(I haven't even seen the code..) It is totally written by Neil Williams, with the sole exception of the Int routine and the insertion sort, which were both inspired by EchoStat.Spot. MM_MegaStat was written with the help Robert Hofmann's MM_RexxDevelopperKit, which made writting this much easier! Bugs ~~~~ I am still working on this program, and there are plenty of things I have in mind at the moment, but I would like users to give me feed back on this, please! ToDo ~~~~ Lots more stats planned! Speed enhancements. The ability to store a database of the messages as they are imported, and generate the stats from that. (i.e., so there is no need to keep a months worth of messages or more on your hard disk) History ~~~~~~~ 0.14 - Public Release (28/10/98) ------------------------------------- Now reports: Number of messages with no tear line. Total percentage of quoted text over all messages parsed. New Misc Stats box. Add "#MISCSTATS Yes" to the config file, and there is a matching command line option NoMiscStats which can be used to temporarily disable it. The new statistics which are reported in it are: Largest PATH: Largest SEEN-BY: Various 'number of lines' stats. Fixed a bug with the Quoter stats. Looks up node address in message poster stats, so that we can highlight anyone who isn't listed. New config item: #POSTERPOINTS. Works with the new node address look-up in the poster stats. If set to yes, we don't look up the boss node but instead try to look for the address verbatim - even if it's a point. Item number (leftmost columns) now work okay with > 2 character numbers (like I said previously, LandNet is one hell of a place). New command line option - TOTAL (keyword option, i.e. you must use TOTAL=50 on in the arguments). This overrides the #TOTAL option in the configuration file. 0.13 - Public Release (6/6/98) ------------------------------------- The program didn't handle 4 figure values correctly, fixed. (Thousands of message a week? Freq LANDNET from 2:442/108! It's worth your time!) Document bug: I called an insertion sort a bubble sort! The tear stats can now be set to reflect the actual software in use. The new configuration option to use is #USETEARSW (Yes/No), and must be use in conjunction with #TEARSTATS. Another unique MM_MegaStat feature? :-) 0.12 - Public release (3/9/97) ------------------------------------- MAJOR new feature added : multiple areas support. Create statistics for a range of areas. (For details, check the documentation on the command line option AREA - it has changed function slightly). 0.11 - Public release (1/9/97) ------------------------------------- Minor cosmetic changes, and some minor speed enhancements. Documentation has been cleaned up a little too. New command line option : EXPORT 0.10 - Public release (29/7/97) ------------------------------------- The new kludges statistics in the header have been refined, and you can now disable them in the configuration file or by the command line. (#SMALLHEADER in config, SMALLHEADER for CLI). They took me a whole day to do, ya'know! :) The keywork in the configuration is #TIMESTATS 0.6 - First public release (1/3/97) ------------------------------------- Tear line stats added, and each line in the statistics is numbered. 0.1ß -> 0.5 - Development (27/2/97) ------------------------------------- I have no idea what I did and when I did it. But everything except that above was done in this time frame - 2 or 3 weeks worth perhaps. --------------------------------------------------------------- Installation ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Depack the archive to "MM:" (i.e. the directory of MM), or you could dearchive it to a temporary directory and copy the files across manually.. That's it! It just needs configuring now. Configuration ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is done by the usual text file in MM:Config, named MM_MegaStat.CFG 1 - #TOTAL e.g. #TOTAL 20 The maximum number of items in each statistic. More takes longer to process. The example above used a #TOTAL value of 20, and this is usually a good number to stick to. This item has no default, so it MUST be present. 2 - #BLACKLIST e.g. #BLACKLIST 57 This is the percentage that a user needs to quote in order to become `blacklisted.' A value of between 50 and 60% is usually okay. 3 - #DECINT e.g #DECINT DECIMAL Set to DECIMAL for "23.4%" (= floating point) style percentages or INTEGER for "23%" 4 - #FROM e.g. #FROM Neil Williams (optional) The name that posted messages are from (No quotes.) Defaults to the name you have set as the default sysop in MM_Prefs. 5 - #TO e.g. #TO All (optional) The name that posted messages are to, normally "All" and this is also the default. Again no quotes are needed for more than one word. 6 - #SUBJECT e.g. #SUBJECT Echo Stats (optional) The subject used in posted message. %AREA will be replaced by the name of the area you are producing statistics for, and %DATE will be replaced by the date (in the form "24 Feb 1997") Defaults to "Area Statistics : %DATE for %AREA" 7 - #SMALLHEADER (YES or NO) If you have #USEHEADER (below) enabled, this will display some statistics on the kludge lines in use. 8 - #USEHEADER (YES or NO) Add a header to the statistics. Usage ~~~~~ [RX] MM_MegaStat[.rexx] AREA/A START POSTMSG/S SINCELAST/S EXPORT/S SMALLHEADER/S NOUSEHEADER/S NOPOSTERSTATS/S NORECEIVERSTATS/S NOSUBJECTSTATS/S NOQUOTERSTATS/S NONODESTATS/S NOTEARSTATS/S NOTIMESTATS/S NOMISCSTATS/S AREA is required (hence the /A). It's the TAG name of the echo area you want to produce statistics for, or if you instead specify a valid file name here MM_MegaStat will open this file and read each line, create statistics for each area mentioned. The format of the file is simple, simply place the tag name of each area on a new line - no blank spaces, and no comments. Note: POSTMSG will not work when there is more than one area involved. START is not required, but recommended. It specifies the number of messages to look at to create the statistics. If you specify 20 for example, MM_MegaStat will look at the 20 *newest* messages (i.e. the last 20 in the area.) If you specify "ALL", or don't include a value, then all the messages in the area will be taken for the statistics. POSTMSG is a switch (hence the /S). If POSTMSG is present the statistics will be posted into the area. If it's not present, the stats will simply be left in the file "T:MM_MegaStat.tmp" SINCELAST is a switch. This is a very powerful feature! It scans the area for a message which looks like it is statistics posting from this program, and uses this as a starting point. The message it looks for is: 1. From the name you have configured in MM_MegaStat.CFG 2. The first 8 characters of the subject match that configured (if you are using SinceLast is is therefore recommened that you put a date (%DATE in the config) AFTER the 8 characters limit) 3. Is addressed to the same as the config (Usually 'All') For best performance of this feature, you may want to post stats with a unique name - like "Echo Stats Robot" or something. EXPORT is a switch. If it is included, and POSTMSG is used, then the area the message has been posted in is exported. SMALLHEADER is the same as the configuration option #SMALLHEADER. It's function is to supress the information on kludges in the header. NOUSEHEADER and other NO#? options can be used to disable the output of the statistics that they match in the configuration file. Example Usage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MM_MegaStat Workbench 200 PostMsg Take statistics from the WORKBENCH area, using the last 200 messages, and post the statistics straight into the echo. MM_MegaStat CLUB_AMIGA PostMsg Take statistics from the CLUB_AMIGA area, using all the messages in the area, and post the statistics straight into the echo. MM_MegaStat W_ANYTHING 2000 Take statistics from the W_ANYTHING area, using the last 2000 messages. The statistics will be left in a file T:MM_MegaStat.tmp and not posted in the echo. Adding to the Custom Menus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This must be added to the Browse Menu, it cannot be used from the Areas Menu.
