Van een trouwe Feigling fan kregen we de volgende brief: Bill Gates is a kewl dewd? Well, not really. He's really just a socially inept, power-hungry, wannabee technical business man, who happends to be the richest human on the planet, worth approximately $12.9 billion. Bill dropped out of Harvard in the late 1970's to start a company based on his version of BASIC written for the first thing which could be loosely described as a "Personal Computer". He started making his money by creating technically poor, but marketable applications for whatever computer was available. When IBM was looking to make the first "PC", Billy bought the rights to QDOS - a bastardized CP/M - and pawned it off to Big Blue as "PC-DOS". When the marrige between IBM and Microsoft went south, PC-DOS became MS-DOS. Hello, world! Since Billy didn't write QDOS, he really has no idea how it works. [He's really not a very technically savvy person!] Because he doesn't know how it works he is effectively incapable of making any major revisions to this OS. The one thing he CAN do is build upon this mystery code. Welcome to Windows! Windows is not a graphical operating system. Windows is a graphical front-end for DOS! Windows 95 is a face-lift for this veneer. It's STUCCO on the INFORMATION SUPERPARKINGLOT. Billy, however pathetic a programmer he is, does have ONE admirable trait -- he has always been in love with the Macintosh OS. While he's not harassing his female employees, he's looking at a Mac and trying to figure out how it works. Unfortunately, because he's such a socially retarded individual, Billy is incapable of getting the POINT. He has failed to understand the psychological and sociological concepts which made the Macintosh (and the Lisa before it) such an intuitive, elegant machine to use. Instead of understanding the art of a human interface design which was created with $5 billion worth of research about how people think and work, all Big Bill sees are windows and buttons. Here is Bill's logic: If windows and buttons are easy, then MORE windows and MORE buttons are easier! Right? WRONG, BUCKO! Now, you could just dismiss me as some fringe lunatic with nothing better to do. That's OK. I don't seriously expect anyone to have a "Moment of Clarity" as a result of anything *I* say! Why listen to me? Obviously I'm no technological god, or president of a major computer systems engineering firm. I say, DON'T listen to me! Instead, listen to what Scott McNealy, president of the world-renown SUN Microsystems has to say about Windows: MCNEALY CRITICIZES "WINDOWS 95 HAIRBALL" Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy doesn't think much of Windows 95: "This Windows 95 hairball has become so big, so unmanageable, so hard to use, so hard to configure, so hard to keep up and running, so hard to keep secure. Windows 95 is a great gift to give your kid this Christmas because it will keep your kid fascinated for months trying to get it up and running and trying to figure out how to use it." McNealy says the biggest problem in computing today is that people confuse computer activity with corporate output and productivity: "These (systems like Windows 95) are not productivity tools, they are personal activity generators." (Investor's Business Daily 5 Oct 95 A34) Sorry Bill! Hip Hip Hooray to the Feigling crew!
