Its a shame you can not disable the colours with out taking the cartridges out of the printer. As it looks horrible printed in Red. If I try and open the Amiga Guide out in a W/P like Final Writer its got all the extra rubbish is there no Arexx script or something to get rid of it. There's a good utility on Aminet that strips HTML coding and lets you save the resulting file. That way you can use Final Writer, a simple text editor, or even just copy the file to the printer. As long as he uses a file format your printer should understand, you may print his document. Do this by shipping his file (the printout) to your computer. Put his file in RAM: or in one of your hard drive partitions. Then open Shell (CLI) and write the following: Copy RAM:filename to PRT: If the file works, your printer should be able to print it out almost immediately. Replace RAM: (in the above command line) with the real search path, and substitute "filename" with the original filename. Don't forget to write the PC extension as well (e.g. file.doc, if the file is a Word document). Finally, a few notes. I have the LaserJet 6MP, with built in PostScript. Do you have the PostScript add-on inside your printer? Then, your pal should write to a PostScript-file. Otherwise, a standard LaserJet 6L should be able to print Word documents. Worth buying? > > Thanks, > > Matt Oh... Wait a second. I didn't notice before... :/ As far as I know, you must have a PostScript printer when printing EPSF's. Sorry, but that's it. Common printers do not handle EPSF or PS - only advanced laser printers do. As far as I know, Turboprint can't help you with this either. The only efficient solution is to buy a PostScript printer. Other solutions includes exporting the EPSF's to TIFF format, just like you do. Also, if you have access to a PC (with printer) at work or at school, there is a Arexx script converting FW documents into PDF format. Put your PDF formatted document onto disk or as a downloadable file on the Internet. Then use the PC to retrieve the file, opening it with Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader does not demand a PostScript printer (a usual inkjet would do just fine), but Acrobat isn't available for Amiga. Though, there are a few hacks (more or less), providing Acrobat compability, but they all works in the same way: the PDF is converted back into PostScript, and then you will again need a PostScript printer. As for your other question. PageStream is a remarkable piece of software. Much cheaper than e.g. PageMaker and QuarkXpress, but almost that efficient. I work with it almost every day. Unfortunately, you do need a PostScript printer to get the most out of it, but that goes for all DTP programs. One feature I've learned to really appreciate in PageStream is the "Print to IFF" option. Have a look at http://www.oktober.com/. The site interface originally started out as vectors in PageStream, printed as an IFF picture. I then converted the IFF into JPG - voila! Of course, the site also required som nasty HTML coding to not load like Quake on a 68020 Amiga, but PageStream really helped me out. Sorry if my former answer put some spirit in you, but I really did believe you had a PostScript printer. I hope you'll get it to work in some way... We're talking about printing out EPSF pics directly, right? Because printing EPSF images imported into FW97 is as normal as printing out any other images. I'm using FW97, TP6 and an Epson Stylus Color 800 and I can print EPSF clip art just fine. I probably missed something in this thread. If I did, sorry. I can't believe this bug works the same way on any platform (at least I treid to print one small drawing with just 3 colours as colour separation on MAC (Corel Draw), PC (CorelDraw) and Amiga (Page Stream) and = no success! Colours were "corrupted" so I had to make colour separation by hand.) I'd like to post you all this small example with short explanation to this mailing list. Attached file will be just 30 KB in lha so all you can see it and try it. This is the strangest thing I've ever experienced during my DTP work, and nobody here can explain nothing... If you can figure out how to print in colour separation (and found what causes the problem), I'd like to tell al of us why it is not printing ok. I own a (non PostScript) HP 4L, the old el cheapo personal version of the HP4 series. I do most of my printing, and ALL Final Writer printing, with PostScript anyway, it is much faster and the output looks better. The secret is to export the output as PostScript to a file, preferably in RAM:, then to use the "postlj" utility to send it to the printer. Postlj is a part of the original "Post V1.7" distribution, by Adrian Aylward. It is available on Aminet as; text/print/POST17B.lzh It is a small (13KBytes) program which is optimized for the HP LaserJet series, it will print any PostScript file, to almost any sized paper, with any margins, and either horizontal or vertical aspect. I have configured Final Writer so that the "Printer Button" on the toolbar executes the following Arexx macro, named FW:FWMacros/Postscript_Print /* -------------------------------------------- */ /* Final Writer Arexx Macro - Postscript_Print */ /* This macro will cause printing using Postlj */ /* $VER: Postscript_Print 1.0 (14.1.95) */ /* -------------------------------------------- */ Options Results PrintSetup "PrintTo PSFile" PostScriptFile "RAM:Print.Ps" Print ADDRESS COMMAND "runwsh Postscript:Postlj -s0 -j2 Post:init.ps RAM:Print.Ps" Note that my default shell is the Wshell by Bill Hawes (the man who also wrote Arexx), but you can modify the last line to cause the standard shell to run postlj in the background. This has the advantage that FW can write the PostScript file very fast, and the actual printing is done in the background, so