Hi!

Are there anybody on this list, who knows about converting MSWord dictionary
into readable format to import for FW or WW?

Hello again.
I am wondering if there is a way to get a 'real' long dash to print in FW (or
ANY Amiga app for that matter), instead of the short hyphen. There obviously
is no printed keystroke (on US keyboards), and I checked a few fonts, but no
luck. I know this is insignificant, but it's just one of those little things
that has bugged me since I gave up the typewriter...;^)

(I am not talking about the prob FW used to have not printing hyphens in PS)

Charles, I use FW97, on PS Printer,
using shift and dash(next to +sign) makes a very nice line when printed. I use
it on contracts all the time very successfully. Hope this helps,

The primary purpose of the DATA statement is to give names to constants;
instead of referring to pi as 3.141592653589793 at every appearance, the
variable PI can be given that value with a DATA statement and used
instead of the longer form of the constant. This also simplifies
modifying the program, should the value of pi change.

How long should be that dash? The longest I get with Alt+n.

Well, presumably you want the long dash in the center of the line, not what
you'd get with the underscore.

Have you considered FW's line-making feature? Just choose the thickness of
the line you want and then choose the line-making tool. You can then make
the "dash" as long as you want.

Leider ist mein Englisch mehr als schlecht, deshalb schreibe ich in Deutsch (ich hoffe das

Ich hab ein kleines Problem mit Final Writer 97.
Meine Rechtschreibkorektur stürtzt in letzter Zeit ständig ab.

Zeichen gibt. Vielleicht verursacht dies Abstürze.

Well, I don't think its THAT big of a deal, was english required on this list?
What if you don't know English? Personally I'd like to learn German for more
than lieder and arias. Any ideas on the best way? Any Amiga software
packages?

Greetings All...

I've been receiving mail from this great mailing list for some time now
and have learnt a lot about FW.

All of a sudden most of the mails are in German. Why? I received the odd
mail in a foreign (to me!) language usually followed with a sharp reminder
from the moderator, "English please!".

This means the mail re: Dictionary (and other subjects) has been totally
useless to me, and, I suspect, the vast majority of plodders stuck out
here in the (currently) Amiga doldrums.

I hope the moderator will address the above in the near future, as I'm
suffering withdrawal symptoms with no English mail to read.

Thank you and Cop 'U Later... Tiny

FAQ FW Mailing list:

2. What language is spoken here?

Actually, the major language of the list is English.
But there are a lot of German users (the list was founded in Germany) who
don't speak English very well. So we compromised:

German speaking users that can not explain their problem in detail in English
can write in German. But they should summarize the main topic in English.
Surely there are some other users that can help to post the translation to
the list.

All you English speaking users should understand this situation and you
should not blame them.
To maintain two different FW-lists at the same time is probably not very
useful.

The FAQ (on the aminet) states that if someone posts in German then someone
should translate, or at least give a brief comment about the problem, for
all of us to lazy to speak another`s language. This would solve the
problem...

Ah but which one? But my other language is italian (of sorts :-) I was
fortunate when travelling in Europe that so many people spoke good english.
Perhaps one day an international language will be chosen and we can all learn
just one other to our mother tongues. I vote for italian - the grammer rules
and pronunciation are pretty regular - wysiwyg ... unlike english and
french... imho :-)

Which reminds me,
!. Is there a FW dictionary of the italian language? It would
     help my spell checking no-end.

#Traduzione: Vorrei un dizionario in italiano per L'ultimo Scrittore (FW)# :-)

2. Is there a way of obtaining FW97 legally? For the Amiga. Does anyone
sell the software anymore that is. Or give it away free if
necessary... :-)

3. Is there a way to speed up it's printing? -I have FW release 1. I also
have a cover disk of FW Lite4 but haven't installed it yet.

cheers,
Julia

If you have a Canon Printer, Wolf Faust's Studio is Great, (Drivers Available
on Aminet, they really work)!

Otherwise, I'd suggest the compleat Print Studio, or Turbo Print.

Adios!

Hello all,

I'm new to the list here. I read one month's archive, so I'm not sure if
this has been answered.
Does anyone know if FinalWriter can export PDF files?
I found Convert_to_PDF but I'm not sure how to install Ghostscript. There are
too many files & the Convert_to_PDF readme says I need Ghostscript files which
are not found on Aminet.

Also, for translations has anyone tried Altavista: Translations? URL is:

Not as far as I know. On the rest of your questions, I plead ignorance.
But, I guess if there is a program that converts from ASCII to PDF.

Hi Bill Chin,

FinalWriter can not export PDF files. The New Pagestream 4.0
will save documents as PDF Files, see http://www.softlogik.com

There is also a new and excellent program in AMINET to read
PDF Files: apdf040.lha and apdf060.lha adapted from Xpdf 0.80
see: http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

Do not try any other program to view PDFs files, since they
are all very slow and frequently freeze the Amiga.

I had tried Altavista: Translations:
http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/translate
However is very slow and do not recognizes some URL.
Since this is a Systransoft service, I always had
translated all my text files and URLs directly at:
http://www.systransoft.com/
this way is faster and works better.

