1. AMIGA on the Amiga 99 show
As reported in AMIGA aktuell international 3/99 these days the Amiga 99 fair is under way. At a recently held
IRC conference both the Amiga head manager Jim Collas and the manager for Amiga product development Jeff Schindler
participated.
Following are the most important details about the Next Generation Amiga as stated here:
- The first AmigaNG product will be the developers system.
- Amiga considers to offer optionally for the developers system an extension card containing powerful multimedia features,
that cannot be found on usual PC's.
- The second Amiga product will be a multimedia computer.
- Amiga plans to render feasible a computer prized at appr. 500 US$
with the power of a 3000 US$ PC.
- Amiga plans to present new hardware by themselves, but the AmigaNG
will have an open architecture thus enabling the use of the technologie
of numerous other products.
- On the long run a total production number of 20 - 30 million units is
aimed at.
- The new Amiga operating system will support multiple processors.
- It is considered to disclose further details about the architecture
on a developers conference in summer/fall. The months July/August (or
even earlier) were mentioned on other place.
- Amiga negotiates with several big software enterprises about assistance
for AmigaNG, until now none of them expressively has said "No".
- The AmigaNG is to be distributed over the existing net of vendors.
- Amiga will be managed as worldwide business emphasizing the countries,
where Amiga is widest spread, those are Germany, UK and USA.
- The first big appearance of Amiga is planned at the Comdex in fall.
- Already this year a significant amount of money will be placed on
marketing steps.
In an address Jim Collas disclosed further details:
- The new Amiga OS will have the Name "AmigaSoft". The first version,
AmigaSoft 4.0 alpha (for developers) will appear in September, the final
version is due to reach the market end of the year.
- It is projected to release a betaversion of AmigaSoft 5.0 at the end
of the year, the final version is to be ready in the second quarter of
year 2000.
- AmigaSoft is to have a "revolutionary" software architecture and
provide a complete developers environment
- Jim Collas promissed a better communication between Amiga and the
Amiga community.
- Amiga has the full assistance by the head trust Gateway.
