a 64
to test equipment before it is sold! There is still a lot of demand
for the 64, especially in those countries that can't afford expensive
computer equipment!

Yes the Amiga 1000 was the first Amiga that was sold to the public
by Commodore, but there were many incarnations of the Amiga including
one that was as big as a Cray, and the original Amiga was a game
machine without a keyboard.

In fact, there were even two versions of the 1000...the early one
didn't have the 256K WCS daughterboard for Kickstart storage.

IBM's and Amigas are similar...what an interesting concept.

Let's see...well, they both are computers, they both have screens,
they both have keyboards, they both use electricity...gee, I guess
they ARE the same! ;)

I'm sorry Mike, but your statement made me do it! What gave you the
idea that they are similar? Yes the Amiga can read/write to IBM
disks and with special software and/or hardware can run IBM
software, but the IBM can't do the same due to limitations.

My first 1000 died from HEAT, from not enough air circulation and

I'm still running 1.3 and I know that Qblue 1.0 works to read BlueWave
packets (it better I'm using it to read this message and send this
reply). Also Terminus 1.0e works on 1.3. As far as I know there are
no Internet related applications available for 1.3 since there is
no TCP/IP stack that runs under 1.3. The best you'll be able to do
is VT100 terminal emulation to a unix shell account.

that WordPerfect did. As far as the interface, FW can be rather
annoying at times, but I've learned to put up with it. I'd like to try

Jon,

JI> SA> the '*' is a wildcard to find the first program on the disk, the '8' is
JI> SA> the device no, ie the disk drive, and the '1' is to tell the OS not to
JI> SA> relocate the code, but to load it in from where it was saved. Normally,
JI> SA> the C64 loaded everything into $0800, which was the start of the BASIC
JI> SA> area. All basic programs are stored here and consequently, saved from
JI> SA> here as well. Machine code could also be saved from $c000. This would
JI> SA> be loaded back to there with the '1' appended to the 'LOAD' command.

JI>What do you mean "relocate the code", "$0800 and $c000", and "Machine
code"?
JI>:-) If "8" is the location of the drive, what are 7 through 0? I remember
JI>using a tape "drive" when we used to have a VIC-20, and even using carts!
:-
JI>Actually, you could make some pretty cool carts for the A500! The whole
game
JI>fits in a cart that plugs into the expansion port, and it could even
include
JI>faster CPU and RAM.

Let me take a shot at this...

On the C64 and C128, on every program saved to any storage media (i.e.,
disk, tape, etc.), the first two bytes of the program were the address
to which it would be loaded. If you typed in

        LOAD "program",8

the program would load into the memory area used for BASIC programs,
i.e., 0x0800, ignoring the program's builtin load address. If you
typed

        LOAD "program",8,1

instead, it would use that programs address to figure out where to put
it. The first instance is "relocating the code".

Now, as for the ,8 part of it...that's just a device number telling
BASIC where to find the file you want, i.e., disk, tape, etc. Believe
it or not, I still have my C64 user's manual, and C64 and C128
programmer's reference guides, and according to them, valid devices
numbers are as such:

        0 Keyboard
        1 Casette
        2 RS232
        3 Screen
        4-7 Printers (usually)
        8-30 Disk drives (usually)

What is meant by "usually" is that devices 4-30 were any type of
"serial" device. But the C64's serial port is not the same as the
Amiga's or a PC's. Same concept, different pin configuration.

I hope that clears it up! :)

I like them. I've been using GBlanker for a while now. But BlitzBlanker
is pretty nice too...recently reinstalled it. 2.60 is a nicer release.

I tought Skyline was kind of ugly. 3 cheers for Maze...You Betchya! Goats
is already...it's a lot better than ASworm... :) Grabbed with the
Solutionds, hehe hehe...that's funny. <G>

Spot wors on my 2000HD perfectly. If I recall, Spot, with previous
releases of BB wouldn't work correctly. I like this one.

Asha's idea is Perfect!! I too knew there was something missing; even
though it's Very nice like it is now. I'd like to Only see 1 Tree in the
middle of the screen. Nothing else...just 1 Tree. And let Asha draw it. :)

I HATE the Flying Toasters idea but I was suprised at how much better this
was as well. Nice details. A lot better than most! But I'm not sure I'll
keep it active...as I still find them kind of stupid. Just a wird thing
about Video Toasters I guess (haha).