you can continue to use FW. Also postlj, running on my A2000 with a Fusion40 Mc68040 accelerator is many times faster than the PostScript interpreter built into any affordable printer. -- Herbert Wollman home - hwollman@mediaone.net work - hwollman@mitre.org ---- to unsubscribe from fwml, send mail to "fwml_admin@thepentagon.com" with "unsubscribe finalwriter" in the message-body. NOOO, I`ve used in my document many ( > 40 ) EPS-Files and had no problem to print them with TP6. The reason is that FW97 is able to interprete EPS-Files ( sometimes a little bit buggy ), but only when the correct init.ps files and libraries are installed. It is possible that sometimes problems occurs. Mostly you have to correct the header of the EPS-Files ( %%BoundingBox is missing ). But it works also with big EPS-Files ( >300 kb Schematic of a integratet circuit ) !!! Or, try to install the EPS-Datatypes, then you can EPS import in all graphic programms. If you make an image or text from inside FinalWriter (FW), you can invert it from the menu. The two side by side images (or text) on the bottom half of a 8 1/2 by 11" sheet would be normal (not inverted), and the top images or text would be inverted. The top left (inverted) quarter would be the card cover, the bottom right (normal) quarter would be the card inside right page. If you wanted an image on the cover that was not generated from FW then you would have to switch the top and bottom halves of the sheet (the bottom right would be the cover). That would allow you to have the cover have an image that would not have to be inverted. The fold lines would be at 4.25" for width and 5.5" for length (obviously) the image and text placement would depend on how much white space border you want around the card. If I want to be very precise, I'll draw out a template onto a sheet with a ruler and calculate or measure my borders, image widths, text box widths, etc. I can attach a demo file of some cards I have made if that would help. Let me know and I'll send it to your address below (not the list). BTW, I use FW '97. Hope this was somewhat helpful. Bob Meyers, Nuclear Asst. The best current program for doing cards is PageStream. Personally I use version 2.2 which can be had at a greatly reduced price. If you need absolute precision version 3 would probably do better. The only card specific program that I have ever seen for the Amiga was Pelican Press, and it was released shortly after the 2000 was put on the market, so it is OLD. It does have its limits, but does quite a bit. I'm fairly certain that it is an IBM port of some kind. I have never seen an upgrade notice for it, nor seen it marketed in many years. Because of that I don't think I would be stepping on any toes if I made it available to anyone who might want it. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know as I don't want to deprive someone of their living. The program automatically handles making cards, posters, banners and such. It comes with its own clip art, much of which can only be used by the program itself. Some of its functions are NOT obvious, and there are no on disk documents for it, so you would have to figure it out. Such things as clip art is loaded as the pointer, and you hit the space bar to cycle to the one you want, then stamp it down. Everything crunches down to about 790K as an LHA file. Draft output is via printer fonts which usually have a definite spacing, i.e., 10 or 12 characters per inch. With your set-up you only have 73 characters per line (78-5). The screen output is non-proportional (not sure if I'm getting my terminology right) in that the characters have no definite space requirements, each character is only given the space needed (an i needs less space than an m). When the printer receives the info from the program, if there are more characters on a line than will fit, it will wrap the extra characters onto the next line, really screwing up your formatting. To get it to work properly, you have to count the characters you type for each line to make sure they'll fit properly when you do a draft printing. If so I would like to hear about them Hi Warren, There are two programs I'm aware of, "Pelican Press" and a old one called "Deluxe Print". I have both and like them even though they are a little dated now. I tend to use Pelican Press the most!. I've also used FW for this by carefully laying out and flipping images and printing on both sides. In the meantime I did that what I saying to other folks:" READ the INSTRUCTIONS." So, Sheridan was absolutely right. Text Blocks can be treated like graphics created within FW. Drawback is, the text length is limited and any additional lines will have to be created individually. Text Clips on the other hand are created, like an address, stored in Text Clip File and called up if needed by button or fron the file directly. I really appreciate this FW list, since it exchanges information and gives usable tips, especially to those not daily using the FW. This requires two pages in FinalWriter; one for the back & front, the other for the left & right insides. This creates two 4.25" x 5.5" cards (requires a straight cut) with a single fold. This doesn't require rotating; you do have to duplicate everything. It's more work but I think the final product it nicer. Card stock is a THICK paper and is available at Office Depot. This format is great for invitations or note cards. For single cards (i.e. birthday cards), we simply use 5.5" x 8.5" format. ---- to unsubscribe from fwml, send mail to "fwml_admin@thepentagon.com" with "unsubscribe finalwriter" in the message-body. Seems that when I tried it I got similar results. I think that it sends simple ASCII text to the printer, no fonts or formatting. I think that is intended to print a copy to check the text not the formatting.
