It contains messages posted to the Blitz mailing list during the month shown on the main page. --- Administrative commands for the blitz-list list --- I can handle administrative requests automatically. Please do not send them to the list address! Instead, send your message to the correct command address: To subscribe to the list, send a message to: To remove your address from the list, send a message to: Send mail to the following for info and FAQ for this list: To get messages 123 through 145 (a maximum of 100 per request), mail: To get an index with subject and author for messages 123-456 , mail: They are always returned as sets of 100, max 2000 per request, so you'll actually get 100-499. To receive all messages with the same subject as message 12345, send an empty message to: The messages do not really need to be empty, but I will ignore their content. Only the ADDRESS you send to is important. You can start a subscription for an alternate address, for example "john@host.domain", just add a hyphen and your address (with '=' instead of '@') after the command word: To stop subscription for this address, mail: In both cases, I'll send a confirmation message to that address. When you receive it, simply reply to it to complete your subscription. If despite following these instructions, you do not get the desired results, please contact my administrator at hassel@acc.umu.se or my owner at blitz-list-owner@netsoc.ucd.ie. Ie: you're starting with a simple linear velocity simulation. Next you want to put in a constant linear acceleration. So s=vt + 1/2at^2, with a being a constant. Then to be more realistic you need the Force and Momentum equations- next you need to change it all to Rotational force and momentum, so you need the mass, and radius of your Rotor. Then you want to add in the change in acceleration (Impulse if I remember- forgotten the formula :) Hope this helps- give us a yell, if you need more details :) Cya- Anton -- Anton Reinauer UDP_Chat- an IRC-like test-bed for my UDP internet multi-player game functions. - About to start on shared lib version for several platforms. http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/ants @ENDNODE @NODE "Mail_52" " Re: d.c. motor simulation " From: David McMinn Date: 09-19-00 00:17:09 Subject: @{b}Re: d.c. motor simulation@{ub} The new local vet, Francis G. I'm doing that just now to calculate the speed, acceleration and third derivative (of position). I must be doing something wrong, as it doesn't look like what it should (I have graphs here showing the expected output for certain inputs that I ain't gettin). I was just wondering if anyone had anything that worked. It doesn't need to be mathematic, just more realistic than the crap simulation I am using now (which is the only way I've got it to work so far). speed = input_voltage position = position + speed * time_step_size So it doesn't take any kind of friction or inertia into account so it pretty much sucks :) Thanks though. For instance, say the speed of the motor gives you a value of 134 and then 234, your rate of change would be 100. I used something similar in a project that I was doing for college (I've just passed it today, :D ) where I had to trigger an event whenever the rate of change in a signal was over a certain value. I don't know where you're getting your information from (and as I've never tried this with OS3.5 icons I might be wrong) but normally the GadgetRender field points to an Image newtype, and not a chunky thing (even though OS3.5 icons are stored internally as chunky images, they get decoded when loaded). No, Dave's saying that all the memory for all the items in the list will get allocated when you Dim the array - and so if you have each item in the list containing 1000 longs, you will be allocating 1000 (for the number of items in the list) * 4 (sizeof.l) * 1000 (number of longs in each item of the list) which gives 4000000 bytes (3.8Mb ish). > Ofcourse this is only true if they programmed it well :) Which we all know isn't always the case with Blitz :) -- |) /\ \/ ][ |) |\/| c |\/| ][ |\| |\| | dave@satanicdreams.com http://members.xoom.com/David_McMinn | ICQ=16827694 Artificial intelligence has been around for years. Umm..I`m not sure about that...I think that would be true for say strings, but if you try newtype .silly lotsoflongs.l[1000] end newtype dim list dave.silly(1000) should allocate atleast 3.8mb for just the longs, nevermind the overheads (1000*4*1000)...I think so anyway..mind you it`s 4am :) Dave @ENDNODE @NODE "Mail_81" " Re: ListViews " From: Tony Rolfe Date: 09-08-00 09:34:31 Subject: @{b}Re: ListViews@{ub} On Wed, 6 Sep 2000 18:42:13 -0700 Curt Esser said: > Hi Neil, > > David is right, as usual. That's the theory for linked lists, but I don't believe blitz2 works that way. In my project I use eight different lists. To initiate each list, I dim(ension) them. If I insert two high values in the dim-command (which should be useless with lists), the program refuses work because "out of memory" before there is anything stored in any list... David is right, as usual. But he forgot to