MD> And I finally saw your nifty Butterfly blanker. It's great! Such big

DRATS!! DRATS!! And Double DRATS!! I'd like to see this one. But I
can't get it to show up on my A2000HD. Darn! I can't even get a CONFIG
window. :(

You just need a file splitter & joiner. These do exist...problem is, I
haven't see one around for a while now. If you have access, check AmiNet.
I suggest D/Ling (Downloading) the INDEX file & then doing a search of
"split" or such. (ADPro V2.5.0 comes with a File Splitter & Joiner for
both AMIGA & ibm...that's why I don't know any PD/Shareware filenames).

That doesn't seem to be the case here. LHA is still in strong effect BUT
LZX is making a Name for itself. I know that in This area I supports most
of my local boards with new AmiNet files. I have a script that converts all
Bigger LHA files to LZX... And most of the C-Net boards have added LZX into
their Archives (for checking etc).

LZX seems to be doing well in CA. I LOVE it. There are a couple of
changes I'd like to see though. Shall I name them? :)

It's already his the "Personal Computer" ;-) Anyway, I don't know if I
agree with the statement "Once it's available for both platforms, we'll
see something happening with it" because while I was with IBM before I had
an AMIGA (Years...ago) there was an Archive format that came out called
"SQUEEZE". Does anyone else remember this beats?

It was Nice. It compresses 20% (if I remember correctly) better than ZIP.
But because so many think "ZIP" when "Archive" is said...I'd guess that's
why it didn't take off (or did it??).

So I'm not sure about that statement. ;) I HOPE so, however.

P.S.
What I Do like about THAT is having something on AMIGA 1ST before

 I have an A2000HD w/3.1. 040/28.

GT> I use these shareware/freeware utilities:

GT> Powerdata (automatically decompresses powerpacked files as if they

I now use XLoad which is PPLoadSeg but for XPK & now also PowerPacked
files.

GT> ArcHandler 1.0 allows you to utilize lha files as directories!! you can

I REALLY need to get this fully setup...

GT> MuteFix.lha a pack that has all the voice files you need for 3.0 so
GT> yur amiga can spaek again!

Is this better than the Lame Synth voice? :)

GT> Magic Menu (adds menus items to wb)

I have it..like it a little. But it reminds me TOO MUCH of Windoze. Ick!

GT> Powersnap (enhanced snapping/pasteing commodity)

I LOVE this Utility. I wish there was something else though that did PATCH
the OS. I truely love it.

GT> KingCon 1.2 (enhanced shell replacement)

Uh-huh....another kick butt prg! 1.3 has been out for a while, but it
caused my machine to crash on me once in a while. So I'm back with 1.2.

GT> muchmore 4.0 (text reading utility)

Check out FullView Much nicer & handles Packed files.

GT> multiclock (adds clock to wb, which speaks the time every 15 minutes)

 Not bad...

GT> viewtek 2.1 (pic viewing utility)

I don't use VT anymore... FastView is MUCH nicer. :)

GT> Dms disk compressor
GT> lha file compressor (moving quickly to lzx!!)
GT> LZX1.1 (new file compressor)

These Archivers are Nice. DMS, LHA, & LZX 1.1 are the Main ones we need
anymore. :)

GT> arc (file compressor)

I'm glad this Dino is no longer used. :)

GT> TUDE (best 1200 degrader I've found)

 Not bad.

GT> degrader (another 1200 degrader)

 Love this one!

GT> reqChange (much better requesters!!!lots of options!)

 I like RTPatch better. :)

GT> fastblit (speeds up blitter operations)

For some strange reason this always slows my machine DOWN. :(

GT> fastmath 4.06 (faster math libraries) (am I missing and more of this

 Yep!! These are GREAT!!

Q-Blue V1.9 PB. (THE BEST QWK/BlueWave Offline Mail Reader...I _AM_ going
to get my registration sent in IF these would STOP
happening that demand money I've saved...argh!)

