 Introduction

One of the problems   of   MIDI    sequencing   software   packages  on the
Amiga platform  is  the  lack  of  multi-editing   tools  required  for the
production of professional quality MIDI  music..  Up  until   now,  Music-X
V2.0 only came bundled with 5 ARexx  macros for manipulating  MIDI data but
pointed the way to  the  possibilities  for  the  creation of further ARexx
macros as additional  Music-X  editing  tools..  We   have   attempted   to
improve  the effeciency  of  Music-X  by  producing  some  additional ARexx
macros for further maniplulating MIDI EVENT  data within the Music-X   V2.0
Sequencer  environment  for  a  whole   host  of  different  applications..
Hopefully,   these additional ARexx macros will make other Amiga MIDI musos
lives a little easier...

Some  of  the  ARexx macros  featured  here  function on ALL  or   SELECTED
EVENTS,   some  on  simply  NOTE  EVENTS   and  some  on  simply  MIDI  CTL
(Controller) EVENTS.. This AmigaGuide  document  contains  a list,  of each
ARexx macro followed by a detailed description of its intended usage.

 If you use Music-X and  have   ARexx    and  the  RexxEdit  module you will
be already familiar with the extra functions that  these macros provide.

For those who are not familiar with what the Music-X ARexx macros are or do
then here's a brief explanation..

The commercial  release of the upgraded  Music-X  V2.0 came bundled  with 5
ARexx macros

  1.CopyTranspose, 2. InterpolateSlope, 3. TimeStretcher, 4.TrimEnd
  and 5. V-Scaler.

There was supposed to be an Ear Trainer macro but this never appeared?

Anyway,  the  ARexx  macros  were  produced  with  the  view  of  providing
additional tools for editing MIDI  data  within the Music-X MIDI Sequencing
software environment.. Although Music-X has an excellent wide range of tool
facilities for editing MIDI  data  within  the  software  itself the  ARexx
macro additions makes certain editing of MIDI data, previously difficult or
out-of-reach, that much easier now  by  the  emergence  of new ARexx macros
produced by Music-X users themselves.

The original distribution of the  5  ARexx  macros  above, together with an
ARexx Music-X Performance filer player and RexxEDIT module and accompanying
documentation could be located on  INTERNET  and  later the AMINET archives
and  CD-ROMs.  At  a   later  date  MicroIllusions/Hollyware  Entertainment
upgraded Music-X from V1.1 to V2.0 which  now came bundled with the 5 ARexx
macros and were fully documented in the Addendum part of the user manual..

For  a  more  indepth  read  of    the   @{"REXXEDIT" link "REXXEDIT" 0} documentation then this
has also been included within this package..

The macros contained here within this package were developed from the ideas
contained within the original 5 ARexx  macros  which came with Music-X V2.0
but have further expanded the editing  options  for a wider variety of MIDI
data within the Music-X V2.0 MIDI Sequencing software.

The Music-X ARexx macros have been  tested  on an A2000 HD with Commodore's
A2091 SCSI Controller, a  Quantum  Fireball 540Mb internal SCSI  harddrive,
a A2630/68030  Accelerator 5Mb  RAM, a  Quantum  Lightning  730Mb  external
SCSI harddrive running both Workbench 2.1 and 3.0..

Please don't hesitate to contact me in case of any problems with any of the
Music-X ARexx macros on your system  I'll  be  glad to correct any problems
and send you a revised version  of  a  particular  ARexx  macro  as long as
you include a  jiffy bag and return  postage along with  the  macro  and an
explanation in an ASCII doc on a blank Amiga formatted disk..

 Installation

In order to gain the best use  of  these Music-X ARexx macros then you will
need to install them in the  relevant rexx sub-directory within the Music-X
directory on your harddrive or   the   rexx   directory  on the Music-X 2.0
floppy disk.. Obviously, they  will  work  more  efficiently on a harddrive
system with a 68020 or above accelerator and with more than 1Mb of RAM, but
they should work from floppy,  particularly  if you powerpack (crunch) some
of  the  files  on  the  floppy   disk   to  make  room  for  the  macros..
Additionally, the REXXMAST, which comes bundled  with the ARexx language on
Workbench 2.04 and Workbench 3.0  etc.,  needs  to  be installed along with
some additional files and libraries in order that these ARexx macros will
run..

If you possess Music-X V2.0, then the manual provides information regarding
setting up ARexx on an  Amiga  system  for  the  ARexx macros purposes..

This ARexx macro is  a  modification  of  the  original CopyTranspose macro
bundled along  with  the   commercial  Music-X  V2.0 software package. This
NEW CopyTranspose-Auto macro can be used to copy and transpose NOTE EVENTS.
The only difference between this macro and the original is it automatically
retains the respective NOTE EVENT's MIDI Channel's assignment, which can be
more efficient when editing a 0 format file (Single Music-X sequence track)
or when continually transposing  the  same  Music-X  sequence track several
times.

This ARexx macro filters ALL   or   SELECTED   NOTE  EVENTS by the required
intervals to C Major 7.  This  macro  was  designed specifically to aid the
construction of auto-accompaniment style  data  used  in  the Korg i-Series
Interactive Music Workstations  from   Standard   MIDI  FILE (SMF) sequence
data. What this macro does is  re-configure (transpose) any MIDI chords and
single note data within in a single Music-X sequence track to a combination
of four notes (C E G B) which make  up the C Major 7th chord.. These can be
re-constituted in all variations and inversions  (any order) on the C Major
chord scale and will always produce the desired effect..

If a single  Music-X  sequence  track  also  contains  rhythm   (Drum   and
Percussion)  data  on  one  or more channels,  (in  the case of the Korg i-
Series, Drums are on  Channel  10  and  Percussion  on  Channel 11)  either
extract   these   and  then merge   them   back  again  after filtering, or
alternatively use  the  EVENT SELECTOR module  to  select the full range of
NOTE EVENTS  on  all  Channels   except   those  containing the rhythm data
(minus 10 and 11 for example), before invoking the filter macro in SELECTED
mode.

This ARexx  macro  filters   ALL   or   SELECTED   notes  by  the  required
intervals to C Minor 7.  It functions   in  exactly  the same manner as the
C Major7 filter macro,  apart  from  filtering  certain  notes to the Minor
rather than the  Major  third  interval.   Again,   this   was specifically
designed for use with Korg i-Series Interactive Music Workstations..