point out what I think is the real answer to your question, the part about Dim'ing the list. Lists are NOT treated the same as a standard array, so the normal method is to simply Dim the list to a value much larger than you ever expect to use, then add the items as needed. For example, if I was expecting to have a maximum of 50 ~ 100 items in a list, I would Dim it to say 2000, or so to be safe... The key point is that the list will NOT waste any memory on the unused items - it only sets aside the memory for each item when it is actually added to the list, whereas Dim'ing a standard array DOES set aside the entire memory for the number of items requested, right at the start. > > i.e. to add another thing to the list you would do: > > If AddItem(guilist()) Then guilist()\entry = > > > Dim List guilist.lview(count+1) : ResetList guilist() > > If you reeeeeeeeeeeally need to do this then you need to copy all your data out > of your list before you re-Dim it and then copy it back, otherwise the list > will be empty, or full or crap. > > > or is there a better way? Basically, I've got NEWTYPE.lview dummy.w entry.s End NEWTYPE Dim List guilist.lview(count) ; count is usually between 5 and 10 ResetList guilist() This works. I can use that list in a GTListView. It's when I want to add something to guilist() and update the listview that is all goes wrong :) What is the correct way to do this? I obviously need to increase the size of the linked list, so do I just do Dim List guilist.lview(count+1) : ResetList guilist() or is there a better way? If I do it like this, then add all the data into the list again, including the new piece of data. I alloc some bitmaps by graphics.library/AllocBitmap() then i do some blit operations on them as normal copy and masked copy using graphics.library/BltBitMap() and graphics.library/BltMaskBitMapRastPort(). Well, sometimes, above all when i have a lot of applications running, i get my programs screen corrupted. I think this happens because Picasso96 found the graph board without phisic mem available, and does some buffering operations in fast mem to solve memory limits, without show a classic error message as, "not enought video mem". I tryed to modify the settings of Picasso96, for example disabling "planes to fast", but the problem is still present, so now i think Picasso96 does this actions normally, so do you know a way to force picasso96 don't to share the phisic mem in board? I tryed the flag BMF_USERPRIVATE in p96AllocBitMap() but i have still these problems (and if i have understand well, by that flag, p96 allocates bitmaps in fast mem). Thank you, and bye. " From: Anton Reinauer Date: 09-29-00 00:34:53 Subject: @{b}QNX available!@{ub} The QNX RTP, is now availible for free download from http://get.qnx.com . It is available in the base 24.1 meg version, which installs as a hard file on Windows, and a version for Linux will be available soon. Extra files/programs can be downloaded off the net using the package filesystem that comes with it, or from http://qnxstart.com . Also, you can download the 91 meg iso image to burn to a CD with everything on, which can install as in the 24 meg one, and can also install to a partition. ;****************************************************************** Developers Can Now Get QNX® for Free FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SAN JOSE, ESC Show, September 26, 2000 - The moment eagerly awaited by over 45,000 pre-registered developers and enthusiasts is here: This morning, QNX Software Systems officially released the QNX realtime platform on http://get.qnx.com. Starting immediately, anyone can download the entire platform for evaluation, prototyping, personal use, or other non-commercial purposes at no charge. "Today marks two firsts in the embedded industry," said QNX CTO Dan Dodge. "To begin with, the QNX realtime platform is the only solution to combine the reliability, speed, and small footprint of an RTOS with all the benefits of a platform OS: low cost of entry, friendly self-hosted environment, plus tools and POSIX APIs familiar to thousands of developers. "Second, QNX is the only major OS vendor to give away its entire technology suite free to anyone who wants it for non-commercial purposes. The new Get QNXT program will make it much easier for developers to join the fast-growing QNX community, and much easier for our OEM customers to leverage a large base of knowledgeable developers." A Complete Distribution The free download is a complete, fully functional distribution of the QNX realtime platform. It includes the full suite of QNX OS modules (microkernel, file systems, networking, etc.), a GNU toolchain, a code-generating application builder, the Photon microGUI® windowing system, Internet and multimedia applications, hundreds of utilities, plus source code for many applications, drivers, and libraries. Third Parties Get with the Program The free download also includes a variety of software from third-party vendors, including: Glide 3D API from 3dfx, scalable fonts from Bitstream, ICA client from Citrix, RenderWare 3D toolkit from Criterion, Quake