Hello, FW registered users! :)

I'm a spanish FW 5/97 registered user (Gordon Harwoode offer) what I
want talk about this program (and interchange tricks, hints,
oppinions and/or suggestions). I use this for letters (well, at this
 moment, I use the YAM/Thor 2.5a a lot :D), my laboral/scholar
works,... although I prefer DrawStudio Lite for labels printing :DDD

Other 'bugs' what I detected (FW97)...
1.- The datatype support don't work as Mr. Lemos know :D ... the
program load garbage and generally crash. Temporal solution:
I use HappyDT 2.5 (registered version) wrote by Mr. Sollet (a
       datatype patch).
2.- With the GaramontCursive font (CG), my printer (Epson Stylus
Color 600) sometimes the vowel 'i' with accent ('=ED') appears
wrong: I've seen the font with TypeSmith but all seems OK...
I've changed the printer driver (TurboPrint 5 Lite, Stylus 300
driver) but the trouble don't disappear. This seems a bug not
very reproducable... perphaps with high printing resolutions
and when the vowel is following for other(s) specific
       character(s), but I don't sure r8-????
3.- The picture aspect (import option) is wrong... I think what a
user wrote a Arexx script for fix this (this is in Aminet).
4.- And the know trouble with the tables (more short printed what
       at screen)...

See you later | Nos leemos... http://www.arrakis.es/~amidde/

Following my last 2 mails:
Owner of a PicassoII graphic card, I use a cybergfx screen with a resolution
of 1360x607, or 1024x600.
In such a resoultion, I have to set the horizontal dpi at 86 and the
vertical one at 52, and I use a display of 180%. Then, I have a full screen
real size pixels and readable, upto 8 pixels with no problems.
But, the problem is that the text you type changes following to the dpi
entered, but not the menu text, nor the text in the thesaurus or grammar
requester. And at that time, it is quite too small (and not in 1:1) for being
readable, so I have to look closer to my screen. Would that be possible for
the menus and
other requester to be "re-dpi" as well as the written text? I imagine also the
people running a 1280 x 1024 screen, the menu text and requesters would be as
well unreadable.
You should do something about that (as well as for my other suggestions).

Subject: FinalWriter..updates
Reply-To: finalwriter@coollist.com

Here is a list of things that should appear on further updates:

1° when you place an object inside a text, you only have the possibility to
notify the next on the left or on the right. You should seriously consider
implementing the ability to wrap the text on each border of the object.
2°you should implement a 'freehand' drawing tool (like the one in pagestream
or wordworth).
3°add text effects possibility (again, like in pagestream or wordworth). You
could even think of implementing the pretty good shareware "finalwrapper"
(this way, no extra development from you would be involved) to a new update of
finalwriter.
4°add the possibility to write text inside of an object, inside of a shape.
5°when you make a document with 2 columns (or more), you can't set up the
lenght of each column. Let's say you want the first column to be 2cm wide and
the second one the rest of the page.
6°A nice feature in wordworth is that if you click on an object, it
automaticaly switch to the object mode, and when you click in a text area, it
switch to the text mode. That is a nice feature with which you haven't to
select the desired mode in the menubar.
7°About the menu bars, there is no options of having both bar options at the
same time (not the configurable one, but the other two). So you have to switch
to select a font size and switch back to select the bold mode for example.
8°A multitasking printer mode (like in wordworth) wpouldn't be a lux too.

These are not critics, but improvements that could (and should) be implemented
in future releases of FinalWriter, and I hope they will seriously be taken
into consideration.

Sincerely,

Reply-To: finalwriter@coollist.com

Hiya all,

I'm new to this list and i want to give a little introduction
of myself.

I also think that FinalWriter is the best wordprocessor we
currently have on the Amiga, although many enhancements
can and should be made. Among other things, i mostly miss
an import/export option for the popular wordprocessors
on other platforms (e.g. Word, Wordperfect, etc). Therefore
i think it's a bloody shame that the development of FW is
dropped. Sadly it reflects the bad situation of our beloved
computer. If the 'signature' action suggested by Manual
Lemos is going to be done, i will glady add my signature and
collect some more signatures from other Amigausers.

Now i use SM Office and/or Wordperfect via fusion/shape-
shifter to convert documents to the RTF format which i
then import in FinalWriter. It's not a perfect solution but it's
much better than what previous versions of Finalwriter allowed.

Some things about myself: I am an Amiga user since July 1987,
and am a Commodore Collector (see my signature for the
machines i already collected). Besides this i'm a militairy
avation enthousiast and like to read fantasy/SF books.

I hope i can contribute to this list. Feel free to mail me
if you have any questions :)

Greetz,

Hans 'MazzelBoy' Wezenberg

You can take another bigger font and rename it. Then you should have no such
problems. I myself have renamed a 12 point thick font (named workbench) as
default into 11 points. Works fine.

Unbelievable, it works really fine.
You can also change the Ruler font (SWRuler/)...

BTW: At Aminet exists a font for the resolution of >1024x... And it looks
very "clean".
Check out Aminet:text/font/ At the moment i don't know the name of this
font.
(the .readme file tells about "1024")

Are there other special functions for the interface of FW?

Thanks. Thats a normal thing on amiga system, i think.

Here a nearer explanation for all, they didnt get an result:

Rename the drawer with fontfile init. Rename the fontfile (z.B. 12 -> 11)
then delete the #?.font file and assign the drawer, where is init to fonts:.
And then make a fixfonts. the #?.font should be rewritten.

I hope that helps to all.

Is the amiga development of finalwriter over??
This is a shame! It is always the same, they began on the amiga and then go
over to the PC. This was the case with scala, fw, imagine, lightwave,
tvpaint,....
When you think that wordworth is still here on the amiga with a new version
7.0. They, at least, still believe in the amiga. Now fw is of the track, they
pretend rival with word!. Well, good live to wordworth then.
(is there a wordworth mailing list?)
But, maybe finalwriter amiga isn't left away, I just don't know??

Is this so? I had not heard any news. I had been hoping that I would
soon receive a letter from Softwood announcing a new upgrade; this is
usually about the time of year that they have had upgrades.

If this is true, it would be very sad news. I consider FinalWriter to
be the best word processor on any platform. I have the ?pleasure? of
using M$ Word at work. It is hard to learn and it is slow, even on a
fast pentium. It also has the bad habit of crashing frequently when I
am using it. I don't know how businesses have been brainwashed into
using such a bad word processor. Of course there are a few little
features that I wish FinalWriter would have, but I still think it is
the best word processor. I hope that this report is incorrect. I
want Softwood to continue supporting/developing FinalWriter!

:This is a shame! It is always the same, they began on the amiga and then go
:over to the PC. This was the case with scala, fw, imagine, lightwave,
:tvpaint,....
:When you think that wordworth is still here on the amiga with a new version
:7.0. They, at least, still believe in the amiga. Now fw is of the track,
:they
:pretend rival with word!. Well, good live to wordworth then.

I had heard (2 or 3 years ago) that the windows version was produced
by another company, under a license from Softwood. Has Softwood now
started to develop this windows version themself? Well, I suppose we
couldn't hardly blame them; there probably haven't been very many
sales to the Amiga users any more.