Frodo (the BEST 64 emulator out! It's also the Slowest one...but everthing
WORKS with it...so far unlike the Others)

MUI 2.3 (Some like it, some don't...I do. There are a LOT of files out for
          it)

Bootman (A very nice Loader util.. Allows you to select different startups)

Upcat (A very nice File Data base for keeping track of your files)

DiskSpare Device V2. (With this you can increase your Floppy & even Hardrive
disk space. I LIKE this one!!!)

MT-Copy [Multi Tasking Copy] (Too bad it doesn't TRUELY Multi Task...but
it's a nice Shareware Copier, handles DOS &
                               NDOS).
PopPhone (Newer...GREAT for keeping Addresses, Names, Phone #s, Comments,
etc... Uses MUI. It's Full Functional).

SnoopDOS V1.XX - V3 (Best System Monitor & bath displayer made!)

RunIt (Great helping Older games with with Zero30/Zero40 machines.)

And MANY others... I'm always going thru AmiNet...hehe.

Most games for the Sega/PC market are mainly composed on Amigas anyway, so
the only thing that they'd have to do would be to COMPLETE the games on the

Well you can get a used A386sx BB and Cyrix 486 upgrade and
Super-Multi-I/O card for say $704 USD that's not too bad for low end
486 emulation with SVGA graphics, IDE controller, Multi-I/O, and maybe
5 MB RAM (Around there.).

It's also nice to not have 2 computers cluttering your desk and to be
able to say look my Amiga runs 486 software too. Can you run Amiga
software? *Chuckle*

you are looking for an adjusable coil. this is a plastic tube about 2 1/2"
tall, with wire wrapped around it. it will be labled some thing like
L301. it will be located some where near the flyback transformer. (big plastic
blob with wires coming out. one going to the picture tube). there is a
semi-metalic set screw in the middle of this plastic tube. you have to insert
a plastic tool made to fit the screw into the center of the plastic tube and
turn the "set screw". moving the "set screw" up or down in the plastic tube
will adjust your width.

CAUTION. i always tell folks to stay out of their monitors if they are not
experienced. the monitors these days have safty features built in, but they
will still kill if you screw up while inside of one. the width came be
adjusted with power off. turn the screw, power on, see how it looks, power
off and readjust.

unless you have schematics, these numbers mean little to anyone. kinda like if

Ok here's 3 reasons why I'm not going to upgrade to DirOpus 5.... (I tried out
my brothers copy on my machine to see if I liked it.)

 1) It's *slow* . I noticed straight away that changing between windows took a
noticeable time, with more windows open the slow down was more pronounced, On
a 28MHz '030 system you wouldn't expect delays (however short) in response to
mouse clicks, on a slower system I can see it being very anoying.

 2) It didn't like my WB layout and refused to mirror it on it's own screen,
while this is not a terminal problem I found myself still using workbench for
some things.

 3) I just couldn't get everything I wanted on the DOpus screen at once, my
Opus screen is *full* . There just isn't any room for anything else on the
buttons, devices or menus, the window borders and tool bars on Opus 5 took up
just that bit too much space and I found myself constantly looking for
something hidden under something else.

Having had my moan 8^)= I didn't, in the short time I used it, get it to
crash (which 4.12 still sometimes does) and if I were buying for the first
time I would probably go for it. However it isn't worth (IMHO) the money for
the upgrade as the earlier versions are slicker in their opperation.

Cheers,

I can tell you what's happening (but not how to fix it) The Amiga is starting
the background colour too close to the start of each scan line and the black
level clamp in the monitor is turning any background colour into black.

Try giving MicroVitec a ring, if they can't help directly they may know a man

Ah! That's one I know!!

Same with some old NEC Multisync's

The problem lies in the 31.5 Khz part of the monitor wich calibrates the
screen intensity on the black-level of the incoming signal.

Now.. The Amiga starts painting it's colors quite happily at the earliest
possible moment (aka Overscan..) and these monitors get a bit confsed and
they 'see' this color value as 'black' and adjust their color settings.

Result: dark or false-color screen.

Solution: Run borderblank!

Borderblank creates a black border on ECS machines (and up) using a register
on the ECS denise. This makes the monitor happy as it now 'sees' a true black
level at the start of the screen.