III Arena demo from id Software, Flash Player from Macromedia, and RealPlayer from RealNetworks. Partners Join in Several of QNX's key alliances have also joined in, by serving as active members of the platform's beta program. According to Jim Colson, lead architect for appliance software at IBM's Pervasive Computing Division, "With its POSIX APIs, open architecture, and rich multimedia capabilities, the QNX realtime platform will serve as an excellent development environment for the emerging Internet appliance market. Furthermore, it will enable developers to build reusable, standards-based, and network-deployable components that can run on various devices, including mobile phones, PDAs, Internet-enabled vehicles, set-top boxes, and residential gateways." Productivity First Dan Dodge explained the QNX realtime platform was designed with one overriding goal: to significantly improve the productivity of embedded developers. "Besides providing immediate access to a complete OS and suite of development tools, the QNX realtime platform offers extensive memory protection to speed up debugging, POSIX and Linux APIs so developers can leverage existing code, and, most importantly, a self-hosted environment that eliminates the need to build a separate target system developers can develop, debug, and test embedded applications right on their PCs." Modular Packaging, Easy Installation The QNX realtime platform auto-detects a PC's hardware, making installation a snap. Plus, it can be installed on an existing Windows system no need to create a separate partition. The download itself comes in distinct packages that the developer can pick and choose from, using a convenient package installer. This modular approach makes for faster downloads and simplifies the process of installing new or upgraded components. Once the platform is installed, the developer can visit the QNX Developers Network (http://qdn.qnx.com), a web site filled with useful services, including a searchable knowledge base, FAQs, bug reporting, and more. Plus, the QDN contains a public newsgroup where anyone can discuss the QNX realtime platform, ask questions, and help others. CD Available The noncommercial version of the QNX realtime platform is also available on CD, for US $29.95. To order the CD, visit http://get.qnx.com. ISV Program in the Works QNX also announced it will launch a special program for independent software vendors (ISVs) who want to develop applications for the QNX realtime platform. The program, to be unveiled later this Fall, will include special discounts on commercial development licenses. About QNX Software Systems Founded in 1980, QNX Software Systems is the industry leader in realtime, microkernel OS technology. The reason for the garbage is probably because it is using a local variable. You could try changing it to a global variable and using "SHARED" inside the windowtitle function. -- |) /\ \/ ][ |) |\/| c |\/| ][ |\| |\| | dave@satanicdreams.com http://members.xoom.com/David_McMinn | ICQ=16827694 In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king...but I bet all the blind call him a freak behind his back @ENDNODE @NODE "Mail_170" " windowtitle statfuncs " From: amorel Date: 09-08-00 04:17:38 Subject: @{b}windowtitle statfuncs@{ub} Goodday I`ve just tried the windowtitle funcion of statfuncs and it seems to be not too good. I use it to change the title of the screen after I opened a window. That works well but when I access the menu the title I gave is gone and also the windowtitle is gone. Actually the screen title went to "font" which makes me suspect it just grabbed whatever garbage was wherever ;-) Also when you click out of the window, thus making it inactive, the same thing happens, though that "font" word didn`t appear anymore, which seems according to what I suspected ;-) It`d be nice if changes would be permanent until changed again :-) Btw Curt Esser thanks for that fixed gtlib now I can use shape gadgets in a decent manner =) I`ll be trying that dll stuff soon. -- -*AMOREL*- musician/programmer \ \ Amiga 1200T/PPC/040/32/6g more shit http://www.xs4all.nl/~amorel \ \ Good old C=64 and an attitude! Do any other WinUAE users find that the Blitz > Debugger draws its windows/gadgets *really* slowly when you compile & run? > Everything's fine after that...it's weird... I found that always happened on the older version anyway. Sometimes went like a greased weasel on subsequent compile & runs though. Probably due to the fact that with the REDDebugger, the debugger is a separate program which gets run via a "stub" debugger for the first time, and then sits in memory until you quit it (there's usually a REDDebugger window on the WB). Maybe the stub debugger calls one of the OS routines which UAE runs very slowly, like maybe setting itself up as a trap/exception handler or maybe the call to create a new process is slow. -- |) /\ \/ ][ |) |\/| c |\/| ][ |\| |\| | dave@satanicdreams.com http://members.xoom.com/David_McMinn | ICQ=16827694 Murphey's law #23 - Don't plan any failsafes, as the problem will always find a way round them. @ENDNODE