An ARexx macro to report  the   General   MIDI  (GM)  instrument patch name
for a given preset or GM bank  number  from  a  specified General MIDI (GM)
voice table embedded within the macro itself...

A simply designed easy-to-use enter  string   requester permits the user to
type in the required number for a GM  preset #1-128 or GM banks A11-B88 and
the  macro  outputs  a  simple   graphic  requester  listing  the  required
information as ASCII text from  a  specified  General MIDI (GM) voice table
embedded within the macro itself... Useful  for General MIDI (GM) reference
whilst working in the Music-X sequencer's BAR and or EDIT pages..

Rather than using a  virtual  slider  as  employed in the CopyTranpose-Auto
macro, this version makes use of a  button  switching action . This type of
approach can be more useful if you  know exactly what musical intervals you
require and  saves  the  user  continually   accessing  the  slider  during
successive transpositions.

Only commonly used intervals over about  a  2 octave range included on this
version. A more extensive two  collumn   module  could  easily  be  created
over a larger range if  you  find it this button approach functional.

A single octave (an Octave above  only)  version of the Interval-Auto ARexx
macro..  Basically, this is a  cut-down  version which limits the necessity
for user specification and uses auto preset parameters over a single Octave
range instead..

This ARexx macro provides a virtual  mixing  console, just like an analogue
multi channel mixing desk, for editing  between  1  or ALL 16 MIDI Channels
CTL 7 data  EVENT  values  (GM  Volume parameters) within a single  Music-X
sequence track. The Controller 7 (CTL 7) values  maybe edited individually,
the EVENTS can all be assigned a  global  value (MV1)  or all shifted up or
down  by a  chosen  amount (MV2), both may  be specified  by the  user with
virtual software slider controls. Limitations on  use:- The module operates
more  logically if  the  channel/s controller  values  contained within the
sequence are in numerical order, and unique - i.e.  the module will in fact
exit gracefully with an  error message string informing  the user if  there
are more  than  one CTL 7  EVENT  value  per channel.  The ALL EVENTS input
selection mode should be used with a sequence track containing CTL 7 EVENTS
only!  i.e. pre-selecting  CTL 7 EVENTS,  using the  EVENT SELECTOR  module
before running this macro in the  SELECTED mode, gives more optimum results
for editing a multi-EVENT type single sequence track.


Here's how to use this Mixer Arexx macro:-

Create a single Music-X sequence  track  containing  ALL the CTL EVENTs for
Synth Bank, PGM EVENTs for  instruments,  CTL  7  EVENTs for volume, CTL 10
EVENTs for PAN, CTL 91 EVENTs for  Reverb  FX,  CTL 93 EVENTs for Chorus FX
and PBEN EVENT with a value of zero,  for  ALL 16 MIDI Channels and use the
Mixer ARexx macro to adjust  the  CTL  7  volume  for  each  of the 16 MIDI
channels - just like a mixing desk!

for example MIDI Channel 1

 CTL  000 056    Synth Bank (000 056 for Korg, 000 000 for Roland)
 CTL  032 000    GM Mode
 PGM  001        GM instrument 1 = Piano1
 CTL  007 100    Volume, value = 100
 CTL  010 064    Pan, value = 64 which is Centre of stereo field
 CTL  091 038    Reverb FX, value 38
 CTL  093 038    Chorus FX, value 38
 PBEN Val=0      Pitch Bend starts with a zero value

Now repeat this for MIDI channels  2  -  16  within the same single Music-X
sequence track. Now you  have  a  virtual  Mixer  track  containing all the
nesessary MIDI CTL and PGM  parameters  needed  for  General MIDI (GM). Now
select just the CTL 7 EVENTS and invoke  the AREXX option within the BAR or
EVENT Editor pages and chooose  the Mixer file.  You will be presented with
the virtual mixer where you can  now adjust the CTL 7 volume parameters for
ALL 16 channels globally..

A simple ARexx script  to call the  MX-to-MIDI (Music-X-to-MIDI)  converter
utility in the  background  on  the Workbench environment.  Very useful for
launching the Music-X to MIDI converter utility from within Music-X itself!
By the time you temporarily exit  Music-X the  utility is already loaded on
the Amiga's Workbench screen waiting for you..

An ARexx macro which writes an ASCII text output file from a single Music-X
Sequence track to  RAM.  The output  file, specified as  (prog.txt),  which
contains   relevant  information  identifying  various   MIDI   parameters,
specifically these are MIDI channel (1-16) and MIDI PGM or No. (# 1-128) as
well as  individual  MIDI  instrument  name  labels per  MIDI  channel (The
General MIDI (GM) 128 Instrument and 8 drum kits table is used), useful for
detailed information  embedded  within  a  single Music-X Sequence track or
converted Standard MIDI Files (SMF) format 0  files... The  outputted ASCII
text embedded in the (prog.txt) file provides all this  useful information.

Similar ARexx macro to the  Pgm-Page macro  with a  tabulated output and  a
save  file   requester...  Again,   Pgm   outputs   an   ASCII   text  file
containing  headings  for the  above   MIDI  parameters  (MIDI Channel, PGM
#, instrument  names and  specified  drum   kits  from  the GM set).  Users
can specify their own unique destination file name and AmigaDOS destination
path via a  save  requester.. If not specified  by the user  then the macro
actually saves the output file as Pgm.txt by default..

An ARexx macro to remap General MIDI  (GM) Drum notes to KORG i-Series Drum
Map default 5 required for the  Korg  i-Series Style data parameters.. This
macro will work  for  the  Korg  i2/i3/i4S/i5M  and  i5S  Interactive Music
Workstations..

Page 5 of  the  i2/i3's  software  Arrangement  Play  mode displays feature
settings that determine  how  the  arrangement  will  play  back  the style
selected on page 1. This  is  particularly  relevant  to the drum data.. On
Page 260 of the  Korg i2/i3 reference guide are  illustrated Kick and Snare
designation tables, these tables show how an arrangement's Kick designation
and Snare designation parameters affect the  Kick  and Snare sound you will
hear from a Korg i-Series  synth.  Its  for  this  reason that any drums in
Standard MIDI File (SMF)  data  produced  to  create  a Korg i-Series style
should adhere to some simple convensions like so..