Other translation service is:
http://rivendel.com/~ric/resources/inter.html

Regards,

Ulises A. Rodriguez, Ph.D.

Hello H.J.C.!

> You did it all with FinalWriter, I presume. Did you use graphics also?

Yes, I imported two graphics. One made with 'Cycas' and then per screenshot
converted to iff-format and one manipulated with PPaint converted with GFXCon.
First I thought it is not possible to copy a graphic in FinalWriter but it is.
So I didn´t had to import the same graphic eight times for use on one DIN
A4-Page.

Wrong, Ghostscript is found on Aminet under /gfx/show

You will need more than one file so be sure you download the correct ones.
they should be named GS_XXXX or something close to that. I think most
recent version is 5.10.

Look out for Data, Font, Main and a CPU specific version.
If you are into printing you probarly want to buy the new Turboprint v7
which includes Ghostscript w/installer script. I have, but something is
wrong with the text rendering, possible a font issue as gfx works really
great. Anyone know anything about that?

Be aware that the files are a couple of megs so it might not be cheapest
to download them on a 28800 modem ;-)

There is also a good archive on aminet Ghostscript_install or so, which
contains simple example how to use Ghostscript easily (for printing for
instance).

Hi Thomas,

I see the why I could not find the GS files I needed because I used the
Aminet search tool. So far, I have the following files:

  1) GS510_040fpu.lha,
  2) GS510-data.lha, and
  3) GS510-stdfonts.lha

If I have an A4000 040/25Mhz, which main file should I have?
I cannot use the main-src, I don't have access to my compiler. Also, it's
another whole project to compile it. Is there a main binary?

I won't be using this for printing, only to create a PDF file for
the web, which is later printed on a laser printer from a public PC.

    Downloading at 28800?, I still have 14400, I'll need 56K soon,
but since I've been using shell account for several years, I can put up
with 14.4 for a while longer.
I'm also in the US, so phone time is a flat rate. :-)

Thanks again,

   Bill

I'm quite new in this list, because only lately I bought FW from a
friend,
who left Amiga for PeeCee :-(

In an older collection of FW mails I found mentioned a patch (FW9730r1)
by Martin Berndt <m_berndt@wanderer.gun.de>, which I downloaded. I
tried his eMail address to register, but did not receive an answer.

If anybody knows his new address, please inform me!

If possibly he reads this letter personally: Please answer me!

That is right.
But with the help of ghostscript and ARexx, FW can do it.

Pagestream are a good, but also pricey solution.
With (existing) FW and (freeware) ghostscript it was explicitly
lowpriced.

apdf can NOT handle encrypted xpdf-files!
ghostscript is the better solution, it can (with a little addition file)
process these pdf-files!

BTW, the installation of ghostscript is not very dificulty.
I have wrote in the german Online-Mag AmigaAktuell Issue 10/98
a workshop to install ghostscript.
If anyone want it, I can send the article (but only in german, sorry).

There was a discussion recently of adding this or other patches. I'm not
sure if this is the one I had tried but I found it caused some other
problems with my FW97 installation. I'd be sure to back up if I were you
and if things start having problems you're still safe.

This program appeared on AmigaFormat few months ago. So I installed it without pain to download all those files.

If you have a 68040 with FPU then this is all you need.
If not then you would need to get the non FPU version,if you can't find it
email me and I'll find it for you. I can give you a readout of my
installation if you need that, but basically what you need is a directory
called Ghostscript and then assign Ghostscript: to that directory and in
it you put a directory called Fonts where you stuff your font package. And
in another directory called Data you stuff the Data archive. The rest goes
in ghostscript:

If you are not certain you could use snoopdos to see where it searches.

The CPU specific binary is pretty small, less than one meg.

The installation is a bit tricky... follow me.

1 - Copy FinalDT program inside a directory you want (remeber the path
because you will need it later)

    2 - Copy FinalDT.rexx inside FinalWriter/FWMacros directory.

3 - Load a text editor (CED, ed and so on...) and load FinalDT.rexx
        file in it.

4 - Edit FinalDT.rexx file, changing JUST the path in which you have
placed FinalDT program, and save the file again.

    - - At this point the installation is almost finished.
All you still have to do is to add FinalDT.rexx macro to a
        FinalWriter button or Menu item.

To do this, just have a look to your FinalWriter manual.

It might be a good idea to search the lists and see if a Superbase ML isn't
already made too :) If I recall there are several Amiga specific lists on
onelist alone... in the 40s, and I have no idea how many Amiga oriented
groups are on egroups :)

Marion, the datatype support was introduced with FW v.5. It works OK with IFF
pictures. Any jpg or gif does not work. I have all the datatype necessary, no
problem in DOpus, but FW will freeze up. Using Final DT no problem. I am also
not too keen on IFF ILBM pictures because they are big files. The only up date
with FW97 was introduction of Articles.

Now that I look at the subject line it says FW97... :)

Okay. I was thinking datatypes support was added in FW97, because after FW
for Win95 was released with all those image formats supported a lot of
people wanted the same added to FW for Amiga which came about with datatype
support for images :) Are you sure about the datatypes support coming about
in v5?

