He worries about all the animals, the sea, the river, the ocean. He worries about the pygmies much like about the rainforests. Has he ever worried about his own hair, getting thinner day by day? What about the Scener? This idle creature, this frightfully shivering youngster being thrown out of puberty into life. After his short evolution, the common Scener turned out to be a idealist being his head full of exciting ideas, cascades of melodramas to be put into zeros and ones float around in his semiorganic flow of axonal celebrities. Light to darkness movement to a final standing still. The raster bar as symbol for our inner Atlantis vanished and gone. Where are you now all you keepers of our phantasmagorical outbreaks? And the philosophers and "scientists" - all gone away. f2Vanished, left us alone. f1In case you haven't figured it out yet: I am trying to be highly witty here. No, seriously. The Scener which I - which we - appreciate so much is about to be doomed to stumble out of this very Scene into absolute unimportance. Not only for the c10Amiga c09that is. I shall have a look at the remains of firststage Scenes. We all know about the state of the c10C64c09. All that remains is a bunch of variables that have turned into constants. Groups do not evolve anymore they remain fastened like granite to once again at each party available shock and stun the audience. But is there life? Alas, no. One of the earliest Scenes - the c10Amstrad/Schneider CPC c09Scene that is - still is available. Yet they do not look behind their own ideals, they search to compete with upgraded machineries. Identification gets lost this way. Now I must confess that a Demoscene like we all would define it has never existed there. Merely crackers and gameprogrammers in c10Basicc09. Never uninteresting though. Still, I have to make it comparable to the state of our nowadays Scene although transformation here isn't easy as variables are commonly difficult to set into a mathematical scheme as long passion and compassion are to be put into integrals. f2c08 DO WE REALLY NEED TO HASTE BEHIND PHANTASMS? f1c09The c10Amiga Scene c09looses identity in its run for keeping up with the PC Scene, useless to stress that we want to make bull of the 133Mhz c10Pentium/clone c09by our attempts to create mindblowing twisting and twirling scenaries. Still, where does this lead us? The stakes haven risen for what people might expect from an c10Amigac09. Not long ago I felt like we should stay on ourselves with 680X0 power under misregard of the world around us. Nowadays with the c10PowerPC c09at the very verge of control, I ain't too sure anymore. What is intriguing there is that with that move I - as symbol for us all - just tend to be once again be able to state: f4c08"Amiga is on top!" f1c09Here I'd like to draw back to my earlier thoughts about the c10CPC Sceners c09in their lust to participate in Internet and whatever may be fancy. I really ask myself if the constant demand of upgrading doesn't mean a loss of identity and also of idealism. All the alternative Scenes orient themselves on stakes which are not their own. If one expands ones c10CPC c09to a 4MB machine, where remains the idealism to take the best out of the given possibilities? Taking an c10A1200 c09and turning it into a truecolour 24bit, 32 MB, 16 Bit, 3.2 GB monster doesn't show much of the quality the Scene had with a 512 Kb unexpanded A500. When we follow the outcry of a modern society to better, bigger, faster, we see that we are stepping away from the ideal to make the best out of given circumstances, therefore ruining the idea of our Scene: f2Showing the bollocks to others by having the balls to remain what we are. f1Sounds splendid, doesn't it? Yes, let us stay at the state of 1992 when a c10A1200 c09was an exception which was justified by c10Commodorec09. Yes, let us bind ourselves to what a company says is essential and throw out all the fancy expansion! Just to become relics that means. This is the second side of the coin: If we remain at the older stage, which puritans love so dearly, we turn our system into an oldtimer. Much like the c10C64 c09is nowadays. Do we want this, on the other hand? I don't. I want my c10Amiga c09to be a tool of nowadays, not like a blast from the past. With this background, I ridicule what I have written just two paragraphs before. Who wants to be a constant on the market. I don't. f2c08 THE FUTURE? f1c09Whatever way we take - and I think there is no doubt that we shall take the expanded highway into future - it will lead us to a point which will ruin our Scene. If we follow the call after new fancinism, we will lose our roots, our principles. If we don't instead, we will become antiquaric - how f4"neat"f1. In the end there might only 50 Sceners left like on the c10C64 c09today. The only answer might be that there is no answer. Why not giving in? Articles like this one are rhetoric, we can't find a way out of the dilemma. What we could do aswel is to celebrate this cultural farce we face and once again pop up with our heads up high and just say like it is: f4c08"Never mind, folks, we are here until we are gone."