Always use these drums for Kick, Snare, and Closed Hi Hat:-

        KICK            SNARE           CLOSED HI HAT
        NOTE 36         NOTE 38         NOTE 42

As long as the above convensions  are  adhered to then the arrangement mode
can be USER configured and  four  different  variations of Snares and Kicks
can be used. Conforming to  this  drum  map  also anables the Korg i-Series
synth to change drum instruments on the fly  at a press of a single onboard
button. If the user requires a Rim Shot instead of a snare then as the pre-
defined #38 GM snare has been  implemented  within  the STYLE data then the
mapping is correct for the Korg mapping  and it will transpose the Snare to
a Rim Shot.. Likewise, if the user  wishes  to  change a Closed Hi Hat to a
Ride Cymbal on the fly,  then  as  long  as  Closed  Hi Hat has been chosen
within the STYLE data  then  this  also  conforms  to  the  above Korg drum
mapping required. And again, this will also permit a re-mapping of a Closed
Hi Hat to a Ride Cymbal on the fly..

The above parameters can also be   specified   as fixed from the arangement
(patch) mode which is specifiic to the  user patch.. Each USER patch (1-48)
can contain different drum mapping parameters as  long as the notes are per
Korg i-Series requirements.. Moreover, the  Arrangement mode also anables a
choice of different drum KITs from 1  -  8  in the General MIDI GM) (set) 6
Preset and 2 USER to further enhance your sound requirments..

The above ARexx macro simply scans the  Music-X sequence track for any Bass
Drum, Snare Drum and Open Hi  Hat  NOTE  EVENTS  and forces them to be Korg
STYLE Drum map specific as in  the  small  table above.. All Bass Drums are
changed to Note #36 (KICK 1), all Snare  Drums are changed to #38 (SNARE 1)
and any Hi Hats or Ride Cymbals are changed to note #42 (CLOSED HI HAT)..

An ARexx macro which copies and/or  moves  NOTE EVENTS in a single  Music-X
Sequence track through time  and  in  the  process  with the possibility of
producing a new  END EVENT point, if so required.

This macro may also be used to simply alter the END point EVENT start time.

This ARexx macro provides a start time correction facility. It functions by
dragging NOTE EVENTS backwards in time  to   the  origin  by  a value equal
to the start time of the first NOTE EVENT.

This macro is very  useful  for  eliminating  any  slight time delay errors
sometimes found when porting  sequence data  between machines and different
computer  platforms.   Moreover,  it  can  be  used  to  correct  sequences
containing MIDI CLOCK timing errors between   external MIDI devices and the
Music-X sequencing software  itself.  A   more  common explanation, is that
this macro simply forces the  initial  NOTE  EVENTS  to   begin at 0 (zero)
clocks or the first beat of the first BAR!

Step Time Increment ARexx  macro,  which   steps   EVENTS    in time  by an
increment of one clock.

This macro is particularly useful   for  staggering EVENTS at the beginning
of a sequence in order to  prevent  possible MIDI data clogging. (To ensure
sound MIDI transmission of any MIDI  EVENTS,  then separation of each EVENT
permits that certain parameters on the  external MIDI device are configured
correctly before the NOTE  EVENTS  are  transmitted. Reset ALL Controllers,
Volume, Pan, Reverb and Chorus  effects  are  transmitted first, usually in
bar 1 of the MIDI score, enabling  the  setting up of the external synth so
it will then play the MIDI   music   as  the author of the music intended..
This is particularly relevant with General MIDI (GM) scores and devices..)

This macro is also useful to  stagger ALL the CTL, PGM and PBEN EVENTS in a
single Music-X sequence  track, just like the mixing track  required by the
mixer macro.. Each EVENT when  manipulated by  the StartTime  macro will be
forced to follow on by a  value of 1.. If all EVENTS have been  inputted in
the Mixer track for example, at 0 clocks, then the StartTime macro will add
a value of 1 to each  proceeding  EVENT - producing  the  effect of stepped
EVENTS each of which possess their own unique start time in MIDI Clock time
eg. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc. This not only  produces a neat  Music-X sequence
track where the MIDI data contained  within that track is each seperated by
the value of 1 clock but is equally more efficient for MIDI transmission to
an external MIDI device..

Globally increase/decrease Attack Velocities by a pre-defined random  range
about a mid  point.  A  variation  on  random  percentage velocity scaling,
results appear to be  less  unpredictable  and  therefore  offer  more of a
degree of control over other similar modules.

Velocity flattener - flattens  Release  Velocities  of  NOTE EVENTS to half
their initial value.  Particularly  useful  for  flattening  rogue 128 NOTE
velocity values to 64.

Since many synthesizers send NOTE  OFF  messages  as  NOTE ON messages with
attack velocities of ZERO this makes the MIDI data stream more efficient by
eliminating the need to  change  the  running  status. Music-X records NOTE
OFFs in whatever form it receives them  and will show a Release Velocity of
128 if the NOTE OFF was  received  as  a  NOTE  ON with zero velocity. This
value of 128 would be illegal in MIDI  Protocol, and is only used as a flag
by  Music-X so it knows to send the NOTE OFF as a NOTE ON during playback -
possessing a value of 128  informs  the  external  MIDI synth device not to
sound the NOTE EVENT with  any  Release  Velocity. The V-ReleaseFLAT module
provides a more sensible method of editing NOTE EVENTS to default values of
64 for ALL or SELECTED EVENTS in a Music-X sequence track.

This ARexx macro globally  increases  or  decreases  ALL or SELECTED Attack
Velocities of NOTE EVENTS  in   direct   proportion   to  the chosen amount
as specified by  the user (original  velocity scaling  of  MIDI NOTE EVENTS
is retained but reduced or increased  globally by  percentage  specified by
the user).

This macro is very useful for globally  adjusting a  single  sequence track
containing all 16 MIDI channels worth of MIDI  NOTE EVENT data  (as  in a 0
format SMF) where the music may be  too  low  or too loud in volume levels,
this macro permits volume adjustment on SELECTED  or ALL the NOTE EVENTS by
Attack Velocity in  one  pass  without  tampering  with  the  CTL  7 volume
parameters..   Also  useful  for  globally  adjusting  MIDI  drum patterns/
sequences from any source forcing them to be comparible with a current MIDI
score that the user may be working on.

