Ja, endlich ist es ganz offiziell. Das AmigaOS Update wird kommen und zwar irgendwann Anfang 1999. Noch schweigen die Herren wie immer was die Einzelheiten betrifft, aber zumindest wurde diesmal eine AmigaOS3.5 Homepage angerichtet. Sowas hätte man sich auch zu dem Next-Generation Amiga gewünscht, aber egal. Zur Zeit ist das AmigaOS3.5 zu 9% fertig. Das signalisiert zumindest ein Balken auf der OS3.5 Homepage. Dort finden wir außerdem zusätzliche Informationen über die nötige Konfiguration und über Erweiterungen die das Betriebsystem mit sich bringen soll.

Fangen wir aber doch erstmal mit den ganz offiziellen Sachen an und kommen später zu den Gerüchten und anderen Informationen.

An erster Stelle steht natürlich die Unterstützung von Grafik- und Soundkarten. Unterstützt werden angeblich alle Modelle auch so neue Karten wie die ATEO A1200. Für die Soundkarten Unterstützung wird ein neues System entwickelt welches natürlich zu AHI Kompatibel bleibt. Das Wort Internet wird für den Amiga natürlich auch kein Fremdwort mehr sein. Das Update soll einen Internet Stack sowie E-Mail, FTP und wahrscheinlich einen Browser beinhalten. Das Filesystem wird auch kräftig überarbeitet und endlich keine Probleme mit 4Gbyte Festplatten haben. Natürlich soll auch ein CD-Filesystem dabei sein, ob besser wie das letzte weiß man noch nicht. Das kann man aber annehmen. Das Herzstück des Betriebsystems, nämlich AREXX wird deutlich verbessert, genauso wie die beliebte DOS Kommandozentrale Shell. Das Aussehen der Workbench soll endlich frischen Wind bekommen. Wie frisch ist noch nicht bekannt. PowerPC Prozessoren werden ebenfalls unterstützt.

Erscheinen soll das Update auf einer CD-Rom, was ja auch wegen dem Umfang nicht anders möglich wäre und außerdem haben wir Heute 1998 und da ist einfach ein CD-Rom Laufwerk Standard! Das System setzt einen Rechner mit mindestens einer 020er CPU und 4Mbyte Speicher. Optimal sind dagegen ein PowerPC, 32Mbyte, Grafik- und Soundkarte.

Das sind erstmal die offiziellen Infos. Was jetzt folgt stimmt zwar zu 99% wurde aber noch nicht offiziell bekannt gegeben.

Das AmigaOS3.5 auch PowerPC Prozessoren unterstützen wird wissen wir schon alle. Genommen wurde das System WarpOS von Haage&Partner. Wie Fleecy Moos in einem Interview verraten hat, war man bei phase5 darüber nicht gerade erfreut. Man versprach nichts zu unternehmen was möglicherweise WarpOS unbrauchbar machen würde. WarpOS war schon von Anfang an eine sehr Amiga ähnliche Erweiterungen im Gegensatz zu ppc.library. Desweiteren entwickelte Haage&Partner in der Zwischenzeit dafür einen entsprechenden Emulator welches es ermöglich das AmigaOS z.B. auf einem PowerPC zu starten. Hierbei wird kein zusätzlicher 68k Prozessor benötigt. WarpOS läßt sich außerdem so ähnlichewie z.B. das AHI Soundsystem durch entsprechende Treiber an jede neue PowerPC Karte anpassen. So wird angeblich schon bald eine G3 Karte erscheinen ohne einen 68k Prozessor. Das System soll dann mittels einer 68k Emulation mit der Geschwindigkeit eines 040er laufen. Das sind aber noch alles Gerüchte, ob das mit der Karte stimmt weiß keiner so genau.

Was die Grafikkarten Unterstützung angeht, so wird man für das AmigaOS das Picasso96 System nehmen. Diese Info bekamen wir von Fleecy Moos. Das System soll dann um weitere Funktionen erweitert werden und wird in das Betriebsystem integriert.

Die Soundkarten Unterstützung wird durch das neuentwickelte System A.R.T.A.S. (Amiga ReTargetable Audio System). realisiert. Hier folgen die Infos von der Homepage.

What is ARTAS?

Although the name might implicate that ARTAS is capable of handling audio only it is in fact an administration system for all kinds of streaming data such as MIDI, MPEG audio, music but video as well.

ARTAS offers an easy to use API to control multiple buffer data streams.Playing back a sample is as easy as filling a buffer with data, opening "artas.library" and telling the system about where the data is, what format is has and how fast it shall be played back. Recording is just as simple.

Where developers on non-AMIGA platforms have to do magic tricks in order to syncroniye several components to each other ARTAS comes with a built-in sync mechanism which can be triggered through drivers (hard- or software based), making simultaneous MIDI and Audio along with video playback an easy job.

Plug-Ins can be attached to all kinds of streams, ARTAS handles needed conversion internally without making the user or developer handling all kinds of data formats individually. Codecs are called whenever necessary to convert from one type to another, like converting MPEG Audio to standard Audio internally.

ARTAS allows the user to controll all drivers through simple Tags. Applications that are aware of ARTAS are no longer limited to starting and stopping data handling.

What is supported by ARTAS - Who is supporting ARTAS?

ARTAS is an integrated component of OS3.5 and will therefor be available to all Amiga users world wide through established distribution channels. It also means it does not cost anything (besides the price for the OS upgrade itself).

There are drivers for most Amiga soundcards available on the market as well as for well established ceased products. There will be drivers for hardware extensions like PPC cards and DSP boards.

Developers of well known Audio applications and related software have already stated that they will support ARTAS when it becomes available for development purposes.

AHI is neither obsolete nor is it a competiting product. ARTAS will allow using AHI drivers to access components that do not have native drivers already. Since AHI is limited in its controlling mechanisms ARTAS adds these features to AHI applications through asyncronous editors.

Of course ARTAS will be fully OS3.5 conformous, which also means it supports the use of additional CPUs like PPCright from the start. The amount of CPU usage trhough ARTAS solely depends on the application using it (and the addressed drivers), not on the system itself.
