1. A husband and wife have the combined ages of 91. The husband is now twice as old as his wife was when he was as old as she is now. How old are the husband and wife?
2. There is a number made up of four digits. The last digit is twice the first digit. the second digit is three less than the third. If you add the first digit to the last digit the answer you get will be twice the third digit. What is the number?
3. The River Kwai is 760 feet wide and is spanned by a famous bridge. One fifth of the bridge stands on one side of the river, and one sixth over the other side of the river. How long is the bridge over the River Kwai?
4. How much earth is there in a freshly dug hole that is 22 cm deep, 18 cm wide, and 41 cm long?
5. There is a number under 3000 that when divided by 2 leaves a remainder of 1, when divided by 3 leaves a remainder of 2, when divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 3, when divided by 5 leaves a remainder of 4, when divided by 6 leaves a remainder of 5, when divided by 7 leaves a remainder of 6, when divided by 8 leaves a remainder of 7, when divided by 9 leaves a remainder of 8, and when divided by 10 leaves a remainder of 9. What is the number?
6. Can you think of a word which contains the letters TCHPHR grouped together in the middle?
7. A man sold a dog for £35 and half as much as he gave for it, and gained therby £10.50. What did he pay for the dog?
8. A man was born in the year 50 BC. How old was he on his birthday in 50 AD?
9. I am four times as old as my son. In twenty years time I will be twice as old as my son. How old am I and how old is he?
10. If it takes 3 minutes to boil one egg, how long will it take to boil 2?
11. I have two coins whose sum is 55 pence. One of them is not a 50 pence piece. What two coins do I have?
12. I am a word of ten letters. My 1,2,8 is rainy. My 1,5,6,7 is part of a birds body. My 8,9,10 is a weight. My 1,2,3,4 is a spring. My 7,5,4,8 is a golden surface. My 10,9,8,2 is a short letter. My whole is a celebrated warrior. Who or what am I?
13. There are 5 eggs on a dish - divide them among 5 persons so that each will get 1 egg and yet 1 still remain on the dish.
14. One ninth of a log was found stuck in mud. Five sixths was above water, and 2 feet of it was in the water. How long is it?
15. Find a fifteen letter word containing all the vowels in which no letter is used more than once.
16. There is a word which indicates a good deal of anxiety which runs to fifteen letters and which can be printed without any letters sticking up (such as b, d) or sticking down (such as p, q). Can you think of it?
17. A father's age is 40 years. His son is 13. How many years ago was the father four times as old as the son?
18. A farmers wife took ninety nine pears to market in four baskets, carrying an odd number in each basket. How was this possible?
19. Divide 97 into two parts so that eight times the smaller part is six greater than six times the larger part.
20. If a church bell takes two seconds to strike the hour at 2 o'clock, how many seconds will it take to strike 3 o'clock?