Keywords:Shifts ALL or SELECTED Attack Velocities of NOTE EVENTS up or down
by a given percentage value as  specified by  the  USER without  destroying
the velocity  scaling  structure  of  the  original  NOTE  EVENTS  within a
complete score or sequence track clip!

ARexx MACROS

In order to set up your  Music-X  V2.0  boot  disk or Harddrive so that the
various ARexx editing modules will work  in  Music-X  V2.0  copy  the ARexx
mast to the 'system' directory on your boot disk/or harddrive.

INSTALL MODULES

With the install modules utility program which  comes with Music-X V2.0 you
can specify the actual page  within  Music-X  which the ARexx macros should
work.  For this purpose, click on the Install  modules  icon on your Music-
X V2.0 bootdisk or in  the  Music-X  directory  on your  harddrive, and the
program will proceed to  load.   Once   loaded,   you   will  be  presented
with  a  simple  requester  type  interface  with  certain  specifiers  for
particular  operations   within  Music-X  V2.0.  In  order  that  the ARexx
macros  can  interact  with Music-X it  should  be checked or ticked on the
Editor Page only.

Once you re-set your Amiga and re-boot either from the Music-X boot disk or
the installed version on your harddrive  the  ARexx  macros should now work
because the Arexx  mast  has  been  installed   in   your  system directory
together with the appropriate ARexx  libraries and AmigaDOS commands.   The
ARexx macros should be available  in  both  the  'Bar' and  'Event'  editor
pages.   As a side note, some  ARexx  macro  editing functions  do  take  a
little  time  to  operate   and  as  a  consequence  the Amiga's mouse will
sleep during the process.  Don't  worry  about  it because the Amiga  won't
have  crashed!   Good   luck   with   these  great  new  Editing options in
Music-X V2.0

Introduction:

"RexxEdit" is a module that allows Music-X to call  an ARexx macro program,
which can in turn edit the events in  a sequence. This module only works in
the Editor pages (the Bar and Event   Editor).  The  module will attempt to
start-up the ARexx server, "RexxMast," if it is not already activated.

When RexxEdit module is selected from   the  Module  Menu, a file requester
will open so the user can select an  ARexx program to run. The module first
looks for the logical assign "MXRexx:"  and,  if found,  shows the contents
of that drawer. If  "MXRexx:"  is  not  found,  the  logical assign "Rexx:"
(where all standard ARexx programs  are  kept)  will be searched  for  and,
if found, displayed. If  "Rexx:"  cannot  be  found,  then  the contents of
Music-X's own drawer will be displayed.

After selecting the ARexx program from  the  file requester and clicking on
"OK", the module will run the ARexx  program.  The ARexx program can access
the events in  the  currently  displayed  sequence   by  calling  "external
functions"  that  are  contained   within   the  RexxEdit   module.   These
functions  can  be  used  to  scan  through  the  events; insert, delete or
change  events; or get information about the current Bar Editor enviroment.
In addition,  the ARexx program can create a module requester with buttons,
sliders,  etc.,  and  then discover what setting the user chooses.

When the ARexx program  terminates,  whether   through  normal execution or
because of an error, the module will  exit  and  return control to Music-X.
Any changes made by the ARexx program will then be displayed.


Writing an ARexx Program for Editing:

First, RexxEdit always returns  results  from   any  function  call, so the
line "options results" must appear near the beginning of the ARexx program.
RexxEdit uses  the   "Rexx   Variable   Interface"   for   editing  events,
which  means that RexxEdit   communicates   information  about  events   by
directly  reading  or changing variables  in  the  ARexx program.  The most
important of these variables are those with the stem "EVENT".

To begin editing a  sequence,   the   function   BEGINSCAN  must  be called
with a parameter indicating whether  "all"  or  just  "selected" events are
being scanned for. When  done  editing  a  sequence,  the program must call
ENDSCAN. (If a program terminates  by  error  during  an  editing  section,
a  default  ENDSCAN will be performed.)

To get each event in the sequence,   the  program must call NEXTEVENT. This
will cause a number of variables with  the   stem  "EVENT" to be created or
filled-in. For instance, a control  change  event would  have the variables
EVENT.TYPE,  EVENT.CHANNEL,   EVENT.NUM,   EVENT.VALUE,   EVENT.START.BARS,
EVENT.START.CLOCKS, etc.,  set  to  the values contained in  the  event  in
the sequence.  There   is   a  table  below  which  gives  all the possible
variables for each event type.

The program could then change   these   values   and   replace the event by
calling REPLEVENT. Or it  could  change  the  values  and  ask that this be
inserted as a new event with ADDEVENT.  Or  the event could just be deleted
by calling REMEVENT. If the  program  wanted  to  quickly copy the event to
another stem variable, it could call COPYEVENT with the name of the stem.

RexxEdit also allows the  program   to   peek   ahead   to   look  at other
events by calling PEEKEVENT with stem variable to return  the result in and
the number of events to  peek   ahead.   Note  that  the  peek-ahead  event
cannot  be editted  (although  this  may  change  in  a  future  release of
RexxEdit).


User Interface Functions:

Unless the ARexx program only  does   some   simple action (like remove all
events after an END event), it is likely  that  the  program will need some
input from the  user.   This   is   provided   by  the  "algorithmic module
requester  design functions"  --  quite  a  name,  huh?  The  program first
defines the type of controls it desires  in the requester  and  then  calls
MXREQUEST  with  the name of  the  requester  and  an optional name for the
"PROCEED" button. The following  types  of  controls  are available in this
release:

MXBUTTON - A toggle button with a label to the right of it. MXRADIO - A set
of mutually exclusive buttons with labels next to them. MXSLIDER - A slider
with a label  to  the   left   of  it.  The  minimum and maximum values are
given as paramters. The minimum  value  must be positive or zero and cannot
be greater than 255.

MXMIRROR - Another slider which goes from a negative to positive value.

MXNOTESIZE - Puts up one of  those   note  size selection gadgets (like the
Grid Requester has), including a  slider  and  a  label  to the left of the
slider.