I've imported several different image formats into FW documents without the
Final DT thing. Whatever works for you on your system is best. IFF pictures
are big I agree :)

It's good to see actual FW discussion going on now.

Count me in, too. I used to use SBase Pro a lot, but that programming
language was just too daunting for me. If I could get a little help with
it, I just may try to use it again.

Yes, did it exactly like this and the upcoming requester for picture-loading
says to me it is installed properly. Also the path in the Arexx-script is
okay, I tried different versions. But I don´t understand why no picture
appears on the sheet.

I have installed the akjfif- and akgif-datatypes and when the pictures are
loading, the busystring of ak appears....the cursor in FW just jerks...
and nothing else happens. But there must be something changed because when
I want to leave FW it asks if I want to save the changed file....

You are correct Andreas. Checking back,I found this was possible as of
 V. 3.0. It was supossed to work with all datatypes. I still can not load Jpg or
Gif from the Object import in FW. That's why I use Final DT with no problem. If
I want a better rendering I convert to IFF ILBM.

Oh okay. You will need FinalDT then with your version of FW if you want to
import anything besides IFF and EPS(?) files :)

Thank you for the advice! I'll be carefull in the future as well,
because right now I have copies of FW and of the FWLibs drawer right
there. Since I encountered a HD crash in my early Amiga days I have a
double complete backup of everything lying around on ZIP disks :-)

I have looked for Superbase ML, but I have nothing found. We can start a ML
at Onelist e.g. The question is who will start the ML? If no other one will
do this I would start the ML.

I believe I had installed that one and recently deleted the patched versions
and restored the backed up ones.

I found that I had actually mailed some cover letters with resumes that had
some odd formatting and broken words at the end of the
letter....embarrassing! It seemed to happen because after I had typed a
letter I had done some editing in the middle of the letter. The last word
ended up broken but without a hyphen so I didn't catch it on my read of the
hard copy.

I believe the patch was at fault. On my 060 FW isn't slow so I don't know
how much speed I could expect to get from a patch. It did seem to result
in some formatting problems though.

Complete backups are always a good idea....I got in the habit when I was
first having trouble with termination on an old GVP expansion for my 500.
Now I use Amiback every month or so to backup to my Jaz....takes a while
though...getting up to 1.5 Gigs now....lots of digicrud.

Andrew, within the frame work of this list and for brevity, a graphic animation
in Final Calc allows to show a graph and change how it looks and data in
display, over a set of steps (frames) in time. It is best attempted with the
owners manual in reach. It is well described there.

There are about 5-6 interests. I would create a ML at onelist. Is this
right? Other suggestions?

Hi,

Yes, I know it is not FinalWriter, but it is by the same people, and I hope
that someone here can help me.

I decided to try the demo sheets and graphs to see more about how FC works.

The graph with the animation doesn't work. I just get a graph. I am
going to dig out the docs to try and understand what an "animation" is when
used on a graph, but just thought I would ask here too.

Hope it is not too much of an ask. Thanks.

Greetings All...

Following the threads about the patches from Martin Berndt, I too have had
no reply from Martin, despite 2 emails to him outlining the problem with
installing same. I sent full info including an exact copy of where the
install script stopped, the versions of all the FW bits and pieces (Main
prog, libs etc.). He didn't bother replying. I can only presume he wants
the shareware fee up front before he replies with help, with no guarantee
that he will reply after he's got your money. No thanks!

If I'm wrong, my humble apologies to Martin. Maybe he'll read this and
be prompted to reply... somehow, I don't think so.

I have FW97, and have the akjfif and akgif datatypes installed. Finalwriter
works fine with JPEG and GIF files with these datatypes installed.

I think the above are pretty old...maybe his contact information has
changed...

He did write a set of faster math libs that worked for me until I registered
HSMathLibs.
I don't presume that the FW patch doesn't work, just that it caused some odd
behavior on my machine.

Good question, one I don't have the answer to off the top of my head.

Maybe this would be a good one to start off the new ml?

It is a service for free and you have to accept the advertising. Same at
onelist. But the advertisings are very short.

I too have SB4 Pro.

I want to make a "database" (to call it) that will read in a text file, find
information and show me statistics.

I know it will probably mean using the DML, but I have NO knowledge of it
and would like some help to tell me if I am wasting my time or not. :)

Ok, here we are. I have created the SBase mailinglist at onelist.
Go to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/SBASE to subscribe to the list or
send me a message to private.
I hope there are some subscribers. :-)

With all due respect Superbase is ancient. It does not even support SQL.
My suggestion is to use for instance mSQL or PostgreSQL ports that exist
for the Amiga and build your applications for instance with PHP. PHP is
more oriented for Web applications, but maybe that's even a better option
for you as there is a great demand for Web developers in the market and you
can still do it on the Amiga.

BH Good question, one I don't have the answer to off the top of my head.

BH Maybe this would be a good one to start off the new ml?

I think you would start with import. But I do think it would be a good
thing to move this to the new ML.