OK, so you now get an (according to some people..) 'ugly' black border (I like
it!), but it should work OK after that..

                                                Bye Arno.

Hi Gary !

GP>>> Except that, according to Dave Haynie, AAA is now already outdated and
GP>>> both are far from nearing the finish line yet.

AAA is IMHO outdated and I don't think that ESCOM will use AAA for
a new generation of Amigas. There are roumors that ESCOM already
talked to SPEA (SPEA produces gfx-boards for PCs) about a special
version of there 64Bit-boards for a new PCI-Amiga.

Very strange. I would have thought that a power cut would merely cause
a hard drive validation area and trash one area only. Or are you using

ES> odds that it was the 030.

I'd say just the opposite. A lot of the things that made GOMF useful to
people were addressed in AmigaDOS 2.0 and later, such as being able to
recover from a Guru. Also, remember that the Guru dissapeared after 2.0!
While the red-eye requesters we get now RESEMBLE a Guru, they are not exactly
the same and GOMF was geared very much towards Gurus.

Additional tidbit: the demo version was a VERY early demo and was not at all
representative of how well the real program worked. The author felt that the
demo actually HURT sales since many people figured that the commercial
version was just as flakey.

Finally, Gomf only really worked WELL when used in conjunction with the GOMF
Button, a hardware widget that went directly on the motherboard. The
software-only version was OK, but there's only so much you can do in software
when the 68K comes up with a bus error.

Functionally, the 030 and 020 are nearly identical, except the 030 has a lot
of things internally that the 020 only has externally, as options. If a
program will work on an 020 with math coprocessor, there's a VERY good chance
it will work on an 030, right along the lines of 95%. I've never had an
030-specific program that did not also work on my 020, and vice-versa.

Various tidbits for your cogitative nourishment.

Because it is illogical to assume otherwise. I have never encountered a court
system based on the idea of philanthropy. They are not free research
institutes -- they are there to render judgement based on evidence presented
them. Sure, they do research for thier own purposes, but not to save some

Let me clarify it a bit, for those who slept through the last rules posting
:-)

12) Users should not waste the money of the system operators who support
this echo by including needless and excessively large "signatures"
at the end of each message. In addition, "high ascii" (ANSI) characters
are not permitted within the echo, since it cannot fairly be assumed
that the receiving system necessarily has the capacity to display
    them.

That's it. BBS ads are not specifically forbidden, but as part of a signature
seen on every single message? No, it's quite clear that that would not be
kosher.

Ah, Joyce is the one that cracks the whip, I'm just the one that cracks skulls

Or, in plainer English (since I seem to be getting a bit too allegorical as of

WARNING: Excessive disk buffers WILL slow down your drive! I have no idea
why this is, but I HAVE seen the effect. There was some talk at one time as
to what the optimum buffer setting for a hard drive would be, so I did some
experimentation. What I found was that the actual optimum setting depended
on the drive itself, and that there IS such a thing as TOO MUCH. For my
Fujitsu, anything over 50 or so caused it to slow down.

That, and the fact that original game consoles were pretty measly, and the

has set in... :-)

You probably heard right. Just because you HAVE TrapDoor doesn't mean you

JI> The first Amiga BBS software? I wonder if it'd even work on an 3.0

There's a good chance it would. It didn't have any Intuition elements to it,
and it only allowed a single line, so there's a good chance it wasn't too
convoluted and thus stands a good chance of surviving across DOS barriers.

Actually, I think that's a third-party utility that provides CNET with
hotkeyed menus. The author of such a utility lives here in San Diego.

There you go again! I have to differ! The 2000 is FAR from being a "cheap
and crappy" machine. When it was introduced, I daresay it was the MOST
innovative personal computer on the market.

(we're talking: up to 9 megs expansion with the motherboard-mounted CPU, 9
slots for expansion (1 video, 1 CPU, 2 XT, 3 Zorro-2, 2 AT/Zorro-2),
integrated I/O, integrated sound and video, 1 meg RAM on the motherboard...

Asha,

Sorry for all your FW troubles! I tried to find anything about the
export options, but could find nothing... (Mine worked OK after a normal
install.)