So, to create a requester with  a   slider  asking for a note transposition
value, a set of radio buttons  set  to  choose   selected  or  all  events,
and having an alternate name to  PROCEED  control of "TRANSPOSE", the macro
program would do as follows (/* ... */being comments):

When MXREQUEST returns,  the  macro  program   may   query   the button and
slider by calling MXVALUE with the  number  of  the  control  (Numbered  in
the order the conrols appear). In  the  above example  the  MXMIRROR slider
would be control 1, while the MXRADIO  set  would be control 2.   The value
is returned in the global ARexx variable "RESULT".

The maximum  number  of  control   elements   that  can  exist  graphically
in a requester is 40.  Some  controls  have  multiple elements.  MXNOTESIZE
controls have four elements.  MXRADIO controls   have  one  elemt  for each
button in the set.  MXLABEL "controls"  have  one element.  The PROCEED and
CANCEL buttons also count for one element each.

NOTE: Controls that use mulitple  elements  are  still  counted as a single
control for the purpose  of  telling   MXVALUE   which  control  to  query,
numbered in the order they appear.

In addition to  the  requester-layout  functions,   the  macro  program may
display a separate message at  and  time  by  calling  MXREPORT.  The macro
program may also change the pointer (to indicate that  it  is busy working)
by calling MXPOINTER with either the parameter "SLEEPLY" or "NORMAL".


Summary of Functions

The Code given  in  the  examples  of  this  summary,  the  conventions are
observed:

Upper case text is used to  represent  code  which must be spelled as shown
although you may actually use upper or lower case when writing.

Lower-case text, surrounded by single quotes, is used to represent data you
must provide in the code although quotes may not be necessary.

Actual numbers or text (including  commas)  must be provided within quotes,
numeric or text variables must be provided outside of quotes.

Brackets ("(" and ")") surround  portions  which  may be optionally used or
left out of the code.  The  backets  themselves  are not used in the actual
code.

Spaces must be used if shown.

For Example:

                MXREQUEST 'Title(,proceed)'

This  example,  explaining  the  use   of   the  MXREQUEST  function  shows
that "MXREQUEST" must be  spelled  exactly  this  way  though  case doesn't
matter "mxrequest" or "mXrEqUeSt" woukd work as well.  Next follows a space
which must be used to separate  the  function  name  from  the  rest of the
line.  The rest of the example is lower-case text,  surrounded  by  quotes,
so it represents data which you must  provide  in your own  code.  The word
"title", in this particular case (for MXREQUEST), represents the text which
will be  displayed  at  the  top  of  a  requester.   The   next   portion,
"(,proceed)"  may  be  left  out.  "proceed"  represents text that (in this
MXREQUEST case)  would be displayed in  one of the requester's buttons.  If
used,  whatever  you  supply  for  "proceed"   must be preceeded by a comma
(to separate it from "title"  text).   Here  are some posible variations on
the  above   example   (text   variables    are   assumed   to  be  difined
previously in the actual code):

Requester and Control-Handling Functions

MXBUTTON 'label(,State)' Creates a toggle  button   with   an   explanatory
label  to  its  right. "label"  represents  the label text  (23  characters
maximum).   The initial state may be specified, where '0' means off and '1'
means on.  The default is off.  Returns  either 1 (success) or 0 (could not
create control).

MXRADIO 'labell,label2,...' Creates a  set  of mutually exclussive  buttons
(maximum  of 12 in  the  set)  with   'labell,label2,...'  printed  to  the
right  of   each  button   (23  characters  maximum  for each label).   The
first  listed button defaults  to  on.   There  can  be   no  more  than  4
MXRADIO  groups  per module.  Returns either   1  (success) or 0 (could not
create control).

MXSLIDER 'label,minval,maxval(,Initval)' Creates a  slider  with a 'minval'
and  'maxval'. 'mival' must be positive or  zero and cannot be greater than
255.  'label'   is  printed   to  the  left  of  the  slider and  can't  be
longer than   14   characters.   The  optional 'initval' gives  the initial
value for  the  slider.    The    default    is   (minval  +  maxval)  / 2.
Returns either 1  (success) or 0 (could not create control).

MXMIRROR 'label,maxval(,Initval)' Creates a slider  whose   maximum   value
is   'maxval'   and  minumum is negative 'maxval'.  'label'  is  printed to
the    left   of   the   slider  (14  characters  maximum).   The  optional
'initval' gives the  initial  value   for    the   slider.    The   default
initval  is zero. Returns   either    1  (success)   or 0 (could not create
control).

MXSTRING 'Text(,label)' Creates a string entry  control.   Note  that label
comes  second and is optional. Label length is 14 characters or less. If  a
label is given, the text string's maximum  string length is  31. There  may
be  no more than 2  MXSTRING  controls  in  a requester.  Returns either  1
(success) or 0 (could not create control).

MXNOTESIZE 'label' Creates a set of  note-selection  controls  (including a
slider) like the ones in the  grid  requester.   There may  be more  than 2
MXNOTESIZE controls  in  a  module.  The  text,  'label'   (14   characters
maximum) is  printed  to  the  left  of  the  slider.   Returns   either  1
(success) or  0 (could not create control).

MXLABEL 'text' Writes  a  text  string  into  the    next    control  slot.
String length should be 23  characters  or  less.   USeful  for   labelling
or explaining  things.  The  text   is   left-justified,  so  spaces   must
be inserted if  you  wish  to  centre  the  string.  (This does count as  a
control when querying controls by number with the MXVALUE function).

MXCOLUMN 'which' Informs RexxEdit  that  you  want   a  two-column (double-
width) requester and lets you  specify  which  column  the  controls should
appear in.  "MXCOLUMN 1" must be  given  before  any  control  is declared.
All  controls then declared  will  appear  in  the  left   column until the
statement  "MXCOLUMN 2"  occurs.    After  that,  they  will  appear in the
right column.   You  cannot switch back to column one after going to column
two.

MXREQUEST  'title(,proceed)'  Puts   up   a   requester   containing    all
previously  defined  controls,  plus  PROCEED  and  CANCEL  controls.   The
requester  will  be labeled  'title'.   The  title  string  will be centred
automatically and should  be   no   more  than  33  characters  for  a one-
column requester,   or   67    for    a   two-column requester. Optionally,
the PROCEED control may  be  labeled.   Returns  1   if  the user wanted to
proceed, 0 if the user wanted to cancel.

