1. What is Switch?

An Intuition based metric conversion utility.


2. How do I install Switch?
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Drag  the  icon  to  whereever  you  want  to  put  it,  on  hard-  or
floppy-disk.   Switch is  not reliant  on any disk-based  libraries or
support files.

Switch  uses GadTools  gadgets and  menus, and  thus requires  AmigaOS
release  2.00  or  above  (Exec version 36 or above).  Switch has been
tested on machines running AmigaOS release 2.04, 3.0 and 3.1.


3. How do I run Switch?

Double-click  its  icon, or type  "switch" in a Shell window.   Switch
does not rely on the Shell for input and output, so you may safely run
it in the background; try something like
run <>NIL: switch


4. How do I use Switch?
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Once Switch is running, you will see its window; there are three points
of interest:
1. The conversion indicator;
2. The input gadget;
3. The result indicator.

The conversion indicator shows the conversion which has currently been
selected.   The default is "Inches -> Centimetres".  You can select  a
different conversion from  the  menu  bar.  The menu "Conversion"  has
three  sub-menus:  "Distance/Area", "Mass/Volume", and  "Temperature".
As  soon  as  you  make a selection  from  the  menu,  the  conversion
indicator will be updated, and the input gadget will  be automatically
selected for you.

The  input gadget is  simply a string gadget;  it will accept letters,
but these obviously do  not give a  meaningful conversion!  You should
enter an integer or decimal fraction with no leading spaces.  When you
press  RETURN,  the  conversion  will  be carried  out and the  result
displayed  in  the  result  indicator.    The  input  gadget  is   not
de-selected  when you press RETURN,  so you  can  easily enter a whole
load of values to convert without having to click in the gadget  every
time.

You  can  quit  from  the program by  clicking on  the  window's close
gadget,  or  by selecting "Quit" from  the  "Control" menu.  Selecting
"About..."   from  the  "Control"  menu   brings   up  the  ubiquitous
information window.

When  the  input  gadget  is  not  selected,  the  following  keyboard
shortcuts are available:

Right Amiga-Q : same as selecting "Quit" from the "Control" menu;
ESCAPE        : same as selecting "Quit" from the "Control" menu;
Right Amiga-? : same as selecting "About..." from the "Control" menu;
RETURN        : automatically selects the input gadget for you.


5. Bugs and limitations

The  keyboard shortcuts don't work when the input gadget is  selected.
"About" seems to work, but not "Quit".  Strange...

The  conversions  are  not always  very  accurate.   Do  not  use  for
precision work!  They are accurate enough for  day-to-day  use.   They
are  as accurate as the conversion tables printed  in  pocket diaries,
and should be used accordingly.

- Version 1.0ß1 (9-Oct-96, beta release)
· Code cleanup, no change in functionality.
· Version numbering changed to be more Amiga-standard.

- Version 1.0ß2 (30-Oct-96, beta release)
· Menus as well as gadgets are now disabled when the "about" window
  is active.

- Version 1.0 (11-Dec-96, first public release)
· Public release of 1.0ß2.
· Switch now centres itself on any width of Workbench screen.


7. Legal stuff

Switch  was  inspired  by  Multi-Con by  Chris Swift; an  AMOS  metric
conversion utility.

Switch is copyright İ 1996 by Stephen Williams (no,  Steffan is not my
real name :-)

Switch may not be released as part of a commercial package without the
written permission of the author.

Switch is not in the public domain.  It is copyrighted freeware and is
freely  distributable.   The  author,   Stephen  Williams,  holds  the
copyright.  Switch may not be altered in any way.   No  profit  may be
made  from Switch; PD libraries are permitted  to make only  a nominal
charge for distribution.  Switch  may be  uploaded to  bulletin boards
and to FTP sites.

Switch  may  be  included  on  magazine cover disks.   If you wish  to
include Switch on a cover disk, please write and let me know.

Switch has been thoroughly tested.  The author is satisfied that it is
a  stable piece of  software.   However, the  author  may not  be held
responsible  for  damage,  loss or injury caused as a direct result of
using Switch.