It may help you to know that prefs can be found in FWFiles as FW.Prefs,
at least on my machine! :) (You should probably look in the Fonts dir
considering how confused your FW sounds! ;)

Good luck with the reinstall, if you decide to try it!

Absolutely correct. Monitoring keyboard, mouse and joystick is done
system-friendly (with the OS) and so only works if Multitasking is
on.

So, when you leave DGalaga, the OS-Timers tell BlitzBlank that the blank
time has passed and so BlitzBlank blanks immediatly.

But you can easily see that joystick monitoring works if you
move the joystick while BlitzBlank is blanking (joystick monitoring
must be on of course).

It *is* useful for Multitasking games (like Minerunner for example).

The A-model was designed in Germany. It was later replaced by the B-model,
because it was cheaper to produce. The A- and B-models had minor differences,
so the A-model is not 100% compatible with later produced add-ons.

For example, when you add a A2630 to your A2000, you have to remove the 68000
in the A-model. B-model owners keep their 68000 and can switch between the
030 and the 000.

I'm afraid it means you have a defective RAM CHIP... It's been a while, but I

Works great as a BBS mail tosser... since Spot uses a custom msg format, it's
not possible to use it as a mail tosser... but it's d*mn fast, that's a fact..
Foozle is slow, but works well, especially with TransAmiga BBS.

Spot has a lot more bells and whistles too, the taglines being but one of
them. :) Don't worry about switching. (G)

From out of the night darkness *Ralf* emerged, all grubby and smelly, and
muttered something about Ram Disk Icon

Hi Ralf,

RB> I have a question concerning my Ram Disk Icon. Is there any way to
RB> permanently change it? There is no apparent "disk.info" file, and if I
RB> make one, the icon is lost after I reboot. Does anyone know a way to
RB> permanetly change the Ram Disk Icon using the WB-Icon Edit?

I have the following method set up:

Create the icon you want to use and save it as 'RamDisk.info' somewhere, such
as Workbench. This can be done by using an icon editor to load in the current
RAM icon then 'save as' to a different (permenant) directory.

Then add the following lines to your user-startup (or startup-sequence):

    ;copy ram disk icon
    copy Workbench:RamDisk.info RAM:Disk.info

As long as this is done before WB is loaded then you should be laughing.

Hope this helps.

It means that the watchdog timer isn't working. If you look at the keyboard
PCB you will see a chip with the number 74LS123 (I think, but I can't check
because I don't have a screwdriver handy). If the caps lock light blinks all
the time then this chip has probably died, if it only blinks sometimes then
it's usually a bad soldered joint on the PCB somewhere round that chip.

The last of the European model C64s had 2 ROM chips, 2 CIAs, 2 RAM chips, 1
processor and a SID/VIC/glue chip. There may have still been the colour RAM
chips but I think they got integrated into the SID/VIC chip. The PCB was
reduced to less than 1/2 the area of the first model and was only that big
because it had to remain full width to accomodate all the connectors.

Sounds good, where from ?!!

According to the the upgrade bupf i got, v1.2x is supposed to support the

Its a bit difficult as you lives in the US and I live in the Uk but i think
there is
a place a called Amiga hut or Software Hut that deals with Amiga stuff or
failing
that you could try a company over here in the UK called "1st computers"
over here
and if you like i could order it for you if send me the cash or contact them
direct

What bit do you need as I was told that the systemconfig file is
no longer needed used in the A1200 its all stored in the prefs or
the ENV directory??? My setup is an A1200 with Supra FAX MODEM
14.4 plus a Squirrel SCSI 2 interface adaptor and a 3x CD-ROM and
a EXABYTE Tape streamer plus a 2MB expasion under the trapdoor of
the Amiga1200 in NTSC Hi-resmode 32 colour WB mode.

I have now got another Tape backup program which not as good as
Mrtape but it does seem to work better with the drive. But this
writes to the tape in MAX block size 1024 blocks and a buffer of
32k this seams to work but I have since then reseated my
accel' card as I thought this could cause problems.

JG> Incidentally, the best buffer size is the same size (no more, no less)
JG> as that on the tape drive's controller (this is an option you control
 JG> from MRBackup itself).

Hmm intereting point, as I know that the controller buffer is
only 256k and I should match this in my software on the Amiga.

Thanks again for your help.