MAXVALUE 'which'  Must  be  preceded  by  MXREQUEST.    Gets    the   final
value of one of the  controls  ('which')  in  a requester after   the  user
closes  the  requester.  Controls  are  numbered  in  theorder  they    are
declared in code,  starting with 1.   (If  new controls are declared  later
for a second requester,  the  count   is   reset   to  1.)  The  value   is
placed into the variable RESULT.    For  MXBUTTON  the  value is 0  if  the
control was unselected and 1  if  selected.  For MXRADIO, the first  button
is   0,  the   seconf   1,  etc.  For  MXSLIDER,  MXMIRROR  and  MXNOTESIZE
controls, returns  the  slider setting.  MXSTRING controls return the final
text entered.


Other Functions

MXOPTION ('options') This  turns  on  or  off   various   options.   If  no
options given,  returns  the  current  options  as  a  RESULT  string.  The
avialable options are:

        SELECTED - Add/replace events in selected state
        UNSELECTED - Add/replace events in unselected/unmarked state
        ASIS - Add events in unselected/unmarked state, replace events in
        state found.  This is the default option which is reset each time
        any macro is called.

MXFILE 'title' Puts  up  the   Music-X   file   requester.    The   'title'
should  be  16 characters or less.  The  complete path  name  of the chosen
file is placed as a text string  in the RESULT variable.  Puts empty string
(")  in RESULT if user cancelled.  The mosue  pointer  is  always  returned
to 'normal' by this call.

MXREPORT 'message1(message2)' Puts up a  message  box   where   the   first
line   is  'message1' and the optional second line is 'message2'.  Messages
should  be  no  longer than 76 characters each, to fit on  the  screen. The
mouse  pointer is always returned to 'normal' by this call.

MXPOINTER 'mode' Change the music-X pointer.  'mode' may be either "SLEEPY"
or "NORMAL"

MXVERSION 'which' Places a  string  into  the   RESULT   variable   showing
the version of the Music-X  library  if  'which'  is   "MUSIC-X"   or   the
version of  RexxEdit if 'which' is 'REXXEDIT'.

GETBARDATA Gets various parameters from the  Bar or  Event  Editor and puts
them in the stem variable "BARDATA",  indictaes  the state  of  the  Editor
pages at  the  time  that  RexxEdit  was    called.     In    cases   where
variables   are   not  applicable,   the  invidivdual  variable   will   be
defined. Each variable is  listed  and  the  relevant  data found within is
explained below:

BARDATA.CLOCKTYPE -- a character string,  either  'REL' or 'ABS' indictaing
the current colck type used.

BARDATA.GRID -- current grid size (in clocks or quarter frames)

BARDATA.STEP -- current step size (in clocks or quarter frames)

BARDATA.MEASURE -- current beat size (in clocks or quarter frames)

BARDATA.SELECT --  a   character   string,   either   'NONE',  'SELECT'  or
'MARK' Indicating whether any events were  selected  or if a region of time
was marked.

BARDATA.START.BARS -- measure (starting with  0)  from start of measure for
first selected event or start of marked region.

BARDATA.START.CLOCKS -- clocks (starting  from  0)  from  start  of measure
for first selected event or start of marked region.

BARDDATA.START.QFRAMES  --  quarter  frames    (starting    with   0)  from
beginning of sequence for first selected event or start of marked region.

BARDATA.STOP.BARS -- measure of start  of   last   selected event or end of
marked region.

BARDATA.STOP.CLOCKS -- clocks from  start  of   measure  for  start of last
selected event or end of marked region.

BARDATA.STOP.QFRAMES  --  quarter   frames    (starting    from   0)   from
beginning of sequence for start  of  last  selected  event or end of marked
region.


Event Editing Functions

BEGINSCAN 'mode(,which)' This must be called before   any   of   the  other
event editing functions  may  be  used.    Starts   an   event  scan.   The
'mode' is  either  "ALL" or "SELECTED".  If the "SELECTED"  mode  is  used,
only those  events in the squence  which  previously have been selected  or
marked by  the  user  will be   accessible   to   the  macro  for  editing.
The sequence  to  scan is selected   with  the  'which' parameter (range 0-
249). If no 'which' parameter  is   given,   it    scans  the  work  buffer
(where  the current  sequence  is  temporarily  stored  while  in  the edit
pages) --  this is the normal way  to use  this  function.   returns  1  if
the scan started properly, return 0 on an error.

ENDSCAN End the current scan.   Must  be  called   before  starting  a  new
scan  or  when   existing   from    execution.      (Will    be    executed
automatically  if exit from an error.)

NEXTEVENT May only be used during   a    scan.    reads   the   next  event
into  a  stem  variable  "EVENT  (see   variables  later).   Returns  1  if
everything went well, returns 0  if  something  went  wrong or there are no
more events.

PEEKEVENT 'stem(,count)' May only be  used  during   a  scan.   Peek  ahead
by 'count' events (zero  or  positive  number),  and  place  the  resulting
information  in  the  variable 'stem'.  If  'count' is not specified,  peek
ahead 1  event.  Returns either 1 (success) or 0 (failure).

ADDEVENT may only be used during  a  scan.    Uses   the  current values in
the stem variable "EVENT" to create a   new  event   and   add   it  to the
sequence. Returns either 1 (success) or 0 (failure).

REMEVENT May only be  used  during  a   scan.    Removes   the  event  most
recently accessed by NEXTEVENT.  returns either 1 (success) or 0 (failure).

REPLEVENT May only be used during   a   scan.   Uses   the  (edited) values
in the stem variable "EVENT" to   replace  the  values  in   the   sequence
event most recently acessed by NEXTEVENT.   Returns either 1 (success) or 0
(failure).

COPYEVENT 'stem' may  be  used  at  any   time.    Copies   the  values  in
variable "EVENT" to the variable 'stem'.   Returns  either ' (success) or 0
(failure).

NOTE: EVENT.START.TICKS and EVENT.STOP.TICKS are   actually copied from the
last event read  (via  NEXTEVENT  or  PEEKEVENT),   if   the   value is not
initialized, it will be set to zero.


