When I try to write a message, nothing happens

Your 'editor command' is not set up correctly. Run the Preferences program and check the Editor command. See below for more information.

When I write a message, the editor pops up correctly but both Tag-o-Miga and the OLR ignore the message

Your editor is detaching itself from the CLI. Check your editor's documentation to see how to stop it doing this.

Tag-o-Miga isn't reading my tagfile properly - it says there is only one tagline in it

You are trying to use a one-liner tagfile, but haven't placed [OPT] ONELINE on the first line.

Troubleshooting the editor

(This section provides general information, but many of the examples - e.g. SnoopDOS - are Amiga-specific)

During beta-testing, it became apparent that the most common problem with installing Tag-o-Miga was setting up your text editor to work with it. While I have tried to make this as smooth as possible, by supplying defaults for the Installer and by providing instructions for specific OLRs, many problems still occur.

The symptoms of an incorrect editor setting will be either trying to write a message, and getting no effect, or the editor popping up but your OLR completely ignoring the message.

The first thing to check is the file name of the editor. Run Tag-o-Miga-Prefs and look at the 'Editor command', to see if you can see anything wrong with it.

Open up a Shell, then try typing the Editor command into the CLI and running it (replace the @F with a proper filename e.g. t:qwe). If there is a problem with this you should hopefully see an error message which will help you to pinpoint the exact problem.

If the editor does appear then the filename and path are obviously correct. In order for Tag-o-Miga to work properly, the editor must not return until you have saved and quitted it. To check this, type in the Editor command as above and, while the editor is still on the screen, check the CLI window. If it has returned (i.e. the CLI is waiting for you to enter another command) then your editor is not configured properly. The usual solution to this is to put '-sticky' on the end of the Editor command - if this fails to work check your editor's documentation.

If you are still having problems, run SnoopDOS. Checking its logs should help you to identify exactly what is failing - your OLR, Tag-o-Miga or your editor.