Variable returned by NEXTEVENT

When NEXTEVENT reads an event,  it  uses   the  attributes of that event to
replace the values in  various  portions   of  the  working  stem  variable
EVENT.  Any portions of EVENT  which  are   replaced   with  new  values by
NEXTEVENTS are left with the old values from the  previous  event  type and
should be ignored.   The  various  event  attributes   and  their  relevant
portions  of  the stem variable EVENTS are explained here:

EVENT.TYPE -- All events have  an  EVENT.TYPE  which  is a character string
holding a mnemonic like 'NOTE', 'PSEQ', etc.  (explained later).

EVENT.CLOCKTYPE --  All  events   have   an   EVENT.CLOCKTYPE  which  is  a
string containing the mnemonic  'REL'  for  relative   clock,  or 'ABS' for
absolute clock. All events in the same sequence have the same clocktype.

EVENT.CHANNEL -- Some events have a MIDI channel assignment (range 0-15).

All events have a start  time.   Some   events  (those with durations) also
have a stop time.  The variables used  to  store  the  start  time and stop
time of the current event will depend on the clocktype.

All Relative-clocktype events have:

EVENT.START.BARS -- Measure  number  in   which   event  starts (0-4095 for
measures 1-4096)

EVENT.START.CLOCKS -- Clocks away from beginning of measure (0-3071, 3071 =
last clock in largest possible measure of 4/1)

EVENT.START.TICKS  --  Total  clocks  away    from  beginning  of  sequence
(0- 12582911.zero to last  clock  in  measure  4095  in 4/1 time signature)
("Read Only" variable)


Relative Clocktype events with durations have:

EVENT.STAOP.BARS -- (0-4095) measure number in which eveny stop occurs.

EVENT.STOP.CLOCKS -- (0-3071) clocks from   beginning  of  measure in which
stop occurs.

EVENT.STOP.TICKS -- (0-12582911) ("Read Only" variable).

NOTE: .TICKS and are ignored when replacing  or adding an event, only .BARS
and .CLOCKS are used.


All Absolute-clocktype events have:

EVENT.START.QFRAMES -- total quarter   frames  from  beginning  of sequence
(0-10367999, maximum is 4 quarter frames  *   30  frames  * 60 seconds * 60
minutes * 24 hours -1)

Event types and their variables

Additional variables vary by event type, as noted in the following list.

'END - and END event (no extra variables)

'STOP' - a stop sequencer event (no extra variables)

'SPLI' a loop record splice marker (no extra variables)

'REPT' - a repeat count EVENT.NUM  -  number  of   times   to   play
sequence  (1-99,  100=repeat indefinately)

'TSIG' - a time signature change EVENT.NUM  - The  indicator  of  the  time
signature   (indicating  beats  per   measure).   (Range:  1-64,  with  the
restriction  that  the  numerator  may  be  no  greater than four times the
actual denominator.)

EVENT.DEM - The denominator of the  time  signature (indicating duration of
one beat). This number represents the  exponent  of  two  needed (the power
to which two muct be raised)  to produce  the  actual denominator.  (range:
0-4 producing 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16).

'KMAP' - keymap changes, control map change EVENT.MAP - keymap or  control
map   on/off   (0=keybaord off, 1-4  keymap  number, 5=contril map off, 6-9
for  control  maps 1-4) EVENT.NUM -  incoming MIDI channel to route through
map (0-15).

'SYSX' - real-time system exclusive EVENT.NUM -  number of bytes of data in
this event (0-6) EVENT.DATA - a packed string of the data (maximum 6 bytes)
EVENT.LAST - 0 if this is not  the   last  event for this SYSX packet (more
events are expected to follow). 1 if this is  the last event in the poacket
(will show in the Event Editor as EOX).

'TEMP' tempo change EVENT.NUM - new tempo value (10-300)

'PSEQ' - play sequence event EVENT.NUM - number of the sequence to play (0-
249)

EVENT.TRANSPOSE - transposition  value  in  semitones   (0-63  for zero and
positive values, 64-127 for negative values from -64 to -1)

EVENT.CUT - cut value (0=no cut, 1=Seq, 2=all)

'MSEQ' - mute sequence EVENT.NUM - sequence to mute (0-249)

'MTRK' - mute track EVENT.NUM - track to mute (0-19)

'STRK' - solo track EVENT.NUM - track to solo (0-19)

'NOTE' note event EVENT.NUM - MIDI note number (0-127)

EVENT.ATTACK - attack velocity (1-127, 0   should   not   be  used as as to
comply with MIDI "Running status")

EVENT.RELEASE - release velocity (0-127)

'CAT' - channel aftertouch EVENT.PRESSURE - new pressure value (0-127)

'PAT'  -   polyphonic   aftertouch   EVENT.NUM   -   note   number  (0-127)
EVENT.PRESSURE - new pressure (0-127)

'CTL' - control change EVENT.NUM -  controller number (0-127) EVENT.VALUE -
new value (0-127)

'PGM' - program change EVENT.NUM - program number (0-127)

'PBEN' - pitch bend EVENT.NUM - pitch bend value   (Range   0   to  8192 to
16383, representing actual bend values -8192 to 0 to 8191,)

                     The Disk Mag for Amiga Musicians
     AM/FM has now been taken over and will be published by MIDICraft
                       and called MIDICraft Magazine

The Amiga  disk  based   magazine   produced    by    Bjørn  A.  Lynne (Dr.
Awesome)  in  Norway,   called   'Amiga    Musicians   Freeware    Magazine
(AM/FM)'   has  due   to  other  commitments,  decided  to cease publishing
after 19  issues,  (He  now  works  for  Team-17  in Wakefield,  Yorkshire.
UK.)!   After  a series of  communications  MIDICraft  have decided to take
over the helm of publishing  the  magazine  but  the AM/FM  logo  is  being
dropped!      Instead,     the     magazine    is   now  called  'MIDICraft
Magazine'-   The    Disk    Mag     for    Amiga    Musicians.     Previous
distributors  both  here in   the   U.K.    and   overseas   of AM/FM  have
been contacted  and  the  U.K.,distibutors  are    currently   stocking the
magazine.  We have published, to date  (March 1996),  10 MIDICraft Magazine
issues, 10 MIDICraft  Sample  disks  and   4   MIDICraft    Special   disks
(Look   out  for  these   at  your  previous  distribution    library    in
your    country   or  contact  the  publishers  direct  for  your  personal
copies!)    The   new  MIDICraft Magazine will  of course retain the "look"
and  "feel"  of the old magazine. The disk mag contains a specially printed
label as proof  of  Licenceware,  will  retain  the  menu  layout, and disk
contents/directories   structures  as  before. The price will stay the same
as before!

Moreover, the  MIDICraft Magazine  has retained some of the better aspects,
such as Reviews, News  and  Hints   and  Tips  sections.  The new MIDICraft
Magazine also retained  the  Amiga  tracker  music  element  and  strive to
support both the tracker format  as   well  as  the  much  improved OctaMED
Professional format.  MIDI and Music-X   software  and  the  new  Notator-X
data formats will continue being featured  in the magazine in most sections
including FREE Music-X and MIDI files on each issue of the magazine.

As well as the   regular   Editorial   and   features  the  readers letters
will be expanded so come on get  writing  and  send  those  letters  to  us
here at our address below! (You  can  use  the readers  letters section for
your MIDI software  or  hardware  problems!)  We  are   also   looking  for
musical contributors but you don't  have   to   be   a  musician!   If  you
can  write  in  an  interesting and  informative way about anything musical
which you  may think will be  of  interest to MIDICraft readers then please
contact  us.   If  you  are  Amiga  musicians  and  have  some music you've
composed  or  arranged  for  any of the Amiga music/MIDI software then send
it   to   us    with    a    brief    description    of    the   music  and
software/sample/MIDI voicing/Channel setup for   easy  recognition.  If you
have recorded your music to  either  cassette   tape   or  CD  then you can
also send us review copies  and   we   will  strive  to  produce  unbiased,
objective reviews! (Although  as  The  Craft  Brothers,  we  have  recently
recorded our own 'A Drop in the  Ocean'  CD project we would like to  think
that we are simply musicians  JUST  LIKE YOU!!!) Computer  programmers  who
have  coded   musical  orientated  Public  Domain  or  Commercial  Software
Programs  or  Utilities,  can  have  their work featured on the magazine as
either  completed or demo versions. (Please include program documentation!)
Hopefully a large   musician   readership  can  be  targeted  directly. All
contributors whose work is   featured  on  the  magazine  will receive that
particular issue of the MIDICraft Magazine for FREE.

Sample disks are also provided  and   are  being  be produced as before but
with an emphasis on the users need!

Special disks have  again   been   published    and   cover   anything from
readers Modules, to Professional  MIDI  files  and  or  really useful Amiga
music utilities!

Initially Seasoft  Computing, and Active Software in the UK have agreed  to

MIDI NET CD-ROM

An ISO-9660 format CD-ROM containing everything MIDI for ALL Platforms

Developed by Kevan R.Craft and Gareth R.Craft of MIDICraft

in Association with Active Software UK


The MIDICraft MIDI NET CD-ROM  produced  and  developed  over a single year
period  by  Amiga  MIDI  wizards  Kevan   R.Craft  and  Gareth  R.Craft  in
association with Active Software.. MIDI NET is a CD-ROM containing over 1Gb
of MIDI music files and related  software  with  reference to the Amiga but
MIDICraft have ensured that at least 50%  of the material was developed for
the PC and MIDI synth user as well..

MIDI NET CD-ROM contains a staggering  5000 Music-X Performance files which
where possible have been converted to  Standard MIDI File (SMF) format.. On
the MIDI NET CD-ROM we have strived  to convert as much quality material as
possible and this goes for OctaMED  MIDI  MODS.. Additionally, we have also
kept the original files  thereby  ensuring  that  there's  a large cache of
various file formats on  the  CD-ROM  to  suit  all  tastes.. All files are
General MIDI (GM) configured except  the  large  data  base for the Korg i-
Series Workstations which included  Music-X,  SMF, Voices, patches, Backing
Sequences, Songs and hundereds of styles..

The file structure in the Amiga partition of the MIDI NET CD-ROM include:-

Music-X Sequence file format 0 Standard MIDI Files (SMF) format 0 and 1
OctaMED MMD1, MMD2 and Sound Studio MODs in General MIDI (GM) and some that

A  large  cache  of  song  files   for   the  Korg  i-Series  and  X-Series
Workstations!


SynthVoice files

A large cache of many manufacturers  synthesizer voices in SMF (MID), SYSEX
and specific file format..  Music-X  Protocols  and  voice  libraries for a
plethora of synthesizers, Dr. T's  X-Or  and  MIDIQuest patches, voices and
programs for many synthesizers..


Korg i-Series Interactive Music Workstations (i2/i3/i4S/i5M and i5S)

A Large data  base  for  the  Korg  i-Series  Interactive Music Workstation
containing Standard MIDI  Files  (SMF),  Songs,  Program  data, Arrangement
data, Backing Sequencer data, and  a  huge  library  of style data ready to
load including styles in SMF format for easy editing..


Korg X-Series data bank

This bank contains 6 MSDOS disks  worth  of  song  and program data for the
Korg X2, X3 and X3R Workstation synth..


Synth Editors and Libarian Software

There's a whole host  of  applications  supported  in  this archive for the
Amiga  and  PC  platforms   which   include   Generic  and  specific  synth
manufacturers Editor and  Librarian  software  packages  authored  by users
themselves which include example files ready to go..

A Large data base of ASCII  releated  documentation  on the subject of MIDI
and recording artists..

Plus many associated files  and  documentation  which accompanies the above

MIDICraft Magazine the disk mag for Amiga musicians

All 10 issue of the MIDICraft  Magazine, MIDICraft Sample disks and Special
disks are archived in DMS format just waiting to be unarchived..

Where possible, the  majority  of  Amiga  utilities,  documents, magazines,
demos and  music files have been archived using LHA or DMS.. The same files
for the PC have been archived using the  popular ZIP method all of which is
conducive for the Internet..

CD-ROM then this of  course  will  be  available  in  Aug  1996 from Active
Software and most CD-ROM vendours for a  RRP of £24.99. The majority of the
CD-ROM's directory  and file  structure  is  fully  documented in ASCII and
there are  accompanying  readme  docs  for  the  different  archived  files
presented in a similar manner just like AMINET.. There's also an AmigaGuide
 linked to all files in the AMIGA directory and this has been duplicated in
 html format files for other PC and other platforms..
